Biden: Nuclear Iran would threaten United States as well as Israel

U.S. Vice President due to arrive in Israel; Barak: Iran doesn't pose an existential threat to us.

By Haaretz Service and Reuters Tags: Iran Israel news Middle East peace

The Obama administration has boosted U.S. defense ties to Israel and will close ranks with its ally against any threat from a nuclear-armed Iran, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden said on Monday ahead of a trip to Israel.

Biden arrived on Monday afternoon in Israel, where he plans to deliver a message to the Israeli public about U.S.-Israel relations, the Iranian nuclear program and the Middle East peace process.

Biden, the most senior U.S. official to visit Israel since President Barack Obama took office in January 2009, is widely expected to caution his hosts not to attack Iran pre-emptively while world powers pursue fresh sanctions against Tehran.

In an interview with the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, Biden emphasized Washington's efforts to drum up greater international diplomatic pressure on the Iranians, as well as unilateral measures imposed by the U.S. Treasury.

Asked about the prospect of an Israeli attack, he said, "though I cannot answer the hypothetical questions you raised about Iran, I can promise the Israeli people that we will confront, as allies, any security challenge it will face. A nuclear-armed Iran would constitute a threat not only to Israel - it would also constitute a threat to the United States."

Meanwhile on Monday, Defense Minister Ehud Barak has said that Iran does not pose an existential threat to Israel.

"Iran isn't an existential threat to Israel at the moment, but it has the potential to develop into one, and we are working to prevent that," said Barak, speaking before the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.

Biden, however, emphasized the Iranian threat and reiterated the United States' commitment to Israel.

"[The Obama administration] gives Israel annual military aid worth $3 billion. We revived defense consultations between the two countries, doubled our efforts to ensure Israel preserves its qualitative military edge in the region, expanded our joint exercises and cooperation on missile-defense systems."

Israel, which is believed to have the region's only atomic arsenal, bombed Iraq's nuclear reactor in 1981 and, in 2007, launched a similar sortie against Syria.

Those tactical challenges, and U.S. reluctance to see a new regional war, has led some analysts to predict Israel will eventually come round to a strategy of "containing" Iran - which denies its controversial uranium enrichment is for bombs.

Biden, who arrives in Jerusalem on Monday and departs Israel on Thursday, was not expected to take part in indirect Israeli-Palestinian talks that would be spearheaded by Obama's special envoy, George Mitchell, and could be announced during his visit, although he will be briefed on them.

U.S.-Israeli tensions flared over Obama's early push for a complete freeze on settlement construction in the West Bank.

Obama has since embraced a more limited, 10-month moratorium on new building announced by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in November.

Obama's has been trying to reach out to the Muslim world, a priority he highlighted with high-profile visits to Egypt and Saudi Arabia, and, later this month, to Indonesia.

"We certainly believe that when the United States effectively builds bridges with Muslim communities, this allows us to promote our interests, including interests that Israel benefits from," Biden told Yedioth.

"The construction freeze was a unilateral decision by the Israeli government, and it is not part of an agreement with the American administration or with the Palestinians," he said.

"It is not everything that we wanted, but it is an important action that has significant impact on the ground," said Biden.

Biden's meetings in Jerusalem will begin Tuesday morning, when he will meet with President Shimon Peres at the President's Residence in Jerusalem. He will then continue on to the prime minister's Jerusalem residence to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and advisers. Following a private session, the two leaders will hold a joint press conference.

Biden will address the Israeli public at Tel Aviv University on Thursday, during which time he will discuss U.S.-Israel ties and U.S. President Barack Obama's vision for the peace process and dealing with the Iranian nuclear threat.

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden.

SDHD: "You were whining for weeks about the freeze being "partial" and not 100%. It dawned on you then. Why isn`t it dawning on you now?" Only a blithering fool could read my post and fail to see its central point i.e. that it is the TIMING of this announcement that is telling. That Israel tramples all over its own "freeze" comes as no surprise to anyone, least of all to me. But it is telling that Israel should ANNOUNCE that it is prostituting its unilateral "gesture" precisely when Biden and Mitchell are on approach to Tel Aviv airport. That makes the Israeli "gesture" crystal-clear i.e. Barak's "gesture" is to poke his thumb in their eye. You can't see that, SDHD? Man, what's that old parable about motes and beams?????

