Arab bloc drops plan to seek UN censure of IDF actions in Gaza

Arab states to attempt to secure presidential declaration from UN Security Council president.

By Shlomo Shamir Agencies

Arab ambassadors to the UN dropped a plan Tuesday to seek a Security Council condemnation of Israeli military actions in the Gaza Strip.

The Arab states will attempt to secure only a declaration from the Security Council's current president. The declaration, however, will likely also take into account the recent increase in Qassam rocket attacks on Israel.

The Security Council was expected to convene on Tuesday or Wednesday for a formal discussion of the complaint put forth by Arab representatives on "the ongoing Israeli aggression" in the Gaza Strip.

According to UN sources, the unusual Arab hesitation to refrain from pushing for a condemnation of Israel stems from the belief they wouldn't be able to secure a majority vote in the Security Council.

"The Arabs are well aware of the feeling among a large part of the Council, which views harshly the absence of a response on the part of Hamas leaders to Qassam attacks on Israel," a senior Western diplomat told Haaretz.

According to the diplomat, consultations Arab representatives held with Security Council member made it clear a majority of members were leaning toward a balanced response to Israeli actions, which would make negative reference to Palestinian Qassam attacks.

A day earlier, Palestinian UN Observer Riyad Mansour said, "The international community cannot continue to stand idly by while defenseless women, children and men continue to be killed, wounded and maimed."

The 15-nation council, "in upholding its duty to maintain international peace and security, should take action," Mansour said in a letter to Chinese Ambassador Wang Guangya, the Security Council president for April.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan issued a statement over the weekend expressing concern about the increasing violence on both sides, including rocket attacks on Israeli targets and Israeli reprisals.

Relatives mourn the death on Tuesday of an 8-year-old Palestinian girl killed in an IDF shelling in Gaza the day before. (AP)

This from UNSC 1435 (9/24/2002): Condemning all terrorist attacks against any civilians, including the terrorist bombings in Israel on 18 and 19 September 2002 and in a Palestinian school in Hebron on 17 September 2002, If it weren't for the fact that UN resolutions are slow to load, due to being PDF files, I would call you an idiot for never bothering to read them.

Rename UN to UMN - United Muslim Nations

UN has long been a forum for non democratic nations. Most of the muslims nations without any democrasy or freedom of speech. If UMN continues supporting non democratic values UMN will soon be irrelevant. One good idea would be a change in the policy for refugees. The islamic protest aginst freedom of speech showed that the cultural difference between the West and Islam is greater than antissipated. UMN should devide refugees according to their culture. If muslim refugees were directed to muslim countries and Christian to the West, the world would soon get the true picture of Islam.

Perhaps israel ought to begin to invite the w. papuans and the southern sudanese to form exile governments in israel. Being one of the few nations that has been able to take its land back from the Islamists, it would seem only proper to take on the cause of those who have not been able to, but are desperately trying. This would shed some new light on the jewish fight to keep itself from being overtaken by the islamic and arab agendas.

CHRISTOPHER explains: ?IF PALESTINIAN CIVILIANS ALLOW THE TERRORISTS TO OPERATE FROM THEIR NEIGHBORHOODS, BACKYARDS, AND TOWNS, TO FIRE QASSAM ROCKETS THEN THEY ARE JUST AS GUILTY AS THE TERRORISTS THEMSELVES.? Logic would dictate Palestinians are morally superior based on Christopher?s assertion. We can say that ?if Israeli civilians allow the occupation to operate from their neighborhoods, backyards, and towns, to reinforce the occupation command centers and manpower, then they, the Israeli civilians are just as guilty as the Israeli occupational forces. Palestinians then have, according to Christopher?s logic, the right to continue with their methods of breaking away from the occupation by attacking the so called "civilians". Thanks Chris for the help!

I agree that although HAMAS is a terrorist organization, they are infinitely more honest than the PLO, FATAH and especially that guileless ARAFAT! That said, elected or not, honest or not, they ARE a terrorist organization dedicated to the destruction of the State of Israel. I wouldn't bother asking them to acknowledge Israel's right to exist--that is a fact in itself. I would simply respond to terrorist acts and let them live with the consequences ... the inaccuracy or primitive nature of their weapons notwithstanding, they are determined to terrorize and Israel should stay determined to defend itself ... even if it's superior firepower hurts the Palestinians. Let them take it up with their elected bosses! Fair is fair! I acknowledge Hamas' comparative honesty but remind them of the courage it takes to live by the sword ... this is why they cannot go to the UN with their complaint. First, they know it would be hypocritical and second, no one will listen anymore!

