Ahmadinejad: Upcoming nuclear meet in Vienna is 'test' for West
Iranian president: Sanctions will hurt West more than Tehran; Clinton: World won't wait forever for nuclear proof.
By Reuters Tags: Iran Iran nuclear Israel newsIranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Sunday that the October 19meeting with world powers in Vienna over the country's disputed nuclear program was a test for further "fruitful" cooperation, state television reported.
"The October 19 meeting is a test for fruitful cooperation [with the West] in the future," Ahmadinejad told state television.
"Failure of the meeting and imposing sanctions on Iran would hurt the West more than Iran."
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said earlier Sunday that international powers would not wait forever for Iran to prove it was not developing nuclear bombs.
British Foreign Secretary David Miliband, with whom Clinton met in London, said Iran would never have a better opportunity to establish normal ties with the rest of the world but that it had to start behaving like a "normal country".
Iran agreed at a meeting with six world powers in Geneva on October 1 to allow United Nations experts access to a newly disclosed uranium enrichment plant near the city of Qom.
Clinton said the meeting was a constructive beginning but added that it had to be followed by action.
"The international community will not wait indefinitely for evidence that Iran is prepared to live up to its international obligations," Clinton said at a news conference.
Iran suggested on Sunday that it may embark on further refining of uranium - comments likely to add to concern among Western powers, which suspect Tehran is seeking to develop nuclear bombs. Iran denies the charge.
Negotiations are due on October 19 in Vienna on a proposal to send Iranian uranium abroad for processing and then return it to Tehran.
The Islamic state has repeatedly rejected demands to halt its sensitive nuclear work, despite three rounds of UN sanctions since 2006.
Progress in the Geneva talks was seen as heading off calls for an immediate round of tougher sanctions in the near future.
Britain and the United States are part of a group of six world powers seeking to defuse the row with Iran over its nuclear program. Miliband said Iran had to earn the right to be trusted on its nuclear program.
"I think that Iran's history of covert, secret programs ... explains why the international community does not have confidence in the Iranian regime's protestations about the purely peaceful aspects or purely peaceful purposes of their nuclear program," he said.
Clinton criticized the Iranian leadership for the way it had handled protests over a presidential election in June.
"With Iran it is tragic that a country with such a great history, with so much to give to the rest of the world, is so afraid of their own people," she told reporters.
"The way that they are utilizing secret prisons, and detentions and show trials, is a reflection of the discontent that they know people feel toward the current leadership."
Her comments follow a report on Saturday that an Iranian court has sentenced three people to death over street unrest that erupted after the election in June and links to exiled opposition groups.
ISNA news agency, citing the head of the publication relations office of the Tehran provincial court, did not identify those condemned, giving only their initials.
It was the first official statement of death sentences in connection with the presidential poll, which the opposition says was rigged to secure hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's re-election, and the huge opposition protests that followed.

The 'west' already signaled they will wait as long as it takes for Iran to become a nuclear state. The US has zero intention of stopping them.
People forget easily. Hilary was the butt of endless jokes during most her husband's tenure in office. She was a laughing stock as the first lady. Now she's got a big, undeserved title, compliments largely of neocon jews. She insists that Iran must behave like a "normal country." I don't hear anyone arguing that we need a "normal," not to mention, qualified person in the office she occupies. I repeat, Mrs. Clinton was a joke as the first lady. She is a joke now as the Secretary of State. Why does the media take her so seriously? That was merely a rhetorical question. I already know the answer.
"More obligations ? ......Let`s talk more...More and more obligations ? Let`s talk more and more. Till when ? Till the BOMB," Nora in Tel Aviv President Ahmadinejad is using the same technique that Menachem Begin perfected. "Negotiate, negotiate, negotiate, even to the year 2000" Menachem in 1979. And the Jews will keep "negotiating"(stalling) until they steal all the Palestinian land. Salaam/Shalom
I agree with you. But have you thought what Israel will experience an hour, six hours, a day, a week, a month, a year after that strike? Or for that matter, when Iran definitely assembles its bomb a few years down the line anyway?
The time for a strike is NOW! before its too late. Time to cripple the evil!
You claim that Israel must be sorted out. The London Underground Bombings, the Extreme Islamic cells that have been located and shattered by the UK law enforcement has nothing to do with Israel. Once those same groups manage to lay their hands on a NBC device, be assured it will be used. That old chap is where the problem remains. The Israeli Palestinian problem cannot be solved through the good channels of either the US,UK,EU,Russia,China,India or the UN. Its up to the local leaders. Iran, is a clear and present danger. Not only for the ME. Also for Europe. Israel will no doubt have no choice but to act accordingly. That is what Ms.Clinton knows only too well. Please do not give us a story about fly over zones and a bunch of silly statistics. Israel has the sovereign right to protect itself, even if it means launching ICBM·s. Good night from chilly yet to snow Swiss Alps.
