Barak: Israel won't be pressured into signing nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty

Defense Minister stresses that unlike other nations, Israel has never threatened to annihilate another nation.

By Amos Harel Tags: Ehud Barak Israel nuclear Israel news

Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Wednesday that Israel would not be pressured into signing the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, stressing that unlike other countries, Israel had never threatened to destroy another nation.

"There is no room to pressure Israel to join the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Israel has never threatened to annihilate other nations and peoples, while today Iran, and also Syria, Libya and Iraq in the past, all of whom signed this treaty, have systematically violated its stipulations while explicitly threatening Israel's existence," Barak said during a memorial service for fallen Israel Defense Forces soldiers at the Defense Ministry.

"These days," he went on to say, "the threats against Israel have not ceased. Facing these threats is a strong army, ready and prepared, with the entire Israeli people behind it."

On Tuesday, United States President Barack Obama urged all countries, including Israel, to sign the international nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, or NPT.

"Whether we're talking about Israel or any other country, we think that becoming part of the NPT is important," Obama said. "And that, by the way, is not a new position. That's been a consistent position of the United States government, even prior to my administration."

Israel operates a policy of 'nuclear ambiguity,' refusing to neither confirm nor deny possessing atomic weapons - but has not signed the treaty and is believed by analysts to posses between 200 and 300 nuclear warheads.

The PLO was established in 1964-65. As most of you know well, PLO stands for palestine LIBERATION organization. So the question is, what were they trying to LIBERATE in 1964? I am curious as we all know that there were no "occupied territories" in 1964 as that only came about 3 years later as a result of the 1967 war where the arabs tried to destroy israel and failed miserably in six days, thus creating the issue of the so called 'occupied' territories. what was the PLO trying to liberate in 1964? if someone can answer this, it would clear up much confusion! :-)

Israel's decision not to formally confirm their existance, much less sign the NPT protocal may be a matter of diplomatic difficulty for Obama and others who are understandably trying to get full compliance. But in terms of the broader mission of NPT, no doubt most of the responsible parties involved would concede the certainty that Israel's nukes are not going to fall into the hands of dangerous third parties. or any third parties.

There are 191 UN member states. All but five have signed the NPT. (India, Pakistan, N. Korea, Israel -- points to any Talkbacker who can name the fifth.) You are judged by the company you keep. Even presuming that Ahjmadinejad's inflammatory bluster is an "exterminationist threat," why does that render the NPT a threat for Israel? All the joining (as a declared weapons state, like the U.S. and the other five nuclear states) would mean is that Israel would be obliged not to transfer weapons technology to others, and to work toward disarmament. Keep in mind, Israel not only threatened to wipe Palestine off the map, it actually did so.

you sound like you are a supporter of the taliban and al qaida. israel only ever responds to arab hostility. that is by law, completely legitimate. as for the so called occupied territories: tell me, why was the PLO established as a "liberation" organization in 1964-65? There was no so called west bank or gaza "occupation" at that time. So what was it established to "LIBERATE" in 1964? by the way, in latest polls, over 85% of americans support a US military strike on irans nuke facilites if all other options fail..and they have and will. If obama has any long term political smarts, he would hit em and hit em hard. It will guarantee his second term which right now, is definitely in doubt. I will await your answer fahmida from pakistan.

Israel destroyed the Palestinian state in 1948? Huh? Last time I checked, the Zionists were the one who accepted the partition, and the Jordanians were the ones who occupied the West Bank for almost two decades before Israel occupied it. Why are they free from blame? If the Zionist movement never existed, a "Palestinian" nation wouldn't have been sought. It'd just be what it had been for centuries; a piece of land owned by some other nation. The existence of Palestinian nationalism only exists because of the existence of Israel, so don't tell me the Zionists destroyed the Palestinian nation. Au contraire, they created it.

What does Israel gain from signing the NPT? Unlike Islamic Iran who has signed to get assistance and then violated her word, Israel has no such need of assistance. A treaty benefits both sides. Unless Israel benefits she has no reason to sign.

Israel is a tiny country about the size of New Jersey surrounded by the Mediterranean sea in the west and hostile Arab states on the north, east and south. Israel's 7 million population is made up of about 5 million Jews. The rest are Arabs, Christians, Armenians and others. But Israel's hostile neighbors that make up the Arab league are over 100 million in population, many of them like Saudi Arabia, Libya are oil rich countries. Lebanon, Syria and many other Arab nations still do not recognize Israel to this day. Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran are not shy in declaring that they would like to destroy Israel or wipe it out of the map. This is why Israel needs to pursue a deterrent and therefore ambiguous policy when it comes to nuclear arms. It is only to send the message to its hostile neighbors that if Israel comes to the point of wiped out it will not go without sinking its attacker with her. Otherwise Israel will not (and practically can not) use them.

    • Manny Goldstein
    • 14.04.10
    • 21:27

You cannot have it both ways, refuse to sign the NPT and pursue the policy of 'nuclear ambiguity' but at the same time try to create an effective campaign to prevent Iran becoming a nuclear power. Such sophistry will no longer work and is a dangerous distraction form reality. There will not be an effective sanctions program against Iran, there is no viable military option to prevent Iran going nuclear so it is time to come to terms with the real situation. A policy to discuss how to deal with a nuclear Iran is needed, anything less is both a delusion and a distraction.

Actions by Israel, not threats alone, proves Israel has no regard for international law unless it swings in Israel's favour. What a pathetic excuse put forth by Ehud Barak in an attempt for Israel to continue on its path of nuclear double standards! It is way past time Israel's allies stopped pretending Israel is 'the only democracy in the Middle East' and sees it for what it really is, a rogue nation run by an out of control military junta!

Well, I guess I should have mentioned that he does play the piano fairly well. But as a negotiator he is arrogant, a bully and contemptuous. I take it your comments refer to this crap that is part of zionist propganda that he made a "generous" offer in 19993 it as nothing of the kind. Palestinians agreed to accept 22% of Mandate palestine and accepted Israel's 78%. Barak demanded that 69 colonies (in 1993) were to be annexed, keeping 85% of the colonist population in their colonies. Thus, Israel demanded another 10$ to be given up. Palestinians would be cut off from each other by zionist roads and by pass lanes and on top of this Barak demanded "temproary control" of more Palestinian land. Simply another zionist subtrafuge for taking more land and feigning peace.

We obey our own laws when it comes to nuclear weapons. What other nations agree to, Israel claims it is being pressured into doing and it stomps its foot and announces it will not.
