Arab League chief: More UN, less U.S. in Mideast peace bids

Moussa: There should be change in peace process, by having mediator who understands needs of both sides.

By Reuters Tags: Israel news Middle East peace Arab League

CAIRO - The United Nations must play a bigger role in trying to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the United States should not be the only mediator, according to the head of the Arab League.

Amr Moussa told Reuters, without directly criticising U.S. policy in the Middle East, that any mediator must be objective.

"There should be a change in the direction of the peace process, by having a mediator who understands the needs of the two parties, and not one party," he said.

"The United Nations role which was marginalised at a certain stage with regards to the Arab-Israeli struggle should be brought back," he added.

The United Nations is part of a Quartet of mediators alongside the U.S., European Union and Russia, but the United States has taken a leading role in the peace process.

U.S. President Barack Obama's Middle East envoy George Mitchell is expected to visit the region in January for a fresh push to resume the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks stalled since the three-week Gaza conflict a year ago. Months of Mitchell's shuttling between the sides yielded no concrete signs of progress in 2009.

Hints of movement in the deadlocked talks have emerged in discussions between the leaders of Egypt and Israel this week, Israeli and Palestinian officials said Wednesday.

Neither side has divulged the details of what development may take place though both are cautiously optimistic that talks could resume sometime in 2010.

Moussa told Reuters on Tuesday that he trusted Obama, but added: "We must maintain the American role in the framework of other roles, European and United Nations and all countries that have links to and interests in the situation in the Middle East."

Moussa, who was Egypt's foreign minister between 1991 and 2001, won praise from many Egyptians and Arabs for his criticism of both Israel and past U.S. Middle East policies.

The laughable UN? Not even for a contest for judging the largest fish caught. In other words: NO NO NO NO NO NO NO and something else, NO! Why wouldn't Israel just throw itself off the edge of the world, that'll do the same as any decision from the UN

The UN cannot be trusted to maintain the integrity of their own forces. Let alone make the difficult choices that have long term successes, instead relying on the quick and easy solutions that prolong conflict and resolve nothing. Shall we begin to list the corruption and lack of accountability for their forces, the cover ups from highest levels and involvement in human trafficking where ever UN forces are stationed. We only need to stone wall the Arabs until their oil reserves are tapped, then no has to listen to their bigoted propaganda.

The US had proven itself again and again as a devout friend and "protector" of Israel. It is certainly not a fair and unprejudiced mediator. The US likes to monopolize the so called peace process so as to maintain control on the decisions and to continuously and eagerly fend off any criticism of Israel. Enough is enough. The USA had proven to be the enemy of the Palestininas and the interest of the Arab populous. Something the Arabs nor the Palestinians had chosen .

Thanks for the request to reply. Is it not true that Israel has started wars with each of it's neighbors - Syria, Jordan, Lebanon y Egypt? Is it not true that after each of these wars, Israel took land from them? This is LAND THEFT. As far as taking of lands through war, regardless of who "won", it remains land theft, so please do not say it was the right of the victor. As for war atrocracies - I certainly can point to US and Russia as having committed larger, by numbers killed, but no country has a continuous record of atocracies over an extended period since WW II than Israel. As a Mexican, we do not understand the claims of starving, destroying homes and killign of civilians people by the thousands each year and say you are moral people. sorry for my bad English... JG

Arabs reject Jewish Israel but demand Israel concessions anyways

Palestinians and other Arabs and Muslims should understand very clearly that there is no peace acceptable to the Jews that doesn't leave Israel as a Jewish majority country. The possibility does not exist. So, for Arabs to wait for Israel to make concessions while they reject a Jewish Israel is ludicrous. The Arabs want the UN because they expect the UN to force more concessions on Israel than the US without having to make peace. The Arab attempt at manipulation is transparent and will not work.

Palestanian land for any country is being eatten up-or at least the most desirable areas. When the offer was sweet under Clinton years, it was turned down by Arafat. Now with more Israels killed in auto accidents in one weekend, these Jim Crow laws need to be eradicated in the West Bank. Just like the Palestanians need to face reality, time for the Israels to face their ugly truth that it cannot remain this way forever either. You got the land. You got the people too. Come clean. Stop defending what you cannot defend with a straight face anymore. There is no pretty wrapping paper. And comparing yourself to others who stink more sounds desperate. This needs to be the new American position.....This applies to the West Bank and not Gaza where situations on the ground are different.

