Biden: Israel won't attack Iran before sanctions allowed to work

U.S. Vice President: Everyone agrees on sanctions; Jim Jones: Mideast peace failures strengthen Iran.

By Natasha Mozgovaya and Reuters Tags: Iran sanctions Iran nuclear Israel news

U.S. Vice President tells ABC's 'The View' that 'everyone agrees the next step against Iran should be the sanctions route.'

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden said on Thursday he expects new United Nations sanctions on Iran by late April or early May and dismissed the notion that Israel might attack the Islamic Republic before first allowing sanctions to take their course.

Biden issued the latest U.S. warning to Iran, which is locked in a standoff with the West over its nuclear program, in an appearance on ABC television's "The View" talk show.

"Everyone from the Israeli prime minister straight through to the British prime minister to the president of Russia, everyone agrees the next step we should take is the UN sanction route," Biden said.

"I believe you will see a sanction regime coming out by the end of this month, beginning of next month," he said.

Asked whether Washington was concerned that Israel might attack its arch-foe Iran without U.S. consultation, Biden said, "They're not going to do that."He said Israel had agreed to await the outcome of tightened sanctions against Iran, an effort being led by U.S. President Barack Obama.

"They've agreed the next step is the step we - the president of the United States - have initiated in conjunction with European powers, the NATO powers," he said.

Israel, the only assumed nuclear weapons power in the Middle East, has made clear it is keeping open the military option against Iran even as Washington proceeds on the dual diplomatic and sanctions track.

Biden reiterated the administration's view that China, one of five veto-holding members of the UN Security Council, would support new sanctions on Iran. Beijing has softened its resistance to new measures but has been reluctant to accept punitive steps as severe as Washington wants.

"We're going to continue to keep the pressure on Iran," Biden said. The West accused Iran of seeking to develop nuclear weapons, but Tehran says it only wants peaceful civilian nuclear power.

U.S.: Israel-Palestinian peace failures strengthening Iran

On Wednesday, the Obama administration said that progress toward Middle East peace would help thwart Iran's ambitions by preventing it from "cynically" using the conflict to divert attention from its nuclear program.

Drawing an explicit link between Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts and Washington's drive to isolate Iran, Obama's national security adviser, Jim Jones, urged bold steps to revive long-stalled Middle East negotiations.

U.S. officials hope that shared Arab-Israeli concerns about Iran can be exploited to spur old foes to help advance Israeli-Palestinian peace and restrain Tehran's nuclear activities and rising influence in the region.

Jones coupled an appeal to Israel and its Arab neighbors to take risks for peace with a warning to Iran that it would face "real consequences" for its nuclear defiance. Obama is leading a push to tighten UN sanctions on Tehran.

"One of the ways that Iran exerts influence in the Middle East is by exploiting the ongoing Arab-Israeli conflict," Jones told the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

"Advancing this peace would ... help prevent Iran from cynically shifting attention away from its failures to meet its obligations," he said.

The Israeli government, locked in a dispute with the United States over Jewish settlement policy, has made clear it sees confronting Iran as more of a security priority for Washington, and Middle East peace should be handled on a separate track.

Jones - while voicing disappointment over the failure to jumpstart U.S.-sponsored indirect peace talks - insisted progress toward peace is a U.S. interest as well.

That seemed to echo Obama's assertion last week that a two-state solution to the decades-old conflict was "a vital national security interest", adding to speculation that he was considering his own broad peace proposal.

Israeli talk of attacking is all macho bravado anyway. Iran is no two-bit country like Syria or Iraq. I'd say the Israelis are shared shi....less that they might have to deliver on their threats. Attack Iran and you'll unleash a Pandora's box of unexpected blowbacks that you will regret you started.

I think it must be somehow conforting for you to believe - from our "safe" country in the middle of Europe - that Israel should trust her neighbors and withdraw in order to get peace and security. But you don't have to confuse your "noble thoughts" with reality, expecially if you are not the person - since you will keep sitting in your Swiss armchair - who will eventually suffer the consequences of your wrong views and decisions.

The Persians know how to survive. They know how to align with the regional powers, Russia and China. They have a steady source of income. They know how to pluck the heart strings of fellow Muslims (US/Israeli Devils). They know how to get their nuclear bomb by building deep underground and playing the West off each other to resist meaningful sanctions and to buy time. A desperate US turning on a cornered Israel to force a "peace" so that Iran can be countered (a joke), is playing perfectly into Persian hands. It is embarrassing to see how the US could allow itself to be duped so easily. If the Israelis and Pals were to become best friends tomorrow, and inlaws the next, the Iranians would still want their nukes. And the region would still be forced to follow suit. Maybe the US is saying to Israel: The region is going nuclear, so make nice or you'll get nuked.

