Barak: Politicians today tainted by pre-Rabin killing incitement
Defense Min. blames some current public office holders for incitement that led up to former PM's killing.
By Jonathan Lis and Haaretz Service Tags: Avi Dichter Yigal Amir Yitzhak RabinSome of Israel's public office holders today are tainted by their part in the incitement that led up to the assassination of former prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, Defense Minister Ehud Barak told Israel Radio late Tuesday.
During the period leading up to Rabin's killing, members of the right-wing - including currently active politicians - campaigned against the former prime minister over his support for the Oslo peace process. The preceding atmosphere of incitement against Rabin, with posters depicting him as a Nazi distributed by extreme rightists in some instances, is often blamed for encouraging the assassination.
Barak made his comments on the annual day of commemoration for Rabin according to the Hebrew calendar, which began Tuesday evening with the lighting of a memorial candle at the official residence of President Shimon Peres.
The defense minister also said that Yigal Amir, Rabin's jailed assassin, would not be released or pardoned. He was responding to a recent media campaign by extreme rightists calling for the killer's release.
Barak said in the radio interview that the murderer himself is not important, and hoped that people would focus on the real lessons of the assassination. These he listed as: The need for patience, education to instill responsibility, and for brotherly love instead of baseless hatred.
Peres, who was with Rabin on the night of his assassination at the end of a Tel Aviv peace rally on November 4, 1995, said at the ceremony at his official residence: "I remember that night. It started like an invigorating beam of sunshine, when enthusiastic masses filled Kikar Malchei Yisrael [later renamed Rabin Square]. The podium on which we stood was washed by a poignant wave of hope, coming from the restless crowd.
"I stood by Yitzhak's side; his face was glowing at this demonstration of touching, beautifully spontaneous support. At the same time, the vile, ruthless enemy was waiting, cold-hearted, down the stairs, holding a loaded gun in his hand. He shot Yitzhak's back, and injured our nation's heart. Neither our nation nor history could ever forgive this scoundrel."
Peres, who was the deputy premier and foreign minister at the time, also said: "I was left by myself facing a troubled reality, a society in agony and the urgent need to come to our senses and move on. Even with the absence of our senior partner, our country should remain steadfast. We should cherish Yitzhak's way and never lose it. This was his last will and testament."
"Today," the president added, "twelve years on, the path he paved for us re-emerges. The path of peace has not been lost."
Rabin's sister, Rachel Ya'akov, also spoke at the ceremony. "Another year has gone by, and the pain has not gone away. The longings have not waned, and what has been going on recently does not improve things," she said.
Also on Tuesday, Israeli media quoted Rabin's daughter Dalia as having said that the death penalty should have been applied in the case of Yigal Amir.
On Monday, police gave Dalia Rabin a video cassette of Amir's initial interrogation shortly after the killing. "I decided to kill him, to neutralize him politically," Amir said on the tape. When asked if he regretted his actions, Amir is recorded as having said, "Heaving forbid. I don't regret it."
Amir's wife, Larisa Trembovler, urged Attorney General Menachem Mazuz Tuesday to open an investigation against Police Commissioner David Cohen, whom she accuses of leaking the cassette to the media. "The criminal law code prohibits the disclosure of tapes of police interrogations, and he should be brought to justice," she said.
Meanwhile, Public Security Minister Avi Dichter compared Amir Tuesday to a "mummy sitting in prison," adding that "Amir is neither worthy enough nor important enough" to become the focus of a debate over the death penalty in Israel.
The ultra-nationalist Amir is serving life imprisonment for the killing. The death penalty in Israel has only been used once, against Nazi Holocaust mastermind Adolf Eichmann.
Amir, who was standing near Rabin's car after the peace rally that night, explains that he decided not to shoot then-foreign minister Peres, who came down the steps at Kikar Malchei Yisrael a few minutes before Rabin, because he was merely a "secondary target."
"Afterward Rabin came down accompanied by security men. I approached him before he entered his car, fired three bullets at him and then the security men jumped on me and I threw down the gun," Amir told the police during questioning.

I saw the destroyed Altalena and wept--Rabin received justice for his killing of fellow Jews and Christian's that came to Israel's aid--If you had seen that burned out hulk, you too would probably have cried--Where people now enjoy themselves at luxurious hotels was the site of a latter day Masada--Instead of Romans scaling the ramparts, it was Rabin's gunners strafing the vessel--Rabin, Yemach Sh'mo
People do not stop the insulting even if somebody is dead. It tell a lot of those writers in this Talkback. How much hate, attitudes and desire for the revenge they transfer to their children.(I also wonder what kind fathers and spouses they might be .Loving, caring?)
