Barak: Israel mustn't allow itself to be blamed if Annapolis fails
Defense Min. says Israel could be blamed for not making enough concessions to Palestinians, being 'stubborn'.
By Barak Ravid Tags: Ehud Barak Annapolis conference Middle East peaceWe mustn't allow ourselves to be blamed for the failure of the upcoming Middle East peace conference in Annapolis, because we didn't make enough concessions to the Palestinians, Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Wednesday at the cabinet meeting in Jerusalem.
The peace conference is scheduled for November 27 and is aimed at relaunching peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.
A confrontation broke out between Barak and Vice Premier Haim Ramon during the cabinet meeting, in which Barak said "even around this table there are those who are contributing to our being blamed for stubbornness."
Ramon responded "if we had offered the Palestinians half of the things presented at Camp David, but with serious consideration and responsibility, we would be able to arrive at Annapolis with a document which would include an accord on core issues."
"Every time we fail to offer what was offered in Camp David, we appear stubborn," he added.
Ramon also criticized the representatives of the defense establishment who presented to the cabinet "scenarios and responses" for the day after the peace summit and the threats facing Israel at this time. "One can't say that if the status quo is maintained that would be bad and if there is a [peace] process it will also be bad. You can't hold the stick at both ends. The political echelon must make a decision, and in every decision there are risks, but also opportunities," he said.
The defense establishment representatives said that according to Israel Defense Forces intelligence, Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas' status among Palestinians is currently weak, and warned against a possible failure of the peace summit. The central message of the defense briefing the representatives gave to the cabinet ministers was that "after the summit, there won't be any positive developments, Abbas will not become stronger and therefore existing Hamas cells in Gaza will grow stronger and there will be a leaking of Hamas from the Strip into the West Bank."Hamas violently seized control over the Gaza Strip in June, overcoming Abbas' rival party Fatah. Since then, Hamas has been essentially isolated in the Gaza Strip, while Fatah retained power in the West Bank.
Several cabinet ministers criticized the defense establishment saying "you need to carry out policies, not dictate them. By what criteria do you conclude [Annapolis] will fail?"

Frankly, witnessing Estonian behaviour between 194o and 1945,as an enthusiastic Nazi Collaborator and post 1992 Estonina removal of monuments commemorating Red Army heroism in defeating the Nazi germany,we Jews wouldn't cry in the milk about it. Seig Heil!
No rational person "Gulps" pistachio nuts--The shells will stick in the throat--Question is, are the nuts accompanied by a Iranian nuke for added taste..??
when you were a child you saw. when i was a child, i lived it. if it wasn't for the Palestinians, i would have had a better childhood.
"a greater threat to world security than Iranian Nukes--Imagine, a pistachio bomb--" - Ben Jabo I opened my mouth. After the initial 'gulp' the Pistachio Bomb tasted pretty good.
I just noticed that you are from the U.S. People like you Stephen make the rest of us look smart. thank you.
subhuman? are you for real????
ex-human? how did you spend your childhood Maureen? did you spend most of if in a bomb shelter? where you injured by shrapnels from bombs that were sent by the "disease"? did your father die on his way to work by an explosion of a car bomb that was set by the "disease"??? So must the Jewish State Leaders legislate , voice and act upon policies for the withdrawal of the murderous arab violent occupier from the Jewish State Homeland , Everyone knows what the Palestinians and the rest of the Islamic world desire in regards to Israel. It's not as if their actions cannot be seen, their sermons heard nor their textbooks read. They demand the complete eradication of Jews from the land. Not from part of it, but from all of it. Witness what happens to some unfortunate Jew who accidentally stumbles into a Palestinian area. It appear easier, after all, to remove 5.4 million Jews from a sliver of land than change a billion Muslim's minds about the Jews' right to exist. Israel finds herself internationally isolated. Worse, she has given herself to be shepherded by a foreign state policy wich she regards as her ally. Road Map Middle East foreign policy is part and parcel anti-Semitic. Were it not so, the Bush Administration would undoubtedly be supporting and fighting alongside a fellow democracy under assault by numerous Islamic terror entities, as America does throughout the rest of the world. It is in Israel, and only in Israel, where Islamic terrorism is not only tolerated by America, but determinedly and actively encouraged to expand and thrive with American money, training and arms. Furthermore, American diplomatic pressure shields these terrorists from significant Israeli retaliation in the aftermath of their strikes against Jewish targets. Additionally, America is the fulcrum by which these terror groups gain concession after concession from the Israelis. It is through America that Islamic terrorists grow stronger. And it is through America that Israel is forced into an increasingly precarious security and strategic positioning.