How can the current US administration claim to be trying to "contain Iran" when it funds and rewards US and foreign corporations that actively do business with Iran? I guess it's consistent with surrounding the US president with good Jews, just as FDR did in the 30's. This allowed FDR to pursue a policy of not allowing Jewish refugees from Europe into the US. The Obama administration in turn does not have to allow Israel to continue its existence.

The Bush administration was controlled by the Neo-Cons which took care of Israeli interests which they asserted overlapped with those of the USA... Inside of Obama's administration Obama has less say than Bush did... It's obvious that Obama was hatched, groomed, served up in the right packaging to a populace at wit's end, duly voted in and installed by those groups who now are aiding and abetting Israel in entering the final straight in the internationally adjudged illegal acquisition of Palestinian land... Obama's words are only paying lip-service to Arab countries with no real intention to follow through on the grand gestures... With so many die-hard Zionists inside the administration, how could it ever be otherwise... Obama's term will be historic for Israel as so much will be gained during it... Coupled with Netenyahu's leadership and no-holds-barred style, the ever increasingly over-confident and aggressive assault on Palestinian aspirations is so palpable that it must be part of the game-plan which was set in motion under ben-Gurion... namely to get all the land despite the agreement and pledges made and by any means available. Obama is a straw man... an uncle Tom...

In the meantime Bibi finishes accumulating Palestinian homes and land, walling it in and stalling as long as he needs to. Obama must be aware of and agree to this since only an idiot would look at this and not know what is going on. It appears that Bibi is setting us all up for the next major conflict here and everyone is powerless to stop him.

It is not that diplomacy does not work. It is that the time for diplomacy was back in 2001-2003 when the US had the political, military and economic advantage. Unfortunately, the Iranian threat was ignored. Remember that this was a time when Iran actually looked to the US for protection against al-Qaeda. The Chinese and Russians were not as invested in Iran as they are now. We actually had a moment of opportunity back then, which the Bush administration totally ignored.

We have long destroyed our position in the world as a leader of peace, justice and equal treatment under international law, by dictating to some nations, interfering in their internal affairs and favoring one, with huge financial and political support. ...the Iranians will use this to blackmail the world (including the Arabs). There is no consensus among world leaders to handle this out of control situation. As far as missile range is concerned, the US troupes are clearly in range of an attack. Missile accuracy was an issue previously, but Iran has already utilized technology from other countries (like N. Korea) to remedy that. The rhetoric coming out of Iran is becoming more and more beligerant and confrontational with the West. Perhaps a secondary benefit of this behavior is that it makes Arabs feel less threatened; even part of Persia's Grand Plan for now... The killers of Anwar Sadat are glorified in Iran where a street is named in their honor.

If we could get the World off the necessity for Iran's oil today, we could bankrupt Iran's expansion tomorrow, but it seems we can't get ourselves out of this right now. There is something that we could do right now, that would certainly put a stop to it. That would be to cut them off by mining the waterways ourselves. It wouldn't take a naval blockade necessarily. But it would be an extremely and costly gamble because it would be an act of war, and Iran would retaliate with whatever it has. It also w/could spark a World War III type of scenario. It's hard to say what it would be like. China would be inclined to do something because it's growth would be stymied. Nations like Russia, Turkey, Syria, and Venezuela would help Iran. Iran would bombard Israel, Jordan, and Egypt with missiles. Yeah, it would be WWIII. Just a thought. There is a possibility that if Iran reacted in such a way that it cut it's supply of oil to China and Russia, the Russians and the Chinese could attack Iran too.

America is too weak to make peace and the American politicians are dominated by the Israel lobby. This means that Israel will be able to carry on with even the most outrageous plans. Lately though, we have seen a series of blunders from Israel. In 2000, Hizbollah completed the process of ending the Israeli occupation of Lebanon. This is the first time that Israel was forced out of occupied territory by local militia. In the 2006 war, Hizbollah stood its ground with the IDF and denied Israel from accomplishing any of its several objectives. In the Gaza op, the Israeli slaughter of civilians was exposed, outraging world opinion. It has become obvious that the Israeli leadership is not so smart and relies heavily on America for political, financial, and military support. In the end, as Israeli policy and actions becomes even more stupid and provocative, even America will not be able to support the result.

