Anti-Islamist leader scores major win in Dutch polls

Wilders, who compares Islam to fascism, the Koran to Adolf Hitler's 'Mein Kampf,' could be next Dutch PM.

By Reuters Tags: Islam Israel news

Dutch anti-Islamist leader Geert Wilders scored major gains in local authority polls on Thursday, making him a serious challenger for power in a June national election, preliminary results showed.

In the first test of public opinion since the collapse of Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende's coalition government last month, Wilders's Freedom Party (PVV) led in the city of Almere and was second in The Hague.

The results came on top of an opinion poll showing that the PVV, which campaigns against Muslim immigration as its main platform, would win the most seats - 27 in the 150-member Dutch parliament - in the June 9 election.

The popularity of Wilders, who compares Islam to fascism and the Koran to Adolf Hitler's book "Mein Kampf", has dented the image of the Netherlands as a country that has often portrayed itself in the past as a bastion of tolerance.

The PVV has been pitching its policies to a nation of 16 million that is turning increasingly inward as the economy struggles and social tensions rise. There are nearly 1 million Muslims in the Netherlands.

"The leftist elite still believes in multi-culturalism, coddling criminals, a European super-state and high taxes," Wilders told cheering supporters at a rally in Almere after polling ended on Wednesday.

"But the rest of the Netherlands thinks differently. That silent majority now has a voice," he said.

Andre Krouwel, professor of political science at Vrije University in Amsterdam, said: "You can see there's a lot of discontent in the electorate. Clearly Wilders is going to use these results as a stepping stone for national elections."

Wilders, who has faced death threats, was under tight security at his rally on Wednesday.

People had to pass through metal detectors and security officers patted everyone down for concealed weapons.

"There are many Muslims who want to take part in the community, but there is a percentage who want to make problems," said bus driver Theo Verstappen, 53.

"Those who make problems are not being dealt with properly. It's not too much to ask that people who come here share our values."

. . . to criminality packaged as religion. Islamist rioting thugs running rampant in the streets for weeks do not constitute proper public discourse or protest. Knives in the backs of critics securing notes "explaining" the murder as religious revenge are hardly civil behaviour designed to do anything but cow the populace into dehimi status. There is an understandable and honourable backlash which is also evidencing in France, Switzerland and Britain. Muslims do not have a right to violence and mayhem. This is an issue of justice, peace and civil society. It has nothing to do with the nazi past, though today's neo-nazis may well try to exploit it. The real facists to watch and stop in their tracks are the islamist thugs. Good luck Wilders.

Dear Israeli friends, We have to face the mistakes made in the past. The Netherlands imported islam and together with islam came intolerance against anything non islamic. Also they brought their jew hate with them. We Dutch people cant be tolerant anymore towards islam since it proved to be very non tolerant to us. Geert Wilders will fight the islamization and he will have millions of Dutch people backing him up. What other country s think about Geert Wilders doesnt matter. What matters is that we protect our land and make it safe for the future. If we let this islamization continue it will get us in the end. Dear Israeli s Geert Wilders will be youre best friend and the ones that support him will be youre best friends. Please support us as we are trying to make the best out of a bad situation. God bless you !! Greetings from Holland

"It`s one thing to encourage Muslims in a western democracy to become a full part of it and share its values. Nothing wrong with that, as long as it`s done in an intelligent and sensitive way." Encourage Muslims to share our values? Why? I'll be honest with you Mike and I think I can speak for huge majority of people in Europe now. WE DON'T WANT MUSLIMS HERE...they are in Europe thanks to lefties and our spineless corrupt politicians not because we want them here.Never we will accept those people on our land and if you want us to encourage them to share our values then you have to drown our resistance in our blood and submitt the rest first. You can start with Geert Wilders. Ooops, you've started already,I forgot Van Gogh..... And because you always ask people opposing Islam How many Muslims they've met in their lives, here is my answer to save your time: The fact I'm still alive is the best proof that I've met no Muslim yet. Van Gogh,Kriss Donald and those murdered in London & Madrid were not that lucky.

The fact is that Islam has ZERO tolerance for any other religion (How many churches are there in Saudi Arabia?). Most terrorism in our world is nourished and encouraged by Islamic ideology. Geert Wilders is a brave and honorable man! Let's hope his influence continues to grow and spread all over Europe.

The Dutch have been known for their tolerance of others (and sometimes the contrary). However, many Dutch realize that their society has gone too far in coddling immigrants who want to push the beliefs and customs they've brought from their countries onto the natives. Much of the fault lies with the Muslim community. If they respect their host country's customs, traditions, and laws, I'm sure there would be much less backlash against their growing communities. But it's absurd that some foreigners come to Holland and begin punishing or protesting against the Dutch for following their age-old traditions and customs. With all that said, Wenders is no one for Jews or any minority to admire. His rejection of Muslims today in Holland could quickly find another target among other minorities according to circumstances.

