Arafat aide calls on Chirac to reveal truth about Arafat's death

Ex-aide to Palestinian leader says former French president responsible for covering up Israeli complicity.

By AP

Former French President Jacques Chirac knows what killed Yasser Arafat and should make it public, an ex-Arafat aide said Saturday, reiterating that he believes his boss was poisoned by Israel.

Arafat died Nov. 11, 2004, after being treated in a French military hospital.

French doctors who treated Arafat said he died of a massive stroke after suffering intestinal inflammation, jaundice and a blood condition known as disseminated intravascular coagulation, or DIC.

However, the records were inconclusive about what brought about DIC, which has numerous causes ranging from infections to colitis to liver disease.

Bassam Abu Sharif, a former Arafat aide, told reporters Saturday - on what would have been Arafat's 78th birthday - that Chirac and Arafat's French doctors know the real cause of death but decided to withhold it from the public for fear of further destabilizing the Middle East.

Abu Sharif said he believes Israel killed Arafat with a substance that destroys red blood cells. Asked for proof, he said he would reveal his sources if Chirac publicly denies his allegations.

Israel has vehemently denied involvement in Arafat's death.

Abu Sharif spoke several days after a senior Hamas leader in Gaza, Mahmoud Zahar, alleged that Arafat was killed in a conspiracy between Israel and Palestinians close to Arafat.

accepted to go for treatment, when I know that the result will BE DEATH SHORTLY.No sence whatsoever. Do not forget that he could summoned the best DOCTORS from the world(with the kind of money he had). Would these eminent DOCTORS THEN advised him to go to EUROPE to have AIDS Treatments?or would they allowed him to died peacefully ? Would His WIFE accepted that He received treatments for AIDS? That the man was POISONED was more than likely, it was a certainty, that's why his assisstant want the T R U T H S to come out.

Jake I was referring to the many Israeli talkback comments that claim Arafat died of AIDS. For my reasoning, this is a ridiculous and unfounded claim, and it only reflects their image of the Arab as violent, sexually-driven, dirty; not very different from the sexual conotations against blacks in America and Jews in Europe not so long ago. Read David Shipperman's " arab and jew" for a good treatment on this. Your comment that no one will ever know the truth is fair but unfortunate. It doesnt have to be that way. And I am not slandering - it was official Israeli policy for a couple of years that Arafat should be liquidated. The government sanctioned this publicly.

The hints to Arafats homosexual tendencies can be found in many various intelligence agencies books, making the case this is just not Israeli propaganda. The picture of a relationship with Suha his wife, she bieng 27,Arafat 61 is repulsive,by French law a autopsy could not be done unless she agreed to it or his medical records released. It is a fact he was born in Cairo-Eygpt in 1929 years before there was any kind of Palestinian refugees or a people so called.

I already read this rumors about Arafat's would be death by AIDS. You can be quite skeptical. AIDS is a long lasting desease that cannot be hidden. It takes at least two or three years (when not cured at all) before you die, and it shows. No one noticed such a thing on Arafat's aspect, and there were no rumour at all BEFORE Arafat's death. All began after, on Israeli siede. It is therefore very likely that this rumor is an Israeli invention to do harm to his prestige amongst Palestinians, and to suggest he was homosexual. But sorry, this is not based on any serious argument. Arafat like every important political fighter was 100% devoted to a cause and did not have a lot of time to waiste for his private life. He married and had a girl. The rest sounds like a mere forgery.

Here's my definition of that word:someone who thinks that the presence of a jewish state(for me this is an oxymoron to begin with) justifies all conduct, simply because it is a jewish state. And Haaretz does not fall into that category.En passant,it is because of H. and other posters such as Ben Alofs,Tosefta and others that the international community is willing to even look in the direction of israel.

    Speed of death from AIDS
    • Slibovitz
    • 05.08.07
    • 10:19

AIDS can kill very quickly. Yes, the virus often lays latent for years before something catastrohic happens. In most Western societies, people have seen previously healthy people suddenly get sick and drop dead from AIDS. Think Easy-E of the rap group NWA. Also think of all those homosexual young men in LA that suddenly died in 1981 who had no previous health problems and whose deaths alerted the world to the emergence of a horrifying new disease. As far as Arafat's access to the best health care, he may have been under treatment for HIV or even refused to acknowlege that he had the disease for fear of loss of his stature. Ultimately it does not matter, even under treatment, most HIV patients die of their disease. Many HIV patients are able to lead healthy lives for years on treatment. Others do not. Dying of AIDS is not a crime. On the other hand, Arafat was a criminal regardless of the circumstances of his death.