Under a 1995 Advisory Opinion the ICJ has said that possession by a State of nuclear weapons is not a violation of customary int law. But it IS a violation of treaty law if the State is a non nuclear weapons State party to the NPT eg Iran. By ratifying the NPT and Safeguards Agreement, Iran has received all kinds of nuclear materials, technology and other benefits from the IAEA in return for its express agreement not to use these for military purposes, and to submit to a stringent inspections regime. Israel is under no such legal constraint. It is not a party to the NPT and has received no benefits from the IAEA. Nor is there any legal obligation on Israel to join the NPT or indeed on any State to become a party to any treaty. Iran, on the other hand, has acted illegally since at least 2006 by violating its treaty obligations regarding inspections and verification under its 1974 NPT Safeguards Agreement with the IAEA (IAEA Board of Governors Res. GOV/2006/14 (4 Feb. 2006)).

US to defend Israel from NUKE-ARMED Iran

That's a Freudian slip. What Beiden is saying, is that the US will (1) allow Iran to become a nuclear power, and (2) only DEFEND Israel from an Iranian nuclear attack in progress. That means only, say, half the Iranian nukes wull get through to Israeli cities. If all Obama's people have to offer Israel is talk, they should at least have talk that promises something. Face it, Israel -- My country plans on doing nothing to help you. Either you help yourself, or we will make fancy memorials for your 6 million dead -- the NEW dead, not the WWII ones.

What Biden says is a classical and funny lie

Everybody, Israelis, Americans, Iranians, everybody knows that Iran will never use these weapons. Iranians are not stupid, they would not do something that is guaranteed to bring an instant death to their whole nation by messing around with the nukes. They just want to prooduce the nukes, that is it, for psychological satisfaction more than anything else. Iranian nukes, even theoretically constitute a threat to the Americans, their missile range is not enough. So Biden is lying. American policy is that if you lie day and night over and over again, you make other people believe in your nonsense at the end. As simple as that.

"Barak just signed off on another 112 apartments, Joe. Were you aware of that before - or only after - Barak jabbed his thumb in your eye?" Blithering fool. You were whining for weeks about the freeze being "partial" and not 100%. It dawned on you then. Why isn't it dawning on you now?

It is a simple request. What does Joe Biden mean by a 'nuclear Iran'. Because Iran is allowed to have technology to produce electricity using nuclear power. It is a legitimate question, as it would be a legitimate question if Israel wanted a nuclear power capability then Israel should be required to sign the NPT. The fact of the matter is Iran under the NPT is allowed to have nuclear power, and under the NPT Iran is allowed to enrich Uranium to provide fuel for those nuclear reactors. It is also a fact that Israel cannot stop iran having nuclear power militarily, and therefore it is again important that Joe Biden defines what he means by a nuclear Iran. Because whether or not there is another war in the middle east is predicated by that definition. You might not like it but Iran is entitled under International Law to have a nuclear power programme.

The F22 production line has been closed down. The F22 is no longer in production. Israel will have to wait until they recieve (if they recieve) the F35.

The F35 project is in limbo with failing production deadlines. If Joe Biden wants to redouble efforts to guarantee Israel's qualitative edge, green-lighting the sale of F22 to Israel would be more than symbolic.

The Iranian strategy is to temporize and lie while working feverishly behind the scenes to increase its enrichment capacity. Even the IAEA has said that Iran is cheating on its disclosure obligations under the Safeguards Agreement. And still no new sanctions. Wake up Joe and wake your President up while you're at it. The Iranians have made fools out of you both - and that's as big a threat to the security of the US and the region as the prosepct of a future Iranian bomb.

Biden: "The construction freeze was a unilateral decision by the Israeli government, and it is not part of an agreement with the American administration or with the Palestinians," Barak just signed off on another 112 apartments, Joe. Were you aware of that before - or only after - Barak jabbed his thumb in your eye? Biden: "It is not everything that we wanted, but it is an important action that has significant impact on the ground," Barak has just OK'ed another 112 "significant impacts on the ground", Joe. Were you aware of that decision before - or only after - Little Ehud made a fool of you?