Israel should send to hell all those countries and people who give ""lessons" Lets face it Nobody loves not just israel, Jews all together, this is a fact for hundreds of years, brought by the Church. If all those individuals will have any decency they shoud abstain to use any device(cell phones, etc etc) ot any medicine invented by a Jew. They are nothing hypocrites, and always jealous of Jews.
Did this fundamental principle of jurisdiction ever occur to you, Mrs. Clinton, an educated law school student? Obviosly not.
America have the interest of overthrowing the iranian regime and to steal their natural resources. And guess what! They will frame it on israel! If Americas war goes wrong they will try to blame it on israel and the jews.
gazza has a border with egypt why don't they open their border to the palestinians why israel is expected to do for a group that is unwilling to recognize it's right to exist and sends rockets indescriminetly to its cities. No peace can be made with people that want peace and coexistence peace can not be made with a MOTHER that says she takes pride in her son because he blew himself up in a bus with 50 other people.which brings me to the reason Israel does not allow palestinians from gazza to work in israel or the come to israel.20 years back there were 20.000gazzans working in israel.no more.
michael stop sroting out outhers /the mess your imperialism made in the middle east is remembered.the jews deserve a homeland and a strong one as befitted in a very dangerous neighborhood.Israel will not allow anyone to take away its independence and your views are of no importance to israelis or anyone who looks at the middle east without the leftist european dogma that israel is bad.this dogma is untrue and is a mantra by farleft european for some time now.
OK, but when it comes to lifting the siege on Gaza, or ending the occupation, well, in this case we'll wait forever...
It does not matter as "all the world" may do is initiate "tough" sanctions which will be worthless anyhow
And do absolutely nothing. Russia and China have the final say not US and EU. Russia and China would have no issues whatsoever in collateral damage or killing women and children in defense of their national interests.
The Zionist occupation and apartheid (in Orwellian doublespeak: "Israel-Palestine CONFLICT") can last forever, Israel can have nuclear weapons and commit all sorts of war crimes every two years, but Mrs Clinton wants Iran to behave like a "normal country". What a hypocrite!
What happened to innocent till proven guilty?
better recognize Israel as The Jewish State. Maybe we can send all the Palestinians to The Islamic state of Iran... As for Irans nuclear facilities, Israel better start kicking some Iranian butt before this gets out of hand.
who gave her the authority to speak in the name of the world?
This was sorted out, but one Nobel Peace Winner started an Intifada instead of finalizing a peace deal. Yes beleive it or not,it's not Israel who is stopping peaceit's the Pals, they rather have another Intifada. I think Obama should be proud to share his Prize with a wonderful man like Arafat. I know Obama didn't nominate himself, and was shocked by winning it, but deep down does he think he actually deserve it? Start with Iran and his buddy Ajad, get something done there, than maybe the Pals wll be reasonable. You see Israel has made peace with Jordan and Eygpt, with a partner things can get doen, but right know Israel is all alone and waiting for a partner.
Clinton says: "U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Sunday the international community would not wait indefinitely for Iran to show that it is prepared to meet its international obligations." But can she say the same thing about the endless Middle East peace talks? If she's fed-up with Iran's delay tactics, is she also fed-up with Netanyaho's delay tactics? Would she even have the courage to say this publicly?
I can't believe Clinton is still threatening Iran if they don't bow down. Stupid. It will never work with a self respecting nation. It will be a favour to the West if Iran does not have a nuclear weapon - with Israel threatening them every day and most of their neighbours having nuclear weapons.
Apologies to Brian de Palma.
Forever is a long, long, long time. Barack Hussein Obama won't wait forever, but at least until the end of his second term.
Every time anyone tries to sort out the Middle East, people say 'Israel needs to be sorted out'. But somehow Israel and its supporters always manage to organise it, so that Israel is put off to be dealt with until everything else has been sorted out. And since everything else is, of course, never sorted out, nobody ever gets round to the Israel/Palestine issue, the main issue in the whole Middle East, and that's left to fester. That, of course, suits the settler land grabbers but nobody else and guarantees there will never be Middle East Peace. Remember how Israel/ Palestine was going to be sorted out after Al Qaeda. Then it was going to be sorted out after Iraq. Now it's going to be sorted out after Iran. NO. Nobody's really worried about Iran except Israel and AIPAC. Leave Iran. Sort out Israel FIRST this time. Then the rest will be easy.
The IAEA inspectors won't get to see all there is to see at Qom, and the Fatah-Hamas deal in Egypt will fall through.
....More obligations ? ......Let`s talk more...More and more obligations ? Let`s talk more and more. Till when ? Till the BOMB, stupid!