The Arab bloc may finally see the truth. Hamas is not even an organization. They are fellow members of chaos , destruction and rebellion. All the diplomacy in the world has not been able to bring them into the United Nations or any other respectable body of government. If they are considered to be in a prison, they deserve much worse. Although a remnant will survive amongst them, Hamas is going down- forever. They chose war decades ago so let them reap the shrapnel they sowed in suicide, the time has come to annul their covenant with death. Remember ALL of the buses they destroyed in peace time- let nobody forget those images- print them like they were yesterday!

UNR 181 stated that two States would be created in the 22% of British Mandate Palestine that wasn't already off-limits to Jews and made into Jordan. The Muslims ignored law, declared war against Israel and attacked. They are still in that State of War. UNR 242 stated that Arabs must end their war, make peace and that real borders should be negotiated. The Muslims not only ignored the law, their nations gathered and published a proclamation stating that they would do no such thing. Palestinians signed the Oslo Accords in 1993, stating they'd change their constitution and recognize Israel. 13 years later, they're still violating their agreement and calling for Israel's destruction. Palestinians signed the Road Map and have not accomplished one Phase I task, but demand that Israel immediately jump to Phase III. You and your terrorist friends consistently ignore international law and then blame Israel for your actions. You should be ashamed, but your hate occludes that feeling.

International community should be censuring Palestinians for bombing Israel every day. Israel has been very patient with this daily bombing. Tell, me, why are the Palestinians above the law when they bomb Israel, and Israel is not allowed to protect itself weeks after the daily bombing of Israel? NO other country on this planet would have waited as long as Isarel to strike back. It shows how moral Israel is and how little Palestinians want peace. They hide amoung civilians. Use their money to bomb Israel instead of providing food and jobs. This is black and white. Palestinians are 100% to blame for committing these war crimes.

It is sort of like the indigenous populations of Indians in both the US and Canada - as the old saying goes...'the only good Indian was a dead Indian - and so today in Israel eyes...the only good Palestinian is a 'dead Palestinian" So much for having 'learned' the lessons of peace, love, harmony etc from their experience. It truly saddens me when I reflect on the cruelty of man towards his fellow man. I'm glad I'm near the end of this life. Too much cruely, war, inhumanity has happened and not on country has learned anything about the concepts of "We are our brothers keepers"

No terror attacks with Israeli casualties in Jan/Feb. In March/April 6 Israelis lost their lives. Since Jan.2006 IDF killed - during raids and by targeted assassinations - about 75 Palestinians, among them 20 minors below 18. And you call that self-defense!! Shlomo, this kind of blindness is not being understood by anyone other than Israeli extremists. In the eyes of the Civilized World the excessive force used by IDF has damaged the reputation of Israel maximally. Your country does definitely not share with us any of our core values, hence - as much as our political class may court Israel to please the Bush administration - the "ordinary" people lost all of the formerly very great sympathy for your country.

"If Israel was forced into war...then go back to the 1967 and let us see your peaceful intentions." Israel propose to give back all of the territories after the 6 Days War, the Arabs had a summit and the results were the 3 Nos: No negotation, no recognition, no peace! "Israeli PM`s have claimed the goal of peace even while occupying lands from 5 of their neighbors." Heuh???? Ok, let's see: Lebanon, Syria, Egypt and Jordan that's 4. Except if... no you couldn't! Oh well except if you include the so called Palestinian. That means that at best you consider Gaza and the West Bank belonging to 3 people which would be illogical or at worst you define ISrael as "Occupied Palestine". Hypocrite! "It is deeds, not words, that count and show intentions!" My point exactly! Return of the Sinai? Withdrawal of Lebanon? Authority on most of the West Bank to the PA? Gaza? Israel has shrunk mostly during the past 25 years however terrorism has increased. Do the math!

    • 11.04.06
    • 16:31

The PA wants to bring Israel's anti-rocket operation issue to the SC of the UN. This is utter cynicism. Now, as there are no Israelis in Gaza, it became a launching pad for rockets against Israel. Now, as there are no Israelis on the Gaza-Egyptian border, this border became the place to smuggle Katiushas. And when Israel defends itself -- the PA cries afoul and wants Israel's condemnation in the UN. This is simply disgusting. Instead of weeping, the Palestinians should dismantle the private armies, according to agreements they signed, and stop their aggression against Israel. The Palestinian intifada is a crime against humanity, it should be treated in a way crimes against humanity are treated.