the Jewish State , By antisemites , by antizionists as pretexts to mock , blame , kill and murder , when you catch them hand on , they flip the coin and justify such murderous antisemitism , antizionism , they even answer that they were just kidding , they also deny or they simply fabricate a pretext ect... they will at best hire lawyers to reverse moral' earth' poles , they want the Jewish State to vaporise , to go up in smoke , they want the Jewish State as a holocaust offering on their idolatre(s) altar(s) ,
IF IT FAILS~ IT'S SUPPOSED TO IF IT FAILS~ IT'S "SUPPOSED" TO NO NEED FOR "ANY" RECRIMINATIONS GOD GAVE THE LAND TO YOU~ NOW IS TIME TO ASK HIM~ WHAT HE WOULD HAVE YOU DO. HESED
Barak has no commonsense - The Pals are clearly staing NO to a Jewish state - do they worry about people blaming them ? Of course, not. Barak is displaying the same STUPIDITY he showed so clearly as Israel's most unsuccessful PM. He almost makes the palmgreaser look not half-bad by comparison.
Quote " Once there is justice, there will no longer be a reason for terrorism. " , If terrorism is undetered by nuclear weapons would it be detered by justice ? , or thru the barrel of a gun as the reported USAF-IAF strike in Sep. against the Syrian nuclear installation . Keep also in mind that for your demand for justice , Iran refuse to respond to the charges made by the State of Argentina following a 14 years investigation of the Jewish Center bombing in Buenos Aeres on Jul. 18 , 1994 , And as if not enough , Iran flip the coin and defies Argentina' justice , Iran Prosecutors accused five Argentines with falsely implicating a group of Iranians in the 1994 terrorist bombing of the Buenos Aires Jewish center, ...
Quote " As long as the United States keeps giving money and weapons to Israel there is no reason why Israel will or should ever change . " , Do you really think that such a deal is for free ? , Do you really think that such a deal is for luuuuv ? , On the other hand if the Arab League is said to care about arabs (pal) , then how come Arab states provide less than 3 percent of the annual budget of UNRWA , the UN agency that assists Palestinian refugees throughout the Middle East. By contrast , Western countries cover some 95 percent of the organization's finances each year UNWAR budget . Now, if they really truly cared about the fate of their Palestinian brethren, would oil-rich countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain be so miserly and cheap when it comes to improving their living conditions... ? And if talking about improving their living conditions , then we see how the arab banking system also works thru the Egypt-Gaza tunnels , don't we? Don't we 'also' know about the billions upon billions of dollars given by EU and US to Abbas the Arafat terror living legacy ? , let alone the held PLO/PA tax revenues transfered by Olmert-Kadima to him , We also know about the US taxpayers dollars annually transferred by the US to islamic nations that want to see vaporised the Jewish State , Quote " America like Israel is a near bankrupt both financially and morally country who thinks they can get their way with the barrel of a gun." , Are you talking about the reported joint USAF-IAF strike in Sep. against the Syrian nuclear installation . Wich European intelligence sources claimed that in late 2004 Syria began developing a nuclear program near its border with Turkey. Syria's program, which was run by President Bashar Assad's brother Maher and defended by an Iranian Revolutionary Guards brigade, had by mid-2006 "reached the stage of medium activity." The web site of Kuwait's Al Seyassah's newspaper on Sept. 25, 2006. stated that the Syrian nuclear program was based "on equipment and materials that the sons of the deposed Iraqi leader, Uday and Qusai transferred to Syria by using dozens of civilian trucks and trains, before and after the US-British invasion in March 2003." The Syria's nuclear program was run by Iranians with assistance from Iraqi scientists and scientists from the Muslim republics of the former Soviet Union, "was originally built on the remains of the Iraqi program after it was wholly transferred to Syria." Would such info be an answer to you for my above question " Do you really think that such a deal is for free ? , Do you really think that such a deal is for luuuuv ? , " Quote " Israel must stop crying that they are always the victim when they really are the villan which is causing all this terrorism. " , Cale Hahn at IsraelNN.com said quote , " Today's script characterizes the bloodthirsty as peaceful, victims as aggressors and aggressors as victims, destroyers as allies, cowards as courageous, and the vile as virtuous. The universe cannot long suffer the flipping of Earth's moral magnetic poles. Tomorrow, the curtain of deception will be removed and the semantics of today's charlatans no longer be the tool behind which the savage maneuver. " end of quote .
