Assad: Israel leading the Middle East to war

Israel 'planting the seeds of war in the region,' warns Syrian foreign minister Walid Moallem.

By Haaretz Service and Jack Khoury Tags: Ehud Barak Israel news

Syrian President Bashar Assad said on Wednesday that Israel is not serious about its intentions to make peace with Damascus as evidenced by "its conduct which is leading the region to war."

The Syrian leader made the statements during a meeting with Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Moratinos in Damascus on Wednesday.

Netanyahu's bureau said in response that Israel seeks peace negotiations with Syria, but Damascus has thwarted every effort to start the process.

"Unfortunately Syria is heaping obstacles and preventing negotiations and the formulation of understandings that could bring peace, security and prosperity to all sides," a bureau spokesperson said.

"The statements by the senior Syrian leadership are most regrettable; in reality, the complete opposite is true. The prime minister has said many times the he would be willing to travel to any place in the world, at any time, in order to open peace negotiations with Syria without preconditions."

Earlier on Wednesday, Assad's foreign minister issued a strongly-worded warning to Israel that a future war between the two countries would be a "comprehensive" clash that would "come to your cities," CBS News reported.

Just days after Defense Minister Ehud Barak cautioned that the stalled peace process with Syria is liable to deteriorate into all-out war, Foreign Minister Walid Moallem lashed out at Jerusalem.

"Israel is indeed planting the seeds of war in the region, I would tell them stop playing the role of thugs in the Middle East," Moallem told reporters Tuesday in Damascus.

"One day you threaten Gaza, next day you threaten Lebanon, later Iran and now Syria," Moallem told a joint news conference with Moratinos.

"Don't test, you Israelis, the determination of Syria. You know that war this time would move to your cities. Come to your senses and choose the road of peace. This path is clear," Moallem warned.

"No doubt, if we assume that this war would erupt - and we should not exclude this possibility from an entity established on expansion - I would say it is going to be a comprehensive war, whether it starts in the south of Lebanon or from Syria," Moallem said.

According to CBS News, Moratinos said during the news conference that he had left Israel with the impression that the country was in no mood for conflict.

"I came in from Israel after meetings with most senior officials there, and I would tell you that I heard no drums of war, rather I felt a desire for peace," the Spanish foreign minister said.

Moallem: U.S. requests accreditation for new envoy

The United States has issued a formal request to accredit a new American ambassador to Damascus, Moallem told reporters on Wednesday.

Robert Ford, the envoy to be, will be the first U.S. ambassador to Damascus since the Bush administration called back its envoy as a response to the assassination of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in February of 2005.

"The United States has nominated an ambassador. This is an American sovereign issue and it is Syria's right to study the nomination," Moallem told reporters in Damascus.

Of the thousands of rockets fired by hamas and hezbolla, how many were aimed at military targets? How many suicide bombers targeted military targets? I know what your answer will be. [you see, I know how you think]. You will say that all of Israel is a military target. So the next time Israel bombs anything, remember my words. Israel only bombs military targets.

As you know, Israel targetted terrorist bases in Beirut and elsewhere that were being used to fire missiles into Israel. That is the definition of self-defence and is 100% legal under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. The Syrian Foreign Minister did not threaten to attack Israeli military bases, he threatened to attack "cities". That is beyond reasonable doubt a war crime as well as an act of illegal aggression which would entitle Israel to use as much force as necessary to defeat the aggressor. Don't cry to the UN Human Right Council when your next war blows up in your face.

It is really sad reading these comments. The main message seems to be that Israel is always right, everybody else is wrong and if they do not like it Israel will kick the shit out of them as they have done before. Has anybody a constructive suggestion? I would really hate to be your neighbours.

What is clearly happening here is Syria is asking Israel for another beating. 1948, 1967, and 1973 were clearly not enough for these people. They talk of the region going to war as if Egypt and Jordan hadn't already learned their lessons and signed peace accords. Israels message to Damascus should be clear. Cut the foolishness, rhetoric, and stupid policies regarding the Golan Heights. You lost your right to that land the second you put cannons on it. Peace is the way of the future. Peace can also be achieved by beating one's opponent into sumission. With Syria, that is easy.

Israel has NOT threatened to wipe any nation or group of people off the face of the earth, yet ALL of their muslum enimies have said that Israel must be destroyed. Look at history...every war Israel has fought was a defensive one. Israel has WON every one of them against all odds. The God of Israel neither slumbers or sleeps. If the awesome IDF does not destroy Israel's emimies...our God WILL!!!!!!!

The various and many members of the Netanyahu Cabinet have been talking up a war. Some want a war with Hamas. Others want a war with Lebanon. Most want a war with Iran. And some want a war with Syria. The one thing that is absolutely certain is that the Netanyahu government is united upon one premise. A war is necessary to preserve their rule over Israel. So a war it will be. With whom is the only question.

The only reason there may be a war in the region is if Syria senses Israeli weakness. Or worse, if hezbollah senses weakness. Syria arms hezbollah; and Syria should know the cost of a war or their choosing.

1400 casualities in 3 weeks of open combat in a high density zone. What it means? A genocide? Deffinatly not, a combat in a place like that would take 1400 lifes each day. What conclusion we get from it? Israel didnt use all its power since 73. A join attack from Syria, lebanon and pals wouldnt be a preemptive atack to neutraliza an enemy, but a hostile act with the goal of erradicate the enemy. In that situation, you really think the US would be able to hold israel in the collar it use to hold? Hundred, even thousand of israelis would die in such comflict, but it would be the end for its enemies.

I believe that the statement does make good sence. Imagine a war starts against Syria, consequences is that HEZB, Hamas, Syria would send thousands of missiles in all directions. Israel will retaliate, of course, with N W but it would probably be too late for the death of many thousands Israelis and millions of Arabs. I also believe that the FM is right it is better to move for Peace than WARS.

The US doesn't have the money nor troops for a regional war in the Middle East. Syria and Iran have a mutual defense agreement because after Iraq, both countries know either one is next on the Israel's war agenda. Israel has less than a decade of hegemony left, hence the urgency to attack now. It's already too late and time for plan B - peace agreements!

The real prize in the Golan Heights for Israel is water. Headwaters of the Jordan River supplies 30% of the Israel's water supply. Add to that the ski area on Mt.Hebron and Golan Heights Winery, facts an Aspenite should appreciate, and you find that the Golan Heights is more than "minimal" value to either side.

As you know, there are no missiles firing on any Syrian citizens. Article 51 of the United Nations Charter allows the right of self-defence only in cases where a country is under attack as Israel has been for the last sixty two years. A regime like Syria which is not under attack and does not recognise its neighbour's right to exist has no possible claim under international law for the right of self-defence.
