Arab Labor MK says airport security 'humiliated' her children

MK Hilou files complaint over incident, says it symbolizes discrimination suffered by Arabs in Israel.

By Yoav Stern Tags: Ben Gurion Airport

Israeli Arabs are subjected to humiliating treatment at Ben-Gurion International Airport just because of their ethnicity, MK Nadia Hilou said Sunday. Hilou added that she intended to write a letter of complaint on the matter to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

In her letter, Hilou said she intends to complain about how the airport's security officers treated her twin daughters last Sunday when they flew for a holiday in Prague. The two women - both studying for their master's degrees - were taken aside where their luggage was thoroughly frisked in plain sight of other passengers, Hilou said.

The MK filed an official complaint with the Israel Airports Authority, which is responsible for security procedures at the airport. The authority's spokesperson said the organization is studying the complaint, adding that the treatment the two women received "was according to protocol."

Hilou's daughters told her of the incident only after they returned to Israel last week. They said that after the frisking, a security officer was assigned to accompany them, presumably to make sure she did not receive anything to take onboard the plane.

"What happened to my daughters demonstrates what is happening to the entire Arab public in border crossings, and it is unacceptable," the complaint read.

Here we go again, Arab complex. I just returned from the US and went through the same security as described. I do not feel discriminated. Thank Yassir Arafat for all of this hassle and security, he was the first hijacker. Why cant they (Arabs) stop crying and get on with their lives?

I flew out of Ben-Gurion in September. I'm about as white-anglo-saxon-protestant looking as they come, and you know what? I was given the third degree as well. They questioned me at the gate to the airport, as soon as I got out of the taxi, and again when I was standing in line for the baggage screening. They swabbed my shoes and the inside of all my bags. I took it all in stride - I knew it was for my own good. If anything, it was amusing, but certainly not humiliating. If I can deal with it, they can too.

It's your prerogative whioch airline to take, and a good thing too, since we wouldn't all want to compete for one line;'s business. Just please let me point out that of all the countries of this planet, the germans is one that showed true remorse and repented for what they did, and paid a huge price for it. There is no german person who doesn't know about the holocaust and - to my knowledge - is not deeply ashamed of it. By contrast, let's consider turkey (what? us slaughter Armenians? couldn't be!), Japanese (oh, korean comfort ladies? what's that?), Israel (nabqa? they brought it on themselves. occupation? ditto), US (1 M dead vietnamese? oops! 1 M dead Iraqis? saddam would have killed them anyways...). Shall I add a few? China? Russia? UK? France? As for Arabs taking El Al, I know they do - that was part of the story here. My comment was a suggestion not to, that's all. Frankly, I feel safer on most European airlines with their emphasis on training, maintenance and employees.

cheapest flight and take your chances...Most of us would prefer to get there in one piece without being hijacked or flown into buildings.. If KLM, or any other airline departs from Lod, they must undergo Israeli security measures and can be trusted...However, I wouldn't fly Lufthansa under any circumstances...A close relative die while I live in Israel, the only way to get to the U.S. in time for the funeral was to fly Lufthansa...I wouldn't take the flight and arrived after the burial..My family fully understand... We do take ELAL, it can be trusted to arrive in one piece..I don't know where you got the insane idea that EL EL doesn't have Arab passengers, it does, it was an Arab and her daughters that were under discussion....All passengers are scrutinized, for security purposes...

Your responses are enlightening, as expected. It is next to people like you that I wouldn't want to sit, since the word "human" hardly applies. The racism you all exhibit is typical of those who think that just because some jews were smart, it rubs of on all. Examples of brilliant writing: "Go ahead, fly on some gypsy airlines, maybe I`ll see your name in the papers" (BEN JABO) Sweet. if you consider Lufthansa, KLM and JAL gypsy airlines, by all means avoid them. Will leave more bargains for the rest of us. "To DEFY danger by throwing oneself at it, is NOT "civil" in my opinion. It is stupidity" (Alice of Wonderland) See comment to BEN JABO. Take El Al by all means and avoid SAS or any airline proven to have Arabic passengers. "How about flying Saudi Air instead?" (Israeli turkey) Last I saw, they don't fly into israel, and i occasionally need to go there, just like to many other countries. It's OK, there are dozens of good airlines vying for business. You can take El Al.