Avramele could use a visit to the Jabotinsky House in Tel Aviv. Members of the Irgun had mostly integrated into the unified Haganah forces at the time of the Altalena affair. Begin wanted a small percentage of arms from the ship to go to Irgun forces in Jerusalem. I would imagine that once Ben Gurion knew that Begin was on the ship, he saw a way to eliminate a rival. The Haganah commander in charge of troops at the site of where the Altalena wanted to land refused the order to fire on the ship. Rabin and the Palmach were brought in to do the deed and the firing commenced. Begin ordered his men NOT to return fire and thus kill fellow Jews. Luckily Ben Gurion did not succeed in killing him.
Why did a security guard scream: "blanks blanks", so that Amir would not be harmed? Why did the admitting doctor first say that Rabin's wounds were from the front, not the back? How could Rabin take three steps and enter the car, on his own, after taking three bullets to the back? interesting questions.
One must not forget that most of the incitement quoted by the left was done by an agent of Shin Bet, Raviv who was protected before and after the assassination. It was he who had printed, distributed and made sure that the poster of Rabin in Nazi garb was shown by the press. He also staged the Eyal swearing in ceremony was was reported at the site of the assassination. Many fingers are being pointed in the wrong direction and an honest press would include all of the information.
Why was Leah Rabin repeatedly told by the SHABAK right after the shooting "Yitzhak is all right, it was an excercise, the shots were blanks"? (taken from her autobiography". Why was Yigal Amir, whose identity card was checked by the police prior to the shooting, allowed into the sterile area? Why did SHABAK provocateur Avishai Raviv call several reporters a couple of minutes after the shooting and say "we missed this time, we will get him the next time?". Why was SHABAK chief Carmi Gillon, who failed to protect Rabin and was the responsible for the biggest failure in the SHABAK's history, given two big jobs by Peres afterwards (1) to be head of the Shimon Peres Peace Center and (2) Ambassador to Denmark?
you forgot to mention that the original photo of Rabin in a Nazi uniform was created by a shabak informant for the government at the time, Avishai Raviv, in an attempt to inflitrate right wign groups.
You slander Jonathan Pollard and, therefore, your second name should be culpa. Why is Pollard, who did not betray us to an enemy, still iin prison? To prove the true weakness of "the Jewish lobby? perhaps?
But of course you are not remisstop call to mind that Rabin, acting under Ben-Gurion's orders did what Begin would not do-- fire on Jews. Begin would have horrified and distraught, I believe, that a Jew would kill Rabin. Given Altalena, would Rabin, however, have understood?
Rabin was not a coward, never would have divided Jerusalem and was honest, competent and sincere. Olmert is the antithesis of Yitzzak Rabin.
But Peres Can Forgive the Terrorist Murderers who want Israel destroyed lob shells into sederot, blow themselves up in croded busses. What a hypocrite. http://ralphsrant1.blogspot.com/
Why doesAmir desserve a worse treatment than a child rapist and turturer, or from a Mafia cold blooded murderer or a guy who killed 4-5 poeple while driving under the influence? All men are equal to the law...........
8. And Cain spoke to Abel his brother, and it came to pass when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and slew him. Rashi : And Cain spoke. He entered with him into words of quarrel and contention, to find a pretext to kill him. There are Aggadic interpretations on this matter, but this is the plain meaning of the verse. Rashi explains that the murder was intentional , all needed was a pretext , Those are Peres words " It started like an invigorating beam of sunshine ,...At the same time, the vile, ruthless enemy was waiting, cold-hearted,... holding a loaded gun in his hand...." , Yeah , Amir will rot in jail , but then PLO exploited as pretext the infamous Oslo Accords and it cost us Israeli lives , Can Peres bring back those Israelis killed thru the pretext of infamous Oslo Accords , If Peres knew back then the price of the infamous Oslo Accords would Peres pressed on with his 'sunshine beam' , for his 'beam of sunshine' Peres will keep on pushin' for 'core issues" and 'political horizons' ,
Why let arab terrorists out of jail when they are guaranteed to murder again, and not let Amir out?? We don't buy your lets worship Rabin jazz. He was a traitor and died a traitor. May the same happen to all the other many traitors littering the Knesset.
AND RABIN FOR THE: 1) 2000 MURDERED JEWS BECAUSE OF THE OSLO DEATH PROCESS!!! 2) ALTALENA! FREEDOM OF SPEECH IS DEMOCRACY!IS HAARETZ DEMOCRATIC?