Eban said in 1955 before the UNSC the following about Egypt - replace Egypt by PA and you'll get problem! "Egypt considers and proclaims that there is "a state of war". In the name of that "state of war", Egypt asserts a "right" to perform hostile acts of its choice against Israel. On the other hand, Egypt claims immunity from any hostile response emanating from Israel. This is the doctrine of unilateral belligerency, and it has no parallel or precedent in the jurisprudence of nations...the Security Council's authority is today invoked to protect Egypt against any reaction which its active prosecution of the "state of war" may elicit. t would be strictly and scientifically accurate to describe the essence of the Egyptian position in two sentences: Egypt may behave towards Israel as though there were war. Israel must behave towards Egypt as though there were peace."

Poor Dutch, never responds to facts, and just repeats the same tired propoganda. He/she/it just can't accept that the Arabs declared the war, the Arabs continue to wage the war, and the Arabs are the only ones who can change from jihad and make peace. However, while the Palestinian Authority, Fatah and Hamas all have constitutions calling for Israel's destruction, that's just not going to happen. Dutch also ignores that 70% of Israeli casualties are civilians while only 35% (that's half, Dutch) of the Palestinians casualties are. It shows that Israelis target terrorists who hide among civilians, a violation of the GC. It shows that Palestinians target civilians. Of course, the truth would hurt, so the judeophobes will stay in their surreality.

It seems hypocritical if viewed from the perspective that all people are equal under G-d. However, if one is fighting an internal Arab-nation battle, i.e. non democratic, totalitarian (quasi-redundant?), brutal regime, and an external one against what you perceive to be your own destiny, i.e. pan-Arab, and/ or pan-Islamic, with this little-big annoyance (a strong Israel), you quite rightly, and non-hypocritically have reduced, the other (i.e. "us")to a concept set of humanity that doesn’t match ours. And yet, wait a minute, and to not equate approaches by any means; there are times when we also think of the other as less than human.... hmmmmmn. Peace. When?

The Arab Council is right to seek the Security Council.action against Israel. No state should be allowed to escalate the violence against another people and take the law into its own hands like this. This level of violence is immoral and it will never achieve justice as Martin Luther King , Jr. points out below. Violence destroys brotherhood and it keeps society and people in a monologue instead of a dialogue. That can never be right. People need to talk and work out agreements that will properly address their problems not just create more. Thank you, Dutch P.S. Martin Luther King, Jr notes on Violence: Violence as a way of archiving justice is both impractical and immoral. It is impractical because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all. The old eye for an eye leaves everyone blind. It is immoral because it seek to humiliate the opponent rather than win his understanding; it seek to annihilate rather than to convert. Violence is immoral as it thrives on hatred rather than love. It destroys community and brotherhood impossible. It leaves society in a monologue rather than a dialogue. Violence ends by defeating itself. It creates bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers. . Martin Luther King, jr.

It really is too bad about the innocent women and children amongst the Palestinians. Of course, we all know that it is NOT the Israelis that are at fault. It is the terrorists who abduct these women and children from amongst their own and drag them along to their launch sites, as protection from Israeli reprisals. The terrorists know that Jews are reluctant to harm innocent bystanders, so they hope to carry out an attack and get away with it. They are the ultimate cowards. (By the way, it helps to go on these "fact-finding" missions, like I did, and see these things for yourself!) (I was amazed to see the relief on the faces of many Arabs, when, in the middle of the night, they see Israeli soldiers searching for terrorists. Their response was "Thank God they're here, otherwise, are daughters are likely to be abducted and raped by our own!" ) (Why on earth do the Palestinians want their own state?? They're so much better off under Israel's control!)

"The international community cannot continue to stand idly by while defenseless women, children and men continue to be killed, wounded and maimed," Palestinian UN Observer Riyad Mansour said. For your information, 15 of the men killed were terrorists, the other was one's son. They are anything but defenseless- they carry MK47s and launch Kassams. If they're afraid to fight airplanes, let them come as real men and fight a gun battle; instead they shoot Kassams like women, hiding behind innocent civilians. The only fact he got right is that innocent men, women and children are being killed, wounded and maimed- Israeli citizens who are attacked simply for being Israeli, not for shooting Kassams, firing guns, or unfortunately, being brought by their father to terrorist training camps.

Don't misunderstand me, i'm not condoning Israels actions, its just after years of the UN ignoring Palestinian attacks against Israeli citizens, this really would be the biggest chutzpah of all.

The Palestinians made their "democratic" choice in electing Hamas and therefore lack true and reliable leadership and until a competent, unsellish and motivated leader steps up to the plate, the vicious cycle of murder will continue.
