At least 37 fatalities as London rocked by series of blasts

Some 300 wounded; bombers target 1 bus, 3 tube stations; 'Al-Qaida in Europe' claims responsibility.

By Yossi Melman Haaretz Service, Agencies

LONDON - A series of explosions rocked London's public transportation system at rush hour on Thursday morning killing at least 37 people and wounding some 300.

Four blasts tore through packed underground trains and a bus in the capital's deadliest peacetime attack.

Police put the death toll at 37 by mid-afternoon, and French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy later quoted Britain's government as saying 50 people had been killed.

Three hundred people were also wounded in Thursday's bomb attacks in London, French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy quoted British Home Secretary Charles Clarke as telling him. "I've spoken to the British interior minister twice today, the last time half an hour ago. He told me that the provisional toll was 50 dead, 300 wounded, including 50 very seriously," Sarkozy said on France 2 television.

Metropolitan Police told journalists Thursday afternoon there were four separate attacks that took place between 8:51 A.M. and 9:47 A.M. GMT.

Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom has said he was unaware of any Israeli casualties though a number of Israelis have not yet made contact with family members.

The German weekly newspaper Der Spiegel reported that an organization calling itself Al-Qaida Europe claimed responsibility for the attacks.

There have also been reports of Al-Qaida warning Denmark and Italy that they would share the same fate as London if they do not cease their activities in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The editor of Jane's Intelligence Digest said Al-Qaida was very likely behind the attacks.

"We would put Al-Qaida at the top of the list of any suspects," Alex Standish said. "They have the motives, the means and the opportunity.

"Here you have a massive headline event [the G8 meeting now taking place in Scotland] which involves the three world leaders that Al-Qaida detests - Bush, Blair and Putin."

According to police, the first explosion took place at 8:51 A.M. GMT at the Aldgate East underground station, in which there were seven confirmed fatalities.

The second blast occurred at 8:56 A.M. at the King's Cross underground station. There were 21 confirmed fatalities in this explosion.

The third explosion took place at 9:17 A.M. at Edgware Road station, and three trains are believed to have been involved in the incident. There were five confirmed fatalities in this blast.

At 9:47 A.M. a fourth explosion took place near Tavistock Square on board a double-decker bus. The number of fatalities in this last incident was still unconfirmed.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair said it is "reasonably clear" the series of attacks was orchestrated by terrorists. Speaking from the G8 summit in Gleneagles in Scotland Blair said he intended to make his way to London immediately. The G8 proceedings were postponed until Friday.

Blair added that the determination of the British people to defend their values and way of life is greater than that of terrorist determination to wreak destruction and death.

President Moshe Katsav on Thursday evening sent a message of condolence to Queen Elizabeth II, Israel Radio reported. In the message, he called on the nations of the world to join together in a war against those who carry out terrorist acts.

The European Union's commissioner for justice and security affairs said the blasts that hit London's underground and bus services on Thursday were terrorist attacks.

The UN Security Council called an emergency meeting for Thursday to condemn the deadly blasts in London, the council's president said.

U.S. President George W. Bush, speaking at the G8 summit, told reporters that "the war on terror goes on."

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that the London bomb blasts showed that the world was not doing enough to beat terrorism.

The bombings came just a day after a jubilant London was awarded the 2012 Olympic Games.

Italy's interior minister said all of Europe was on alert. Security was also boosted on public transportation around the U.S.

The Palestinian Authority condemned the London attacks, Israel Radio reported.

The Islamic Human Rights Commission warned London Muslims to stay at home to avoid any violence aimed at them.

'The double-decker bus was in the air'The entire London underground system was shut down following explosions in three tube stations, which occurred one day after London was awarded the 2012 Olympics and as leaders of the Group of Eight rich nations met in Scotland.

People were seen streaming out of one underground station covered with blood and soot. Passengers were evacuated from stations across the capital, many in shock and with their clothes ripped to shreds, witnesses said.

Major thoroughfares were blocked off by police and ambulance services.

A witness said the top of one double-decker bus in the center of London was reportedly destroyed by a blast.

"I was on the bus in front and heard an incredible bang, I turned round and half the double-decker bus was in the air," Belinda Seabrook told Press Association, the British news agency.

She said the bus was packed with people.

"It was a massive explosion and there were papers and half a bus flying through the air," she said.

"There were people streaming out of Aldgate station covered in blood," said Kate Heywood, 27, on her way to work.

"There are shards of glass there, it is chaos," she added.

Police sealed off large areas around other underground and mainline rail stations. Firemen donned chemical protection suits before rushing into stations.