Anyone who knows people who died from AIDs could see Arafat's symptoms were the same. Dementia complex, loss of ability to reason, loss of memory, inability to concentrate, listlessness, and unsteadiness in walking.

Arafat had AIDs, he had sex with men, he stole billions of dollars, he lavished much of it on Suha and his men and boy friends and obviously only paid lip service to the great "resistance" - I think he's laughing in his grave at your naivete.

When his eyes were bugging out of his rapidly thinning skull, his lips quivering, a look of utter confusion on his 76 year-old, guant face... all I could think was, "Wow, this guy looks really healthy!" Who the heck is Abu Sharif kidding? Arafat was in TERRIBLE health by 2004. He didn't die "suddenly"... his body (and MIND) were deteriorating rapidly during the last years of life, especially after the outbreak of the so-called "Al Aqsa Intifadah" and the added stress this caused for him. Indeed, foreign diplomats after the year 2000 repeatedly commented on his degenerating appearance (and increasingly erratic behavior & verbal outbursts). And as many people in this forum have already noted, Arafat may have contracted AIDS. This would easily explain the multiple symptoms appearing almost simultaneously, as his immune system collapsed. The real reason that Arafat's cause-of-death is a "secret" is because very few Arabs can handle the truth about their flawed, embezzling hero.

No sir, I am not and never was your peoples' enemy; but Yasser Arafat was. Look back. Examine. Look at the achievements for the Palestinian people. What has occurred other than too much death; the wasting of billions of dollars; promises made and never kept and a general legacy of terrible internecine fighting because so far no-one, including Arafat, has been able to put the interests of your people above their own and that's why you have no state; no country; no legal status and so little hope after all these years. No sir, you are your own worst enemy because you allowed yourself to be led not by a visionary but by a vicious killer. Sixty years and still, nothing. It is no longer everyone else's fault. It's YOU that needs to change.

Does anyone actually believe Chirac or the French government would be withholding any information to protect Israel? Just the opposite. Chirac must have been paid richly by interested arabs to conceal that arafat died of AIDS - muslims tend to be terribly homophobic and would be devistated to learn their great leader was pleasuring himself with little boys. Then again, arabs have historically been very good at lying about history - they would probably find a lie out of this truth as well -like Israel poisoned him?

"trying to villify demonise Palestinians is self-serving and self-reinforcing racism. This reminds me of how the Jews were stereotyped in Europe. The most revolting aspect of Israel`s strategy for oppressing the Palestinians is it mirrors actions taken to persecute Jews in Europe last century; which Israelis then use as justification for their own actions. Sick!" Forgive me for noticing, but the article says it is the Palestinian Authority which is slandering Israel by accusing it of poisoning their beloved Arafat. Your response shows only that it is guilty-feeling people in Europe itself who are trying to abdicate responsiblity for the Holocaust by displacing it onto Israel and claiming "Israel is doing the same things to the Palestinians". Very transparent indeed.

The only reason it matters whether Arafat was poisoned or not is that his death has heightened the split in Palestinian support (Hamas/Fatah) and ironically has allowed Hamas to take the upper hand much to the chigrin of the Israeli government. He seemed to be able to keep it together (corruption?) You only have to look at the huge increase in public support from the West for Abbas , cutting out funding for Gaza, ignoring the election results etc. as examples of the west trying to control this rise of Hamas. Abbas is a western puppet. The manipulation by the West is the real issue here, not how he died.

Trying to vilify and demonise Palestinian leaders, as is done by several people in this feedback section, is self-serving and self-reinforcing racism and prejudice. Ken Shipperman’s in his excellent book “Arab and Jew” noted the similarity with how the Jews were stereotyped in Europe, and Blacks in America. Now the image of Arabs as filthy, sex-craven, contaminated is propagated; (though everyone knows you don’t die of AIDS so quickly anymore; certainly not if you are a President and have access to the best medicine in the world.) Ironically, having been subjected to similar racist biases and prejudices is one reason Zionists use to justify the creation of a Jewish state. Apparently this was not a solution, rather it perpetuates a cycle.

