ADL: Petraeus wrong to link anti-U.S. attitude to Mideast peace
Abraham Foxman says Israel is seen as the problem whenever the Mideast conflict comes into focus.
By Natasha Mozgovaya and Haaretz Correspondent Tags: ADL Israel news Middle East peaceThe Anti-Defamation League (ADL) criticized as "dangerous and counterproductive" the Senate testimony of General David Petraeus in which he blamed "insufficient progress" in resolving the ongoing Israeli-Arab conflict as a significant impediment to achieving U.S. goals in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan and Iran, and for encouraging "anti-American sentiment."
Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement in response to the general's March 16 testimony before the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee:
"The assumptions Gen. Petraeus presented to the Senate Armed Services Committee wrongly attribute 'insufficient progress' in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and 'a perception of U.S. favoritism for Israel' as significantly impeding the U.S. military mission in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan and in dealing with the Iranian influences in the region. It is that much more of a concern to hear this coming from such a great American patriot and hero."
The ADL chief added that the "General's assertions lead to the illusory conclusion that if only there was a resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the U.S. could successfully complete its mission in the region."
"Gen. Petraeus has simply erred in linking the challenges faced by the U.S. and coalition forces in the region to a solution of the Israeli-Arab conflict, and blaming extremist activities on the absence of peace and the perceived U.S. favoritism for Israel," Foxman wrote, adding that "this linkage is dangerous and counterproductive."
"Whenever the Israeli-Arab conflict is made a focal point, Israel comes to be seen as the problem. If only Israel would stop settlements, if only Israel would talk with Hamas, if only Israel would make concessions on refugees, if only it would share Jerusalem, everything in the region would then fall into line."

Petraeus is preparing excuse for his ineffective military activities in Afganistan. High-ranking general is incapable and that is the reason. I can assure you that majority of Taliban fighters know nothing about israeli- palestinian conflict, and they dont get a s... about it. And finally they dont like Arabs at all.
Yes, you are clearly correct. Petraeus doesn't really know anything about US enemies in the middle east. Why should we believe him? We should instead believe unnamed members of Congress. They know better. They wouldn't tell us wrong, even if they are much beholden to AIPAC and Israel. It comes down to who you believe. Petraeus is obviously untrustworthy. Everybody knows that.
One correction: The US Marine Corps was actually founded in 1775. But you are correct in that they did play a part in defeating the pirates opperating out of Tripoli.
"I believe that Israel believes that it has a 'manifest destiny' to create a 'greater Israel'. . . ." That is because you are basing your beliefs on your own prejudice rather than on fact. How many times since 1967 has Israel offered to give the West Bank either back to Jordan or to the PA? Please tell me, because I lost count a while back. Oh, but the way, most of the Arabs can hardly be called indigenous to the area. Most are from families that came from what today is Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, etc. Their arrival mirrored the first Zionist settlers.
The PA has twice turned down a chance for peace and for an Arab state. Arafat was offered 95% of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, with the remaining 5% compensated for with land within the green line. He said no. Abbas turned down a better offer of 98% plus land within the green line. So the US should bend it's foreign policy so as a nation we can cowtow to a bunch of whiners who do not want a settlement? Just because the Arabs do not want to move forward, the rest of the world needs to move backwards? And concerning East Jerusalem, since Israel took the land in a defensive war (Jordan did the attacking in 1967), annexing the area is perfectly legal. Politically, maybe yes and mayb no. But it is legal.
Actually, several members of Congress, with more experience dealing with the Mid-East than Petreaus, have effectively disputed Petreaus' conclusions. Of course the Arab world expresses support for the Palestinians, but they do not mean it. Note the hundreds of millions of dollars in unpaid pledges. Note the oppression of so-called Palestinians in other Arab countries. Petreaus appears to believe anything he is told. He has a bit to learn.
As Peraeus says, almost all in the Arab world express support for the Palestinians. But do they mean it? Look at the hundreds of millions of dollars in aid the Arabs promised the PA, of which only a small percentage was sent. Look how "Palestinians" living in other Arab countries are treated as third-class citizens, if they are granted any citizen rights at all. Most of the violence in the Mid-East today is Arab against Arab in conflicts that have nothing to do with Israel. But they all use anti-Israel, or anti-Semitism, as a rallying point. When two Arab factions fighting each other call each other "Zionist," I stop taking them seriously. The Arabs have been fighting each other for centuries. The only difference now is that they use Israel as an excuse. Should Israel make peace with the PA, the Arabs will find some other excuse to fight.
With the underlying purpose of capitalizing on anti-Semitism, and anything it can construe as such, for the advancement of Zionist goals in Israel. In this case, with nothing of substance to suggest anti-Semitism, the ADL lifts its skirt to reveal its real purpose, as that mentioned above. Foxman even has the audacity to suggest that the facts Petraeus presented are"general assertions"! Newsflash for Foxman: You don't get to be where Petraeus is at by acting on "assertions".
The perception that the US supports the Israeli policy of denying indigenous non-Israelis, in the occupied territories, full participation in the political process of formulating the policies and laws that are used by Israel to control and colonize those occupied territories. Many Americans are beginning to realize that Israel, "the light unto the world" is treating the non-Israelis in the same sad way the US treated native American Indians in the 19th and early 20th centuries. I believe that Israel believes that it has a "manifest destiny" to create a "greater Israel" from the Med. sea to the Jordanian border with the Indigenous Arabs/Semites relegated to several non-contiguous tribal-areas/refugee-camps/ reservations with no representation in the Israeli government controlling those reservations.