Veronika, let's agree, that the disputes between the westies and the osties can only be resolved by those who are in the middle, be haAretz. As long as either westies or the osties can't see that they seem to be confined to be punching each other below the belt line. Also as long as we, mihaAretz, who are completely in the mentality or way of life of either the westies or the osties, we are unsuited to be the judges between the east and the west, so we get the punches from both.

because the great democratic powers did not react when the terrorists started to engage in terror, this became possible. The arab countries should have been made aware that if they will finance and help terror they will be bombed out of existence. Now it is to late.

Hilary's post which mentioned the variety of voices which goes to make up any culture was surely written by a dewy eyed thirteen year old girl who has just come home from school. "This is what teacher said so it must be right". Variety of voices in the Muslim community?? Complexity and variety of human culture?? My ears hear not a single whisper of pity for Israel's victims of terror in the entire Muslim commnity of London. However I do admit there is always great concern amongst Londons Muslim leaders to diminish the reaction against their congregation's acts of violence. Hillary's posting is a prime example of political correct naivity at it's best

    Where is this Arabic journalist?

By the way, where is this strange Katarian (?) journalist, that usually has nothing to do except to dispute in talk-backs. Normally he just lives in this dialogue windows. But where is he now? Isn't he a coward that doesn't know what to do? Of course, he tries to show himself just, moderate, tolerant etc. etc. muslim. To the "western" readers. And this situation creates a problem to him. He cannot openly support the terorist, because it would be the revelation about his true face for the Westies. But he also cannot protest against the terorists, because it is not his image in the Arabic world, among the Osties. And what do we see? A usually I'll-better-die-than-keep-silent hides somewhere, because so many of his beautiful words have turned into sh...t today. And his behaviour is very typical. There are so many so called islamic "thinkers", or "moderate", or "liberal" etc. (in Europe, at least), who behave today in the same way. Too ready to talk, when it costs nothing, when you can critisize Israel in the web-site of Haaretz (what a brave heart!). And too coward to say what do they really think, when it becomes really hot. Disgusting!

Poor Europeans in thier hatred toward the US and especially toward Israel they still do not understand what it is all about. Naive Germans feel themselves safe: they are not in Iraq! Madrid and London are parts of the EU? Who cares? Germany is not in Iraq! Naive idiots! They still believe Bin Laden is interested in Iraq! It's terrible, but when it will come, to France, to Germany, to any other EU country, the Europeans will be very surprised. Again. Just like people in London: "How could it happened? We love our muslims, we are so tolerant, we even hate Jews, we do everything to please the moslem world! What has happened today, was impossible!" Remember the bus blown up in Israel, that Israeli activists had brought to Haag to protest against the "Fence-trial"? This bus in London is such a sad and extremely expressive symbol of the poor stupid Europe.

    'Terrorist attacks'? What terrorist attacks?
    • ben morris

What really happened in London? No sooner than the British capital was rocked by horrific bomb blasts, the BBC came out with headlines like "London Rocked by Terror Attacks" and questions like "Did you witness the terrorist attacks?" and statements like "Police suspects terrorists behind the attack". This may seem quite unremarkable, if not for the remarkable use of the word "terrorist" that seems to apply in Britain but not elsewhere. For example, in a perfect show of double standard, here is the BBC 'timeline' of very similar bombings in Israel of attacks against Israel, which nowhere refers by name to terror, terrorism or terrorists. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/1197051.stm). Interestingly enough, the BBC 'edtorial guidelines' (applicable only in certain parts of the world so it seems) say this: "The word "terrorist" itself can be a barrier rather than an aid to understanding. We should try to avoid the term, without attribution. We should let other people characterise while we report the facts as we know them." So, what really happened in London?

What stupid audacity to say such things! 40 innocent people were killed, and 300, also free of blame for anything, were wounded, many in unspeakable pain. None of all 340 had anything whatsoever to do with Israel. What the writer of that letter is saying amounts to, "Just say that you couldn't help yourself because you had Israel on your mind, and then anything is all right." In other words you can shape morality to your pleasure. How about if I go kill some unoffending man and say, "I couldn't help it. the Arabs made me so mad I had to do it." Among sensible people with any grasp of morality that kind of defense wouldn't fly. That writer is so debased he should seek help to become a normal, moral person.

Diego asked "How can you judge an entire religion for the acts of fanatics?" I would concede that you can't judge an entire religion by the actions of fanatics, but you CAN judge an entire religion by their REACTION towards their extremists. Where are the real protests in the Islamic world to their fanatic brethren. I'm not talking about verbal condemnations by leaders - but rather collectives of Muslims rallying and saying clearly "This is wrong!" and actually DOING SOMETHING about it. I don't see it and THIS you can judge a religion for.