Many are waiting to be struggled by the hydra. The original gradually think and behave like the stealth conquerors, who in 21st century do not come charging and slicing the heads of infidels with a sword. They come and multiply and the demography changes and the same sacred democracy principles that you cherish would be a thing of the past. When you become the minority, imagine living in Iran,Saudi Arabia,Pakistan,Bangladesh. The first democratic elections would often be okay ,but, bet you, the winner would ensure there would not be a second one like the first one. They would revert. In fact , the new Europe would soon have the very same tyrants and mullahs who care too hoots about freedom of speech and democracy that EXIST in a civil society. Liberals are ready to give up to be PC. As an emigrant ,you shed those unproductive ethics that pull you down ;instead, evolve along with the country you have chosen as yours ,not impose your culture ,the very culture that has prevented you from thinking outside the box. Do not live in enclaves ,you assimilate in the mainstream of your new society, new country in which you arrived on your own free accord. Three cheers for Wilder !

Once again many on this forum are mangling the english language. I am not speaking of those who have an excuse, such as english is their second or third languages. I am speaking of the ignorant gang of idologues who are just plain morons. Many speak of facism here, yet they seem to have no idea of what facism actually is. Please google Mussolini and facism, and you will get the answer. Racism is another word which has been perverted and raped. Because someone in a democratic nation is worried by the growth of an anti-democratic force in the country this does not make him/her a racist. As for Nazi, this word has also been misused usually by those who use the veneer of "progressivism" to cover their own National Socialist tendiencies. Geerd has spoken up not against the average Moslem in Holland seeking to become a part of the society, but against those who push for Sharia law, and have no problem resorting to violence to push their agenda. God help the language.

You should not ty to comment on a country that you know nothing about: There have been NO anti-cartoon demonstrations by Muslims in the Netherlands. (Are you mixing us up perhaps with Denmark? You would not be the first to do so.) Also, contemporary writings show that when the Huguenots and others came to the Netherlands there were complaints about them also, and that they were not integrated right away into Dutch society at all. There are still separate Huguenot ('Waalse')churches in the Netherlands to this day for instance, and the language of the service is still French, not Dutch. Go figure.

The Jews, the French, the Flemish all integrated within Dutch society. They also kept their individuality but not at the cost of the Dutch people themselves. The Moslem immigrants for the most part have also integrated into Dutch society ...but...a growing percentage have not and are influencing others that are too afraid to speak out for fear of reprisal. The example was the cartoon fiasco. I do not remember any cry and hue from the moslem community against the backlash of the radical fringe.

His moto was not that differnt than Wilder's. Instead of wanting to "preserve his culture and values" he simply wanted to preserve the purity of his race's color and blood. His supporters, at the time, did not see anything wrong with that, but his true intention became very clear later on. Mr. Hit & Mr. Wilder don't care who their victim is. Surprising to see so many people identifying with a peroxid blond opportunist and having an opinion on politics of a country they don't live in(and don't know much about). Mr Geert Wilders was kicked out of the liberal party after serving them for 10+ years. Now he has set up his own political 'shop' attrackting the disappointed, the failed, the simple of mind and the lovers of 'own country & people 1st' who dislike the migrants who have been brought here by employers & the govt in the 1960's. Some of the children of the Maroccans particularly have drifted into gang activity & crime. The penal law deals with them. The 'party for freedom' has a sirens call which tries to lead Dutch politics astray, like Pim Fortuyn did. This is about making a living of discontent: 'voicing the opinion of the common people'. This kind of 'lehitkarneef'(rinoceros behaviour) is happening in Israel too since the 1970's. That's why Israel's politics in such a mess.

As a Dutchman residing abroad I am apalled, but not surprised, by the revolting retoric of Geert Wilders. It is election time again. In the Netherlands we always had extreme rightwing/neonazi groups trying to exploit xenophobia and the economic uncertainty. The favourite scapegoats for the extreme right in the Netherlands at the moment is the muslim community as a whole, not just the extremist islamist fringe group, that was responsible for the murder of Theo van Gogh. That is the consequence of Wilders associating Islam with Fascism and the Kor'an with Mein Kampf. I will make sure that I will cast my vote in this year's general election to help keep out the black forces of intolerance. Any Israeli who thinks that people like Wilders are good for Israel should think again.