Hi Jose, I will now go through each one of your points and show a fallacy where possible: Land theft - 19 years of occupation on land, WB+GAZA+EJ that was never, not once assumed or earmarked for them, or is ok becuase they are Arabs? or because they lost it in aggresive wars? Aggressive Wars - 1948-9, 67 (since 48-9 end in ARMSTICE NOT PEACE TREATY, BREAKING OF ARMSTICE IS RESUMPTION OF WAR, I.e. expelling UN PEACE KEEPING FORCING, AMASSING AND FORTFYING TROOPS ON THE BORDER, NOT TO MENTION JORDANIAN INVOLVEMENT). 1973 - ATTACKING JEWS ON YOM KIPPUR, NOT THAT ISN'T LOW AT ALL. war atocracies unparalleled since WWII - That is certainly not true, let's see, Iraq, Afghanistan, NATO bombings of Serbia, all three of the above saw more civ casualties than Gaza OP, and partial, at least of, Gaza OP casualties liability can also be placed with HAMAS, Gazans protectors. US always try to favor Israel. They have not been a fair peace player. When rockets were fire in to Israel, they critized Hamas. When Israel committed crimes, killing innocent, destroying homes, using collective punishment, using Palestininas as human shields, delaying aid to Gaza, where os the US voice. How can they be a fair player, when alot of these crimes are also committed by US forces. Why haven't the US taken a stronger and harsher criticism of Israel for not living up to their end of the roadmap. Why does the US allow Israel to build and expand settlements with US taxpayer dollars. The US cannot be a fair player, because they cannot be objective, and that gives Idsraeli the green light to do whatever. Then Israelis blames the Palestinians for the failed peace process.Meanwhile,Israel governments are weak, and has never been committed to any peace process.Israel is good at saying things, and great at defying and deception. End the occupation, rockets will perhaps stop.

Talk is cheap.Arabs must prove they want peace with Israel first (remember their trojan horses saturated Peace iniciative?)and that they can force Hezbollah and Hamas to respect peace treaty with Israel. Until then this Amr Moussa's proposal is just this year last propaganda stunt.

Talk about snakes in the grass and backstabbing liars that won't abide by agreements, the Arab League (nor any other entity) can hold a candle to Israel over the past 50 years! Land theft, continous, gross violations of international laws, agressive wars on every bordering country resulting in more land theft, war atocracies unparalleled since WWII, The Wall, slaughter of civilians daily, etc, etc. really, how can anyone say there is any entity that can match a single one of Israel's blantant acts?

Hmmm, Let's see, 20 Arab countries, 50 Muslims ones, 170+ total in UN. Hmmm, I wonder, I really realy wonder. But why should the Arab league have any role in this issue? The arab league has been by far one of the biggest problems. Please prove me wrong on this issue, show me how valiant and generous arab nations have been to Palestinians in past present and future. Left Wingers, get your heads out of your behinds when it comes to these people, (Arab League not Arabs in general) they are Snakes that would eat your politicians, they should be feared for what they are and most certainly not trusted. They do not agree with all your beliefs and are just using your for thier own ends.

Over and over again, the USA has demonstrated a bias in favor of Israel. Even the Obama administration followed this path by capitulating to Netanyahu on settlements. There needs to be greater involvement of the UN and less of the USA. However the USA can help by taking action to stop funding Israel's human rights abuses of the Palestinians and supporting Palestine in the UN Security Council. Palestine needs a strong sponsor such as the EU or Russia to counter-balance the USA's support of Israel.

There can be no doubt that the US, as the poodle for Israeli actions, is totally tainted as a fair broker. Besides allowing the atrocities and illegal actions committed by Israel and unlimited funding, the US has paid a dear price globally. The terrorist attacks, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the loss of prestige and the trillions spent over the past decade can be directly linked to the US's biased support for Israel no matter what the world thinks. Enough already!

Has Israel ever followed the laws or chartes made by UN? Even today the most crusial charters have no meaning for Israel (occupation, unification of Jerusalem, the 1967 borders, the settlements)? And what are the results? I wonder what it could have been, if Israel has obeyed the international laws instead of breaking them during 60 years?

Besides this is Gods land, NOT Israels, Not the Arabs,it belongs to Gods people, those willing to obey God. The land is simple just divide it in half. But try to obey God thats much harder, and a much bigger more serious problem in my life and in yours. Cause someday the ends going to come.

Mousa, It is time to talk to Arab world about Iranian ambitions in the Gulf and Middle East. You don't need peace forces around Israel if Hamas and Hezbulla are disconnected from Iran. Iran is the main issue that you are ignoring, because you know that US will not let Iran walk on oil fields in the Gulf, Iran and Saudia Arabia. Without the US, you would worry a lot.

Getting the U.N. more involved is as balanced as getting the Jewish Defence League involved. Muslim's countries comprise the largest block of U.N. countries and have de facto control of at least another 1/3 of the countries that constitute the U.N. Hopefully, this is for consumption on the Arab street which is easily deceived, mislead and embroiled. No one can take seriously the involvement of the U.N. given its current demented focus on Israel at the expense of victims throughout the Islamic world, as in Yemen, Sudan and many, many other places.