Prison seems like a lenient sentence for someone who commits the heinous crime of murder, and in particular someone who tries to kill peace. How can this be justified or een forgiven even laying aside Our Lords commandments. He should be left to rot!
Its remarkable that The posting of Ralph's finds a place in Haaretz talkback. But if that is ok, I claim that the editor of Haaretz is also involved. find out where he was the evening of the tragic event...
maybe he should be released after all he spared shimon peres, didn't he? or was he instructed by shaback to spare shimon?
nor EVER forget YITZCHAK RABIN 'ZL' Shalom Chaver :(
Peres knows exactly what happens, he organized the assassination.
Where would he had been if not for the demise of the previous Supremo?
ALTALENA. WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND. CENSOR, IT IS JUST AN OPIONION NOT INCITEMENT.
I am sure all relatives of victims of murder would talk of death penalty. And yes, they are justified. However, Rabin and his political successors have opposed this, and thru their so called peace policies have allowed thousands of Israelis to be murdered at teh hands of their "partners". Only a few days ago, Olmert was almost killed by his peace partners. So perhaps Olmert should kill his partners inpeace, before offering more sacrifices to them.
The religious right in Israel needs to shed this trend (this very american style trend) of repackaging criminals into folk heros and trying to wholesale them to the public. It's a very unfortunate choice of a path to go down...and since american olim are the trendsetters, I seriously caution the religious Jews of Israel to stem this tide before it does further damage in your relationships. G-d does not want murderers and traitors idolized.
to make y amir to a non-human (not mentioning his name in the title)is a typical stalinistic trick of big brother to justify the inhumane treatment doted out to punish non-believers to dicters idology.in his utter blindness he believes in the rightness of his position of totaltalitarism or shall it be better said utalitarism(what ever is most expediant becomes morally correct)the truth of the agent avshai playing the naieve amir like a violin can be suppresed but the truth will come out eventually is not the lesson of agent-provociter historically been learnt ?come now all ye faithful -lets decree crime and punishment.forever the true karma prevails in an unfolding wicked world where thoes in power stand in awe when death does them part this life and universal darma mightly pevails. 0
1. Amir attacked and murdered a living breathing person but his target was Israeli democracy and the rule of law -- the sentence is justified 2. The Altelena and its arms cache represented an attack on the concept of a unified democratic Jewish state and a clear message neede to be conveyed that Begin's militias must be disbanded or integrated into the start up IDF. (which ultimately occurred along with the left wing Palmach). However tragic, it was an appropriate though admittedly controversial action. Rabin was a loyal commander in the operation. 3. We should wish Abbas had the clarity of vision of Ben Gurion. 4. Bargouti is an external threat to Israel not an internal one. In my mind his fate is not a matter of principle but a political calculation based on expediency. If his release furthers the security of the state then it should be considered.
Murderers should be put to death, wether they be Samir Kuntar, or Yigal Amir.
16 unarmed Jews were killed by whom? Missing parts in Rabin's biography.
Since Amir admitted to Rabin's murder he should sit in Jail for the rest of his life. What botheres is the hypocricy of the left that not only are they talking of releasing mass murderer marwan barguiti, but they have little talks like he is somthing relevant. Should we be shocked when such a substantial minority of israelis want to see Amir released when they see that muuder is no big deal-so why shouldn't Amis be freed.
It's tiresome to hear about Amir ad his wife and their expected child. Who cares whether he's allowed to go to the bris or not? It's much more newsworthy to investigate the truth (or lack of) about the assassination - why are there so many unanswered questions? Why is there no commission of inquiry to deal with all this??
J. E. Hoover said of the JFK coup: "If the truth got out it would destroy the foundations of American democracy." Citizins don't like government agencies which murder their elected head of state and then cover it up. Dichter, like Hoover, ran domestic intelligence. He knows better than anyone the DAMAGE (his) system of power would suufer should the Rabin truth be exposed. So like a speechless "mummy": keep it buried.
peacenik pushing for release of the most abominable pal murderers . When it comes to her own loss though a death on stake wouldn't suffice to punish the culprit according to her.
Too bad Amir didn't get a bullet to the head as soon as he fired himself. It would have saved us all a lot of trouble.
""Amir is not worthy enough nor important enough" that he become the focus of a debate in Israel over the death penalty. " Exactly. How about ignoring him and letting him rot in prison for the rest of his life? Bringing in the death penalty will be a sign of moral slippage in Israel. Putting aside consideration of what it does to the executioner, even one mistaken execution in a thousand, even in a million, is enough to make the process morally reprehensible.
The place for people who murder is prison and the term should be for life.