What the hell is wrong with a political party staking out territory that says no religious group is going to fundamentally alter our free society? What is wrong with being a society that cares about maintaining its traditions, laws and values and wishes to not see those altered to suit the tenets of a 1600 year old book?? Wilders represents the way the decent, silent majority thinks in the civilized world and the Left, while it will bleat ever more loudly, has no idea what's hit it and how fundamentally its doctrine is being rejected.

Wilders is for freedom of speech (even if Muslims, or others, feel hurt), freedom of and from religion (w/o anybody imposing his or her religious beliefs on others), equality between men and women, gay rights and the fundamental principal of one law for all - natives or immigrants (rather than subcultures of immigrants developing their own community rules which may include oppression of women and homophobia. This is now neo-nazism? Not the Islamofascism that kills filmmakers and drove a Muslim woman who was an MPout of the country? And don't try to scare us with the BS "first they come for Muslims then for Jews" story: Jews are attackedon an almost daily basis by Islamofascists in Europe, not people who insists on principles of democaracy and pluralism against a phoney "multiculturaslism", a code word for accepting and imposing elements of Sharia law into Europe.

Jews, Huguenots, Calvinits, Hashis smokers, Homos all these had and still have Holland as safe heaven. So did Muslims before Dutch learned better. Is it not time for Muslims to do some retrospection?

Don't become the thing you hate. It's one thing to encourage Muslims in a western democracy to become a full part of it and share its values. Nothing wrong with that, as long as it's done in an intelligent and sensitive way. It's a very different thing to make campaigning against Muslims, and pretending that Muslims are the main problem of a country, your single main platform. That approach remind you of something?

It looks like there waits a nice task for "Een Ander Joods Geluid" [ part of the anti-Israel camp in Holland] and other groups of their kind. Together with finger pointing at our misstandings they will have their hands full at home and secretly realize that Israel is maybe bad, but not that bad...As for Wilders, he is a dangerous populist riding the wave of regular citizens anxiety concerning the future. Ah, whats new under the sun? Gur nichts...

The Dutch are tolerant, but there must be a limit. You can't tolerate people who want to overthrow your civilisation. Most Europeans have the same view -- either become part of Europe or go elsewhere. There are 57 Muslim countries.

by outrageous rants against Islam as a whole and comparing the Koran to Mein Kampf, is not the way to deal with extremist fanatical Muslims who refuse to accept the laws of the Netherlands. The rabble-rousing populist rhetoric only helps the extremists. Wilders' aggressive, over-the-top rants are as distasteful as the rants of the imams attacking Dutch values and society. It is perfectly possible to insist that immigrants accept the values of the host country, learn the language and respect the laws. This can be done in an inclusive, respectful manner with understanding of the immigrants' religion and culture. It is very unfortunate that the lack of thought-out policies and programmes regarding integration of immigrants in the Netherlands in the past has given ammunition to Wilders and his ilk. The pendulum swinging to the other extreme.

    Anti-Islamist?

A man who likens Islam to Fascism and the Koran to Mein Kampf is not "anti-Islamist". He is anti-Muslim. He is a racist pure and simple. No-one (sensible) would hesitate to agree that a man who likened Judaism to Fascism and the Torah to Mein Kampf was an anti-semite. And rightly so.

And in Europe it tends to swing farther than other places. It might get quite uncomfortable for Muslims (and eventually Jews and other minorities) in the near future.

It's so easy for you to talk about something you don't know: how many muslims do live in NZ? I live in France and believe me far right parties are not the biggest threat for jews. There are ten times more muslims in France than jews and they are so happy to blame jewish people for all their problems. They are the real fuel for antisemitism here.

Wilders does not represent the old racist radical right. The New Right in Europe is not against multiethic society. It is not either against multiculturalism if it is a tool for integrating immigrants into a national civic liberal nation. The problem is with newcomers that set conditions to their full integration. Societies in Europe are right in telling them that "you are welcome into the club but the laws are already set up and we have a national culture that we want to protect". This is compatible to liberalism. Pym Fortyum was a liberal and Theo Van Ghog

it is the turn of Muslims. When economic times are tough it is easiest to look for someone to blame... "Throw out the foreigners!" has been heard all through the ages. In fact, the Netherlands has done very well by accepting Portuguese and Spanish (Jewish) refugees, French Huguenots and Flemish Calvinists. And during the economic boom they invited the Turks, Marokkans etc with open arms to do the low-skilled, low-paid jobs that the Dutch did not want to do. To paraphrase the poet "The Moor has done his job, now he has to go".

The party PVV only participated in 2 of the 350+ villages, towns and cities. So yes he won major in the two places, but not ( yet ) in the rest of the Netherlands. He's not quite there yet