I feel ashamed that another Londoner should spread such simplistic, selectively unrepresentative, and negatively stereotypical images of muslim jubilation at terrorist attacks. Incitement of racial hatred is a crime in Britain and such comments are calculated to provoke such responses. I would like to read on here other reports about or from the Muslim community giving a more balanced picture of the variety of voices that goes to make up any culture - whether it be Muslim, Jewish, Christian etc. People who refer to any religion such negatively simplistic collective terms lack the ability or mental capacity to appreciate the complexity and variety of our human cultures.

Will Al Kaida get what it wants? A carefully worked out strategy by that (small time) "grandmaster" of chess Bin Laden has laid out a plan to destroy nations economies and provoke massive responses from those he has chosen to attack. He has worked out in his tiny mind, we are doomed if we respond and we are doomed if we don't. IE its heads you lose, tails we win. As far as dear old England is concerned There are so many Moslems here that any meaningful response is impossible. We have a wonderful tradition of laisser- faire and left wing politicians such as Ken Livingstone to thank for awful situation we are in. Next stop for the no 88 bus from London Bridge, blow me down if its not Mecca. ALL CHANGE!!

How do we rationalize the irational. The sad simple fact is rationality is a whore it will and damn near anything can be rationalized. Take a look at anti-judaism and the sudo science of the later 19th centry "Race Science" and how it quickend anti-judaism and renamed it anti-Semitism. How does this posting say anything about london? Simply this so long as you have anyone person who feels that he/she has a reason to A,B,C.... then he/she will react in such a way as to effect change, or with most terror attacks lash out at those they feel are to blame. Question then becomes, how do we respond? after all even Stalin could not keep out all decension in the FSU. Ones religion is a choice that is not necessarly at fault for these acts, a caveat here is that one way to rationalize the irrational is through the supposed words of g-d. I wish that i could answer the ultimate question, how to fight terror. The reality is that it is far too dynamic. Like rats we cant kick those we suspect of terror out of our countries. Like a Hydra we can not kill all that we fear, for each down an unknown number raises up. I would hazord a guess that there is no rational answer to terrorizm.

As a veteran eastender I have lived for several years amongst an almost exclusively Muslim population of Bangladeshis in the London area of Tower Hamlets. After 9/11 I saw groups of Bangladeshi youth spontaneously rejoicing, letting off fireworks and playing loud dance music and laughing raucously. Today, I visisted hang-out areas and saw scenes of jubilation. Although these Muslim youth are growing up in London they don't feel much for the UK, they grow up with so much hatred against the English Christians in their heart. They are constantly being told by their imams that the UK is immoral, evil, anti-muslim, racist and that it is their Islamic duty to fight the Christians in the spirit of Jihad. Just my narrow insight.

Because time and time again, their heinous actions: Murdering of innocent civilians, in countries that allow them to practice their religion and afford them "civilized" opportunities, should by now cause some sort of worldwide indignation and backlash, that says to them: You will never succeed...we (the world) see that your intentions are to create disharmony in the world, NOT harmony; and your inherent bloodthirsty methods are in direct opposition to what the world would justify or condone...And shows that you are Universal OUTLAWS! And you will fail miserably in your attempted goals, to the detriment of your fellow Muslims. STOP now, it is useless to continue in this manner! These attacks occur because the world is expedient towards the Moslem World. Many Moslem immigrants leave their countries of origin for pastures anew in the West. They bring their baggage of frustration with them. Many fail to "make it" in the West and vent their frustrations on their adopted countries. Israel had been suffering from terrorist attacks for many years whether it is suicide bombings of innocent people, strategically placed homemade pipe bombs and so on. The reaction of the West while condemning these vile acts of terror against innocent people had also been apologetic towards the "poor frustrated Palestinians" under Israeli occupation. They all tried to find a psychological reason for suicide attacks and perhaps justify these attacks in a back handed way, blaming the "occupation" and its ramifications. They never realized that this attitude would boomerang onto them as well. Many of countries who had been easy on Moslem immigration en masse are now reaping the fruits of their tolerance, as many mosques had become havens for terrorist activity. No country is immune from Islamist terror today. The West in its hunger for oil and fear of the oil weapon being used against them had a laisez faire immigration policy toward Arab immigration. Can a "valid psychological reason" be found for these cruel attacks that occurred in London?

All in the name of their false idol Allah, the moon god.