The Palestinian people's plight today is due to Arafat's exploitation of the fact that a liberation movement could be turned into a money-machine. This simple Egyptian boy died with six billion dollars carefully hidden away in a Swiss bank, while his people lived on charity. He didn't make cars or pump oil. He didn't invent a new IT system but he did exploit a whole people, which he had to invent first. He gave a new meaning to the word 'corruption.'

The sad part is that a people dispossessed will follow anyone who they think will help them, and Arafat was able to manipulate their frustrations better than others. Sadly, he also set up a culture of corruption and the mechanisms to conduct it which still exist to the detriment of the Palestinian people. Give the Pals back their land and they'll elect better leaders as the society evolves from the tragedies of the past,

my theory is that he suffocated while rolling around in the billions of aid money sent to ease his people's "suffering".

I appreciate that most Israeli Jews may have their own genuine concerns about Palestinian claims for nationhood but trying to villify demonise Palestinians is self-serving and self-reinforcing racism. This reminds me of how the Jews were stereotyped in Europe. The most revolting aspect of Israel's strategy for oppressing the Palestinians is it mirrors actions taken to persecute Jews in Europe last century; which Israelis then use as justification for their own actions. Sick!

If he was poisoned, Suha must be to blame. She was with him all the time in hospital, did not allow anyone to visit and used to give him chocolates.

Brant brings up a good point that Chirac should have considered before he concocted this reason for not sharing what he knows about Arafat's death. None of the possible explanations of Arafat's death should be antithetical to Palestinian "national" interests. If he had AIDS the Palestinians would certainly want to know. If he was poisoned, by whomever, they would also want to know. It is an insult to them to imply that they would engage in further bloodshed if they knew the cause of his death.

They are afraid to reveal this information because of the deeply homophobic society of the Palis and Arabs in general. So Arafat was gay, what's the big deal? A gay terrorist is still a terrorist!

    PROTECTING WHOM???

The quite unpleasant death of this terrorist degenerate, who lied about his birth (Egypt; not Palestine) who bowed to Mecca when the cameras were rolling but lied and cheated and caroused and broke all the simplest tenets of Islam the rest of the time and, who stole his peoples' money and future, should indeed be of interest to Chirac; perhaps the one "leader" on earth who did more to prop up this evil and calculating despot than anyone else. It would not be "protecting Palestinian interests" to announce (were it true) that he was poisoned by Israel). No, Chirac is much more likely protecting information that either shows the extent Arafat's sexual degradation or, much more likely, the hand of Meshaal, or Kaddoumi or a host of these delightful "freedom fighters" wrongly loved and respected for far too long by way to many gullible westerners like Chirac and, it would appear, about half the people who read Haaretz.

Arafat and his lovely wife lived apart and slept apart. "Palestine was his wife", so he said. Arafat was a homosexual. However, if his blood count was off...He died of AIDS or Cancer. If it was cancer there wouldn't be the shame or speculation....Therefore.....He died of AIDS. I can only wonder who gave it to him? Abbas?

I guess HIV is also called "poison" now? Interesting how Chirac and the others would rather the average Arab believe the lie that Arafat was poisoned by Jews and not tell the truth that he died from AIDs. Are they afraid the extremely homophobic Arabs would riot and murder upon discovering their precious leader liked boys? Yes, because as every Arab knows, there is NO homosexuality in the morally upstanding Arab world ... Hey Chirac ... respect the Arabs enough to tell them the truth. Tell them how he died - especially now since we all know if it were the Jews, you'd be announcing that from loudspeakers in the Square so it must be AIDs. And while we're at it, lets all hear how much money he stole from his own people. Let the Palestinians know who's responsible for the wasted decades of misery thanks to this scoundrel.

As far as political motives are concerned, nobody in Palestinians top leadership that wanted him death more than Mohammad Dahlan. The whole truth about is going to be revealed sooner rather than later. Dahlan is wrong if he think is going to get away with the crimes. Abbas knew that, Shaul Mofaz knew that, as much as Ariel Sharon knew about this conspirasy to kill ABU AMMAR.
