American killed, one other injured at Intel plant construction site

Suspicion workers lost consciousness due to poisonous gas; Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor investigating incident.

By Mijal Grinberg

United States citizen Greg McPhee, 58, fell to his death while working on the construction site of a new Intel plant in Israel's south Wednesday.

One other worker from Nazareth was seriously injured when the two fell from the building and landed in what police say was an empty water tank. Sources said the two may have breathed poisonous gas which caused them to lose consciousness and fall.

Co-workers pulled the two men from the tank. The injured man was taken to hospital in Ashkelon in a critical condition.

The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor said it was investigating the incident.

i worked on intel site in dublin ireland and it was a very safe site, if they did faint because of fumes the scaffold should have prevented them from falling,

Thank you all for your heartfelt emails. I just received the autopsy report on Greg. Yes he did die of hypoxy. In tank no 7. He did fall but his death was caused by the lack of proper air in the tank. I am told the youngman with him is ok. Dennyne

I had the chance to work with Greg in Israel. I've learned so much under his guidance, and still he had so much more to share. I miss dearly, both in and outside work. My thoughts are for his family and friends.

This contradicts the internal discussion on this, where it sounded like the first person went into a chamber to inspect something and some nitrogen gas knocked him out, the second tried to save him and was also knocked out. took a while to recover the two due to the difficulty getting into this chamber/vessle they were in. unsuccesful attmepts to revive teh first person. :( Intel is very big on safety so this will rattle some cages there.
