Police in Rehovot on Friday arrested an axe-wielding Palestinian who injured two passersby in the city by striking them with the weapon while chanting "God is great" in Arabic.

An initial investigation revealed that the Palestinian assailant, who is a resident of the West Bank town of Jenin, was seeking to avenge the death of a friend who was apparently killed during the Israel Defense Forces offensive in the Gaza Strip.

The Palestinian was expected to be transferred into custody of the Shin Bet security service for further questioning. Police are trying to determine how the Palestinian was able to reach Rehovot from Jenin.
