Amid protests, Egypt defends right to build Gaza wall
Regional critics accuse Egypt of aiding in blockade of Gaza by building wall to curb smuggling.
By DPA Tags: Israel newsEgyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit on Wednesday defended Egypt's right to secure its border in the government daily al-Akhbar, while the government gave the green light for a limited protest of the reinforcement.
"What Egypt is doing is placing structures on its territory related to Egyptian defense," the foreign minister said.
Egypt's upper house of parliament, the Shura Council, likewise issued a document endorsing the government's security measures in northern Sinai and along the border, the government-owned daily al-Gomhuriya reported Wednesday.
In recent weeks photos purportedly showing a reinforced steel wall being built underground along the Egyptian-Gazan border have revived domestic and regional criticism of Egypt's role in maintaining the blockade of the Gaza Strip.
Activists from around the world this week gathered in Cairo in the hopes of marching to the Gaza border to protest its closure.
The Egyptian government initially banned the protest march. But faced with the rising criticism, the government on Tuesday told organizers of the Gaza Freedom March that 100 of the activists could march to the border.
Egypt has repeatedly defended increased security at the border as necessary for maintaining its sovereignty and national security. In January 2008, during Israel's military campaign in the Gaza Strip, thousands of Gazans breached the border, pouring into the Egyptian side of the divided town of Rafah to buy food and other goods.
Egypt has long been under international pressure, particularly from Israel and the United States, to stop the smuggling of basic commodities, contraband, and weapons through tunnels under the border.
Israel and Egypt closed the Gaza Strip's borders after Hamas took control of the territory in 2006.

This wall isn't just an anti-Gaza Arabs scheme but part of Egypt's long term anti-Israel plan. Of course Egypt refused to take the Gaza Strip back when it was offered at Camp David, despite seeming so keen to occupy it for 19 years. Egypt presented the Gaza Strip to Israel as a Trojan Horse in the hope that it would cause Israel's downfall at no cost to Egypt and they nearly got away with it. Now nobody wants the Gaza Strip.Israel has got out and defends its border as any sovereign state is entitled to do.Egypt has no further use for the Gaza Strip and wouldn't dare to take it back in case it becomes a Trojan Horse that destroys the Egyptian governing elite and still hopes to throw it back at Israel, hence the wall. To put it another way,the Gaza Strip is a monster of Egypt's making and it's been left to feed on itself. THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!
We are still searching for the ruler of Palestine prior to 1967 or for that matter prior to 1948. We are searching for evidence of the King, the Queen, the Prime Minister, or the President...anything that will prove to us once and for all that Palestine was a country. Until now all we have is the proof that Egypt controlled Gaza and Trans Jordan controlled the West Bank.
Prior to the 1967 War .... Gaza was under the control of Egypt and the West Bank was under the control of Trans Jordan. I will use the term control rather than "occupied". Read everything...not just what you want to hear.
prior to 1967 Gaza was part of Egypt, thats until the six day war broke out, Egypt wanted the Sinai but not Gaza strip. BTW: why is Rafah as a town divided between Egypt and Hamas territory???And why was the West Bank known as trans Jordan???now neither of them want anything to do with these territories but cry foul on what happens there in the conflict???
After 1948 it was under Egyptian control??? Why didnt they want it back even though we offered it to them????
of Palestine. Just Check the Partition Map, may be you will learn a bit about Gaza
I have this strange feeling that there actually is some kind of anti-semetism here. If "the Jews" are closing off one side to protect themselves from a population that has proven to be unfriendly, okay, that makes sense, but Egypt?! The official Egyptian position is that the Palestinian Arabs have a right to national self determination, though for some reason keeping them out of Egypt doesn't seem to promoting the idea very well. So it would seem that the Israel government gets the blame for bein' cruel and unusual while the Egyptians government who are not all that sympathetic to Palestinian Arabs in Gaza are let off the hook by erstwhile liberals who don't know much about the Arab world accuse Jews and the Jewish State of being a "threat to world peace".
"Gaza is part of Egypt!" - Lost Planet Airman This was true during part of the Second Kingdom. . . . Get real. Gaza is not part of Egypt, nor was it part of Egypt in 1948. Israel insists that it is the Legal Occupying Power in Gaza and ultimately responsible for administration of Gaza See, Israeli Foreign Ministry web site at http://www.mfa.gov.il/mfa/peace%20process/reference%20documents/ The peace treaty between Israel and Egypt requires Egypt to secure it's border with Israel AND Gaza as it is territory OCCUPIED by Israel. All Egypt is doing is complying with it's peace treaty and securing it's side of the border with Occupied Gaza.
There is no blockade! Israel is still supplying water, gas, electricity, food and medicine to the Iranian-controlled terrorist regime in Gaza.
Never heard of protesters marching for Copts in Egypt, but build a wall omg....!
I have never heard any complaints from either US or Israel about basic commodities moving through the tunnels. It is the missiles and other weapons that are not appreciated. It is hard to understand Egypt in regard to the barriers they are building. It would be much more cost effective to defeat tunnels by going house to house and destroying the tunnels by pumping in sea water or toxins. The trade in basic goods would seem to benefit both sides, and should take place above ground, not like gophers.
Gaza is Egypts baby,West Bank is Jordans let them take control and once they managed to cool the Palestinians down they can give them a state.
why dont they just kick Hamas out and let the Egyptian authorities take over, come on Egypt Gaza is yor baby not ours!!! BTW Jordan West Bank is yours too get the hint??? Take these steps and then you can decide if you want to relinquish Gaza and Westbank into a Palestine you are all Arabs after all. have some hookah, pilaf, hashish, and kababs.
For every single night of the 19 years Egypt ccupied Gaza (1948-1967), Egypt's army enforced a relentless dusk to dawn curfew on the Arabs of Gaza (they were NOT called Palestinians by ANYONE at that time; in fact the Egyptians called them "Felaheen" ..Arabic word for poor, lower class peasants). For all of those 19 years there was never a European or Islamic protest of that awful treatment of the Occupied and there was not a single UN Resolution condemning Egypt for its treatment of the people of Gaza.
When you talk about "Egypt" or "the Egyptians", it would be well to bear in mind who is running that country. What the population feels or thinks may well not be reflected by the words and actions of a regime that is not quite democratic (to put it mildly).
and not for anything else
Prior to 1967, Gaza was part of Egypt. After the 1967 war Israel found themselves with Gaza and the Sinai. As part of the peace agreement with Egypt the Sinai was returned but the Egyptians did not want to take back Gaza. This is historical fact.
