Argentina ex-president charged with obstructing Jewish center bombing probe

By Haaretz Service Tags: Israel newsFormer Argentine President Carlos Menem has been charged with obstructing the investigation into the 1994 bombing attack on the Israelite Mutual Association building in Buenos Aires, the French news agency AFP reported Thursday.
During the attack on the Jewish center, 85 people were killed and 300 were wounded.
Menem, 79, served as president of Argentina between 1989 and 1999. In March he attended a court hearing over his alleged involvement in the obstruction of the investigation, but refused to cooperate with the investigators.
Menem has also been indicted for selling weapons to Croatia and Ecuador in the 1990s, when both countries were involved in wars.
Eighteen months ago, the Argentine prosecution sought an arrest warrant against Menem over his interference in the investigation into the attack on the Jewish center building. At the time, Argentine prosecutor Alberto Nisman also requested that Menem's immunity be revoked.
The prosecution had also requested arrest warrants for five people who served under Menem during his presidency. "We have uncovered a plan that was implemented on the highest political level in the 90s - to cover up and give immunity to one of the people who, as it turns out, was one of the main suspects in the local conspiracy," said Nisman, noting that the cover-up included a complete cessation of the investigation.

Jews have a country and don't have anythging to do in Argentina or in Colorado or in any place outside their own country: Israel. Argentina doesn't have to protect Jews who are foreigners there and they do not have to investigate this bombing which is part of a war in which they are not a party. David, The answers are in the article. Menem was extremely corrupt. I really don't think he's an antisemitic. He had strong ties with many powerful Jews (many of them as corrupt as himself, and despised by the Argentinean Jewish community) Rumors were that the deal was only to ignore all kind of intelligence reports, and instruct the police and other organizations to do so. These rumors go back to at least 10 years ago. There was even talk about the 10 million fee. As an Argentinean, I'm really surprised that even after so much time, the investigation is going on. About what Hanz Schultz mentions, that he's just an 80 year old, let me tell you something: He's completely lucid, healthy and young looking. Being 80 y/o today is not the same as before. Justice and punishment of the powerful is rare in Argentina. This would be a very positive step.
