The head of the Histadrut labor federation, Amir Peretz, emerged the upset victor in internal elections for leader of the Labor Party.

Peretz attracts a number of new faces to the party, but alienates many veterans, particularly elder stateman Shimon Peres, who would quit Labor for Kadima.