Why would anyone make this statment in public and show the PA that we are weak? and give them ideas too!. If we say this," We mustn't allow ourselves to be blamed for the failure of the upcoming Middle East peace conference in Annapolis, because we didn't make enough concessions to the Palestinians"?
The Palestinians had a state alongside Israel--They refused to accept it and attacked Israel instead--You only have to look at the sequence of wars since 1948--The first war initiated by your Arabs, the 1956 Suez Blockade, the 1967 War initiated by Syria & Egypt, the sneak attack on Yom Kippur 1973--Place the blame on those that started the wars, your buddies-- Matter of fact, so you can get your information straight, all you have to do is GOOGLE "TIMELINES ISRAEL ARAB CONFLICT", Wikipedia, Answers.com & Concise Britannica all have neutral versions of the sequence of events--The West Bank occupation was a direct result of the 1967 war--
a greater threat to world security than Iranian Nukes--Imagine, a pistachio bomb--
You too have your name wrong, you mean "Coward" don't you--??
And, no, one does not have to be a weasel to use weasel words. Mr. Barak has been emphatic that there could be no concession which might lead to a break through at Annapolis. I must agree, given that the administration which called the meeting has evinced no effort to see it succeed - aside from the frantic and flatulent efforts of Condi Rice, who was sent upon a fools errand intended to destroy her by the neocons - must take the majority of blame for the Annapolis fiasco. But Mr. Barak wanted to see it fail just as badly as Dick Cheney and George Bush. And his attempt to reinvent his actions of the last 5 months are just weasel words. Anyone one know if a Weasel is Kosher?
Can somebody please explain to me why Barak has the right to the microphone? Did not the public vote him into the trash can of political history after his dismal failure at negotiating at Camp David? How can we be so stupid to allow him back into the government at all let alone be a main negotiator at Anapolis? He's proven to be a failure.
lISTEN, YOU SUBHUMAN, who is planting bombs in London, who is blowing up trains in Madrid, who are arrestyed for terrorist activities across Europe, who tried to kill the Pope, who are killing each other like cockroaches in Iraq? Bombs are exploding on the streets of every muslim country, Terrorists are being arrested in every country across the globe, where there is a muslim population, so who is the one who should be wiped out from the fave of this planet? Subhuman!
Sounds like Israel will not meet Abas demands for a deal, but lets see what happens, we sure dont want to wait another 10 years. There are rules and laws that each side have to abide by, the deal will not come on its own, US and EU will need to take a big part in this.
Are we witnessing the pangs of a guilty conscience, or what? The guilt can be laid squarely on Israel's settler enterprise throughout the past decade, for which the chickens are now coming home to roost, and the piper is at the door for his pay. Had Israel worked out an honest and equitable one-state solution with the Palestinians, Israeli presence in the West Bank and Gaza would never have been nor become a problem. But given the apartheid, the occupation, the Zionist fanaticism, it is obvious that Israel has been on a binge of having its own cake and eating it too, which inevitably leads to the upset stomach which Barak appears to be addressing here. Better to fix the problem now, rather than wait till it spawns total regional chaos and WWIII.
Just by going insinuates that you are willing to give in to the demands of the terrorists. DON'T GO!!!!! THEY NEED TO COME TO ANY MEETING WANTING PEACE...AND THEY DON'T WANT PEACE!!!! THEY JUST WANT ANOTHER PIECE OF ISRAEL...THAT'S THE PEACE THEY WANT: ISRAEL.
Palestinians have to agree to give up terror, recognize Israel within defensible borders, and give up their illegitimate claim to Jerusalem. Don't give in to pressure from your enemies!
Things are falling into place. Let's try and help them by doing the right thing on both sides of the divide.
Its hard to give back some of whats taken ,especially if there is mistrust. The time has come for both peoples to share in a just and equatable way.The world is watching , and will gaurrentee security and the moderation of the radicals.Do not fear peace but build on this oppurtunaty.Enough hate, shalom.
