American Jewry kicks off annual conference, but guest star Obama cancels

Rahm Emanuel will instead join Netanyahu, Ambassador Michael Oren at three-day conference in Washington, D.C.

By Sara Miller Tags: Jewish World Barack Obama Jewish GA Israel news

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The annual General Assembly of the Jewish Federations of North America kicked off this year in an autumnal American capital with the disappointing news that the guest star, President Barack Obama, canceled at the last minute to attend a memorial service for the victims of a shooting at an army base in Texas last week. The president's chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, will be taking his place as keynote speaker on Tuesday.

Some 3,000 delegates from across the U.S., Canada and Israel have been arriving since Friday, filling the Marriott Hotel with called greetings, gossip, schmoozing and smatterings of Hebrew.

The security at the event was high even before the delegates arrived. With 24 hours to go, towering security guards with soft voices and imposing weaponry restricted access to the conference hall to delegates only.

The fundamental essence of the conference can be summed up quite simply: What on earth are we going to do now that the crash has taken a huge chunk of our money and Madoff has stolen most of the rest? But all is not lost.

The banners adorning the entrance to the conference all carry the same optimistic message: Anything is possible. Peace for Israel? Yes. Cohesion in the Jewish World? Absolutely. Saving the world? Sure, why not? There are discussions and debates with titles such as "Successful Management in Lean Times," and "Applying Business Skills to Jewish Work." The message: however hard the times are, there is a way ahead.

The meet also focuses on the usual topics concerning the largest and most influential Jewish community in the world: Iran, Israel's image in the world and, of course, the Goldstone commission report on the Gaza conflict and its allegations of war crimes.

Interestingly, there is a panel on Sunday on the role of Jews in Washington. This is a hot topic, given the central role played by Jews in the Obama administration - Emanuel and Obama's key aide David Axelrod are both of the faith - and the range of responses garnered by his immediate engagement with the settlement issue, both inside Israel and in the U.S. corridors of power.

Unlike the J Street conference in the same city last week, this one is pulling all the heavy hitters. Of the triumvirate of stars on the billing, Michael Oren, the Israeli ambassador to the United States, is the least impressive. He is the warm-up for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who would in turn have been upstaged by Obama. Instead, delegates will have to make do with Emanuel, and what he will tell the delegates is the subject of much speculation here.

These anti-Israel/Jewish pundits of hate demonstrate pavlovian behavior so perfectly. Just mention the word Jew or Israel and their vile drool fills talkbacks with upsurd fantasies, never ever dealing with the reality of the other side. It's a process- drooling, rabies and a miserable death- perhaps you can find a vaccine for them doc!

J., you're mistaken. Obama cancelled after the date for memorial for the slain For Hood soldiers was announced. Take a look at this paper! Obama couldn't be anyplace else but at that memorial. All the country's flags are flying at half mast. It's a very important here. Incidentally, like the overwhelming majority of American Jews I voted for Obama and will vote for him again...

Albert Einstein said in his last days of life: ?Religions are childish Fairy Tales?. It is mostly false and negative and sets people against each other. It's very sectarian. There is no place for it in modern civilisation. We need minds to be opened and polished and furnished with the great wonderfulness of science and knowledge, not poisoned with the redundant mindless idiotic sewage of horrible ignorant stone age savages.

Would they have refused to reschedule if Obama had asked them? Obama had already arranged to not meet Netanyahu at the event. Rham Emanuel is a man much more like Netanyahu, but even more ruthless and nasty. That might be an interesting meeting.

On one hand, the calamitous incident in Texas is a valid reason for President Obama not to attend the General Assembly of Jewish Federations. But perhaps it is not entirely the reason, and may be face-saving, in a sense. To me, at least, it defies logic to think that a person such as Obama, who was married to his wife by the Rev. Jeremiah Wright (who detests Israel and Jews in general); whose daughters were baptized by Rev. Wright; and who attended Wright's church for more than 20 years could lose much love for Israel or Jews in general. But that is just one man's opinion.

"A person flipped out under what must have been serious stress dealing with people undergoing difficult readjustment after combat, and the only thing you see is his religion." Consider THIS, genius! There are in excess of 1 million active military in the U.S., hundreds of thousands of whom are in the battle zones. Of those, 99% are non-muslim. Yet, to you it is purely coincidental that this terrorist was Muslim. Who are you trying to kid, calling ME the "bigot" while spewing your inane Jew-hating "Observations" on this site 7 days per week. Fact is, this Islamic terrorist was never even in the battlezone. He was always Stateside, nice and safe, worshipping his "religion of peace" in the same mosque as those 19 "peaceful" hijackers of 9/11. YOU, my "friend", are the bigot. YOU are the one who spends every day of his life on an Israeli newspaper's website spewing your hatred of Jews. We Jews don't 'hang out' on Islamic websites spewing our hate. We have more important things to do.

Yes. The Arabs and other Islamic fanatics hate us and attack us every chance they get. The mere fact that they are bad guys doesn't make Israel good guys. We need to bring our troops and funds home and worry about our own problems. Let the entire Middle East stew in its own ugly juices and work out its own problems. We have problems of our own right here.

You are factually correct, no doubt about it. I was honestly not looking for "the bad," but I used to be an editor (undistinguished), and in my personal opinion had the article simply stated that Mr. Oren, the third of the major speakers, would be "setting the stage" or "warming the audience up" for the Prime Minister, it might have been better. Then again, there's sure to be a good reason that I'm no longer an editor. Incidentally, ma'am, I sincerely appreciate your taking the time to read my post and commenting on it.

"I guess Obama noticed how Netanyahu shat upon him after all." [Lincoln] That's right, Lincoln, just completely ignore the article, other than its headline. Just completely dismiss the possibility that maybe, just maybe, Obama's decision to attend a memorial service for the victims of Fort Hood takes precedence over a political conference. BTW, inasmuch as the Fort Hood shooting was at the hands of an Islamic terrorist (Gee, what a surprise, eh?), it was not Netanyahu who "shat" upon anyone. Rather, it was yet another member of that wonderful, peaceful, tolerant religion of Islam who "shat" upon 13 Americans. Any inane prolific criticism of that? Of course not. You don't have time for silly little matters like that. You're just a full-time Israel-basher masquerading as some elite expert on history, international diplomacy, military strategy, aerospace engineering, warfare, etc. Remarkable how such a super-genius like you has so much time on his hands.

What a shocker! Not. Obama just couldn't stand to be in the room with so many Jews at the same time without the name J Street. After all, a good Jew to him is a self-hating Jew who wants Israel to take the blame for everything since the Alamo. Dignified Jewish business heads and community leaders were too independent for him, so he sends his top Self-Hating Jew in his place. I'm sure that Rahm will have some new ideas about a 3 way division of Jerusalem this time. Barry Zornberg

In my oppinion, the Texas incident has allowed Obama a face saving 'get out' from attending. At this difficult point in his relationship with the Palastinian groups / Arabs in general it could have been seen as being innapropriate for him to be obviously favouring one group over the other. I may be off the mark, but it does add up.