It is not about 200 acres in Jerusalem, but about a longstanding US policy of biased and irrational support for Israel to the detriment of the Palestinians. The Arabs and the Muslim community of 1.4 billion identify with the Palestinians, and see an injustice to the Palestinians as an injustice to them. They are bitter and resentful towards the US and a good portion of this resentment can be traced back to Israel. BTW I am not talking about extreme elements and terrorists, I am talking about the average Muslim and the sentiments on the Arab street. Last but not least the annexation of East Jerusalem is illegal and unacceptable to the entire international community..well except to Israel.
So does that mean that Gen. Petraeus falls under 'anti-semite'?? Or why is Abe Foxman commenting on what Gen. Petraeus briefed the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee??? He should think twice before he goes after Petraeus.
Since WWII, the US has lost every military engagement it has undertaken.....Korea, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Rwanda, et al.... Is it because the US is infected by poor military leadership? ill-motivated soldiers? poorly trained soldiers? dumb military staff? too much technology? hired mercinaries? Pertaeus invested a new reason for US military failure...yup...it's the Jews and Israel. General Petraeus is a military failure.
The problems of the USA with the moslem world, started when Thomas Jefferson refused to pay for the right of passage of American Shipping by the coasts of North Africa. It sparked a war and that's when the USMC was founded...It's till now in their anthem-:"from the halls of Montezuma TO THE SANDS OF TRIPOLI...".During WWll,the USA had to get rid of the pro-nazi Shah, replace him with Rezah Pahlevi and it costed a lot of treasure.Later the USA had to get rid of a KGB surrogate Mossadegh...The takeover of the USA Embassi by the iranian terrorists under the leadership of ahmadinejad, during the carter years, had nothing to do with Israel...The arabs use the name of Israel as a boogeyman for all their problems...THEY HATE THE USA,BECAUSE THEY HATE DEMOCRACY AND FREEDOM
The USA does not know how to fight against insurgency. This is a repeat of Vietnam. Was Israel responsible for the way the USA lost the war in Vietnam.
"If onlyHamas would stop killing inocents, if only hamas would co-opersate with the PA, if only hamas would stop makeing irrational demande before even sitting down to talk...." IF ONLY
If the Neo-cons (like Foxman) think they can still tell the military what to think and what to do, boy are they are in for a rude surprise. Right now in the United States, animosity is at a record high against Lobbyists and Special Interests pushing their way around like bulls in china stores. On the other hand, Gen. Petraeus has wider popularity and support among the American people than any politician from any party right now. Foxman bit off WAY more than he can chew going after Petraeus. Dumb move. This is seriously going to come back and bite Israel in the backside.
And laid the truth flat out in front of Senators. I would love to see some of these guys dare to dispute General Petraeus Opinion.
... may have finally seen that Afghanistan is always going to be Afghanistan and all the nation building nonsense will disappear the minute he leaves. Not wanting to look like a failure, he is now in the process of stocking up his alibi cabinet. Israel seems convenient ...
...to stick to it's own turf on american soil and not stick it's nose in overseas affairs. otherwise it will not be wrong to wonder on their divided loyalties. of course Mr Foxman can make aliya and pick on the israeli government once in israel. but the pay will probably be less. of course ADL people make their living from their being alarmists.
I hate to be the one to say this. Use Common Sense all of you!
....nowadays. He is so busy 24/7 with studying the news about Obama and Israel, that he won't have anymore time to follow anti-Semitic and racist incidents overseas. The true Jew haters surely won't mind....
It is fact. May be Mr. Foxman should make a good use of his US passport by traveling rest of the world and learn. His knee jerk reaction on everything related to Israel, mapping them to anti-Semitism, made him a joke. I like Haaretz and this is my source of news for entire mid east.
The mood on the street in the US increasingly desires full disengagement of the US from the region.
"If only Israel would stop settlements, if only Israel would talk with Hamas, if only Israel would make concessions on refugees, if only it would share Jerusalem, everything in the region would then fall into line." Abe, the entire situation in the Middle East would be greatly improved if Israel would take the steps you so kindly enumerated. Thanks for your help chubby.
There is no bigger rallying cry for the Arab and Muslim world than the Palestinian issue. Foxman is simply living in fantasy land if he doesn't want to admit it. Like it or not, it is 100% true.
I recommend he research the CIA's Bin Laden Unit's former head Michael Scheuer. Like read his books Imperial Hubris and Marching Toward Hell. The motivations of Islamist groups and grievances of Muslims of the world are clear. Unquestioning US support for Israel's illegal occupation of the West bank is a major issue, so are the latest occupations of two other Muslim lands; Iraq and Afghanistan. And so is US support for the dictators of the Arab world. Foxman is either selective of the facts or an ignoramous
I seriously doubt that the terrorist groups,Taliban and al Queda, are concerned about less than two hundred acres of Jerusalem. They are more concerned about their survival against the onslaught of US troops and air power in Iraq and Afghanistan. The good general is more concerned about his keeping in line with the administration's rationale and its policies in the management of the war. These are, unquestionably, serious and consequential. However if one were to ascribe such importance of these concerns to these terrorist groups, the issue of the Jewish State's existence would be far more influential than the limited real estate in Israel's capital.
War College postgraduate, I fully support Petraeus statement. Having such a strong denying from the ADL, Israel servant in the US, is only supporting that he touched the point !
Somebody please muzzle this guy. Since when is he an expert in U.S. security and armed forces matters? General Patraeus is a patriot and a hero, which is exactly why what he says should be taken seriously...not this fool Foxman, which serves the Israeli agenda and not the Americans in harms way. Lose this guy!