Wrong again. As long as Hizbolah 'rules' in Lebanon (through threats and terror) Lebanon cannot make peace with Israel. Remove Hizbolah, namely remove Iran from Lebanon politics and there is a chance Lebanon will make peace. And you cannot remove Iran from Lebanon politics as long as the world lets it acquire nukes. Likewise in Gaza, remove Hamas from power and there is a better chance of peace.

there is no doubt that obama's policies are emboldening and strngthening iran and proportionally weakening the us. blaming israel for the crisis with iran is ourtageous and historically wrong. iran has regarded the us as an enemy since the islamic revolution which led to the invasion of the us embassy and the hostage taking of its diplomats. iran has been killing americans in lebanon, in iraq and afghanistan. iran has been developing nuclear weeapons and ballistic missiles for decades with the purpose of increasing its power. any attempt to link iran's nuclear weapons program with the palestinian issue is highly cynical and dishonest. such attempts at linkage only embolden iran and other islamic terrorists and increase anti-israel sentiments and even antisemitism. as such, it is irresponsible.

There is no way that Hezbollah could continue to act in the same way as today, if Lebanon would have a peace treaty with Israel. And there is also no way that Hamas could continue acting in the same way as today, if a viable Palestinian state in the West Bank would have a peace treaty with Israel, and would therefore blossom economically. Not because Hamas would wanna change, but because the people in Gaza would make them change, if they would see, how well their brothers in the West Bank are doing.

Wrong analysis Swiss Dino. Even if all the Arabs recognised Israel as the Jewish State, Hamas and Hizbolah (aided by Syria militarily and Turkey verbally) would not recognise Israel and would continue their alliance with Iran, thus giving Iran a continued excuse to meddle in the Israel-Palestinian conflict, and a good excuse to pursue a nuclear policy. However , if Hizbolah who cant' complain about Israeli occupation , and Hamas concentrated on Gaza and peace with its own people on the West Bank and Fatah, discussed peace instead of war, resulting in Jews living peacefully in their homes and Arabs living peacefully in their homes, then and only then Iran would have no excuse. In any case , the truth is Iran has no business in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict or in the Arab gulf States; it is obvious Iran is the expansionist party here : expanding Islam by any means throughout the world and stealing Bahrain and other Gulf States if they could. !

Try a small bit of common sense: - does Iran call the US Army the "Zionist Crusader Army"? - Does Iran exploit every opportunity to convince Muslims that it, alone, stands against the US? - Does anyone thnk that any country but the US can handle Iran? - Does anyone realize that the US Army has about 10 regular divisions, of which three have been in Iraq and a fourth in Afghanistan ever since the Bush administration decided to overthrow Saddam Hussein? Understand that American troops serve 12 - 18 month deployments, using the between-mission months to recuperate and recruit? - Count them: at any one time, eight of the ten regular divisions are in the middle east. One division stays in South Korea as a "trip-wire". - Hooah???? - Does anyone still believe the Israeli military fantasy that "one more wack in the head" will frighten Palestinians into submission? - Is there any beginning to a solution other than to give back the captured territories?

It has nothing to do with the Palestinians. For as any sane person in the world knows, it was Arab and Muslim rejectionism that led to the Palestinian plight, and not the other way around. It has been touted by the Muslims as the excuse for decades, and forcing Israel into a one-sided "peace" the Palestinians don't agree to won't stop Iran from shipping weapons to Hamas and Hizbulla. Only once these nations recongnize Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state will they stop shipping weapons. And the American Administration not keeping a single promise on the Iran issue is what's making Obama look worthless, emboldening Iran.

Cynical is for the US administration to shift the focus away from dealing with Iran (which it is either unwilling and uncapable of) to the presumed absence of progress in the Middle East process. The Arab-Israeli conflict is more than 100 years old. To claim we must first tackle this complex problem (currently a low level conflict) before we can effectively deal with Iran simply means "we don't really intend to deal with Iran, let's find somebody to blame".I remember a recent accusation by some luny that the Middle East conflict shifts the focus away from and thus impeds dealing with global warming.