Israel continues to buy Iran's pistachios. Life sure is funny.
till you actually fail--try to succeed kind of disconcerting that folks are eyeing the exits before they even sit down
You mean ex-human, don't you?
As long as the United States keeps giving money and weapons to Israel there is no reason why Israel will or should ever change. America like Israel is a near bankrupt both financially and morally country who thinks they can get their way with the barrel of a gun. Israel must stop crying that they are always the victim when they really are the villan which is causing all this terrorism. Once there is justice, there will no longer be a reason for terrorism.
This Annapolis conference is meaningless. There have been no mentality breakthroughs that would miraculously give birth to a true peace process. The Arabs still view Israeli sovreignty over Jerusalem as an offence to Islam and they are nowhere near renouncing a culture of terrorism. Add to this that Abbas doesn't really represent the Palestians who prefer militant, masked leaders and the "holy" refugee issue and this all looks like a huge waste of time. But the media has whipped this up into something so that the hopes of the ignorant have been raised. And when they are inevitably dashed, as usual, the media will direct the torch carrying mob of public opinion that it has created and whose anger it has fueled, in Israel's direction. This whole thing is an Arab PR Broadway performance that Israel plays along with even though it has nothing to gain and is in fact the media's scripted villain.
THIS WILL NOT WORK! Olmert needs to pull out of the meeting. Signing this Annapolis conference agreement for a mutual Palestine and Israel state WILL release the apple seeds which fell out of the Apple that Eve and Adam bit (centuries ago). STOP the maddness! Go home, Olmert, stay away from liars!
it. He hasn't learned anything, every pal has outsmarted him.
Believe it or not, I think - upon rereading the response - that he is on Israel's side. Don't forget, most Lebanese have also been subjected to Palestinian duplicity and violent ways.
If the talks fail, hatred of Israel will increase. If the talks succeed, hatred of Israel will increase. If the talks are postponed, hatred of Israel will increase. If the talks continue without reaching an immediate end, hatred of Israel will increase.
My blood froze on hearing "...wipe them off the face of the earth but do something to end this" When I was a very yound child I saw left over fliers for trams in Lodz left after German occupation. Those were the one used by Nazis in public transport and officail offices. They compared Jews to cockroches and disease to be wiped out. The more poeple like you are repeating such horrifying options as solution the more will we Israelis and jews be very carefull what we concede. Our only insurance for survival as a Jewish nation is Israels existance. Your thoughts are a disgrace to Canadian values and any human in the world should beware of people like you.
If both the Israelis and Palestinians follow the rules of law, and not hire Philadelphia lawyers to misinterpret United Nations resolutions, there will be no failure at Annapolis. However, Barak's statement makes me concerned that he does not want Israel to follow the law.
Unfortunately, Antisemites and Islamist-Jihadists will always blame Israel no matter what Israel does. They do it until Israel is destroyed as their Manifesto clearly spells out. Hence, Israel should NOT be concerned one bit about the blame game. The dark forces have a latent agenda and that is to usurp Israel's liberated biblical and historic homeland of Judea and Samaria as a first step in achieving their goal of destroying the Jewish State. It is time Israel wakes up and NOT be fooled by the manipulations and arm twistings of the Antisemites and Islamist-Jihadists.
either make enough concessions or wipe them off the face of the earth, but do something to end this. when would you finally realize that they are the disease? "enough concessions" is the band-aid and the other solution is the cure.
The now stated purpose of the Annapolis meeting is now officially to launch talks between Israel and the Palestinians. The talks have already started. Ipso facto, the meeting is a success already. Everything else is gravy.
What happens when the summit fails?
Does anyone know of any aspect of Bush's Middle East policy that has turned out right yet? Lead by Condi Rice, the amateurs currently running US foreign policy have repeatedly proven themselves in over their heads. Besides, unless the Arab side matches Israeli concessions there will be no move towards peace. And if Abbas is as weak as they say, he won't deliver regardless of how sincere he may be.
Barak cares about blame more than results. Isn't he the one who conspired with Clinton to blame Yasser Arafat for the Failure of Camp Davit in 2000. Isn't he the one who knew before hand that the offer he made would definitely be a NO deal for the Palestinians. Barak is no more than a voice phenomenom without substance for a real leadership.
The political echelon in Israel is not as intelligent as it things it is, clearly. Intelligent leaders do not create their own problems in the first place.