At present, and since 9/11, American Airports have upgraded their security checks...If you'll take the trouble and use some intelligence, you will note the three aircraft were hijacked from American Airports...A plane has never been hijacked after the passengers underwent Israeli security, both in the U.S. & Israel...Of course, if you want to take the chance, fly another airline and avoid Lod Airport, too many jews there and their presence will offend your senses..... As a matter of fact, I had occasion to fly to Cyprus, underwent a thorough check at Lod..Upon departing Cyprus, I received a very thorough body search by Cypriot authorities...They too wanted to avoid a potential hijacking...I never thought of claiming that they were being anti-semitic, just thought they were doing an excellent job of protecting me and the other passengers...Go ahead, fly on some gypsy airlines, maybe I'll see your name in the papers..

Of course, you breeze right through during security checks at American airports...They just look at you and laugh, knowing you're going to make idiotic comments...American Airports have 80 year old grandmothers disrobe in private, remove their shoes and give them a thorough security check...Planes that were hijacked on 9/11 were stolen from American Airports...Passengers departing Israel feel quite safe since the security check is quite thorough...To-date, there has never been a successful hijacking on flights that went through Israeli security...

Some years ago in the Canaries, the Scandinavian passengers refused to board a SAS-plane, unless they removed the two Arab-Moslem-passengers from the plane. The Moslems, who live in Scandinavia, were compensated for "discriminaion" though, for they were removed! BUT they became millionaires. The FEAR that IS HOLDING all of us HOSTAGE is rewarding too to the Moslems here in the "civil" West, as you can learn from this example! To DEFY danger by throwing oneself at it, is NOT "civil" in my opinion. It is stupidity!

I really don't see why people would choose El Al when there are enough other perfectly excellent airlines like Lufthansa and British Airways. The service is not particularly great, one has to show up atrociously early, the security procedcures are more labyrintian, and there's good chance of being seated next to some unpleasant hairy religious fellow in heavy polish garb in summer who'll be unfriendly and a bore. Clearly anyone with an Arab name is a target for discrimination in israel, because that's what an apartheid states do. Why expect any different? The israeli arabs are second class citizens, on land and in air, but they should fight the discrimination on the world's stage not with yet another haaretz article. And though it is not possible to avoid crazy security procedures in a country that is hardly a poster child for humanity, at least people can avoid taking religiously zealous airlines. Let those who see bombs everywhere fly El Al. I'd rather have civility and courtesy.

I flew out of Kennedy Airport on El Al and had my luggage searched in front of everybody. The only difference was that I am a Kippa wearing Jew and my interview was conducted largely in Hebrew. I was also travelling on an Israeli solidarity trip and was wearing a nametag stating as much with a folder from our group. It happens, I dealt with it, and had a lovely trip to Israel. When I flew to Israel on another airline, I was appalled that I was not searched, not questioned, but just handed a boarding pass as though I was flying to Toledo.

All the Arabs who don't like Israeli security checks are free to cross into Jordan and fly from Amman. When the Arabs stop terrorism maybe airports will treat them more sympathetically. Until then they will be viewed as a potential terrorist until proven, through a thorough and possibly invasive search and screening, otherwise.

Even after the security guard spoke to me in Hebrew and asked me a dozen or more questions did he hand me over to search for a key chain I received from the group I attended which was at the bottom of my luggage. Even the girls forced to search it told me to go on and told me it was amusing to the guy to have me searched for no reason. I did not appreciate this but it was not because I was an Arab it was because he was an Israeli.

Luggage is not frisked, people are. Luggage is searched. But using the word 'frisked' in proximity to the phrase 'two women' gives those readers who skim the article the impression that the women were frisked in front of everyone. And that result is not unintentional. But what can we do -- folks at Haaretz.com are required as a condition of their employment to turn every page on their site into verbal weapons to be used against the evil zionist entity, hopefully to lead to its destruction or dismemberment and replacement by the People's Democratic Republic of Palestine.

London Mayor Ken Livingstone has accused Heathrow of keeping people "as prisoners" in its "ghastly shopping mall." The line-ups for security checks became intolerable after August 2006, when a terrorist plan targeting planes flying from Britain to the United States was uncovered. Similar situations can be found at most of Europe's major airports.
