Absence of Iran official raises doubts over nuclear talks
U.S. Ambassador to UN Bolton: The discussions with Iran appear to have come to a stop.
By The Associated PressIran's chief nuclear negotiator has not come to New York this week as expected, raising doubts about talks on Tehran's nuclear ambitions, U.S. envoy to the United Nations John Bolton said on Monday.
"The discussions with Iran appear to have come to a stop - in the sense that Mr (Ali) Larijani, whom we expected in New York, is not here," Bolton told reporters.
The United States, which gave Larijani a visa for the trip, has repeatedly delayed pushing for UN sanctions on Iran while Larijani held preliminary talks with European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana. But Bolton said time was running out.
Solana said on Friday that a planned meeting last week had been postponed because Larijani needed more time to build consensus in his own country if he was to give a positive answer.
The United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China have offered to negotiate with Iran on a package of economic and political inducements if Tehran verifiably suspends uranium enrichment, which the major powers believe is intended for nuclear weapons development.
Iran insists its nuclear activities are only to produce electricity to meet burgeoning energy needs. It also insists that it has a legal right to enrich uranium.
An EU official told Reuters no meeting between Solana and Larijani has been scheduled for this week so far, adding that EU and Iranian officials have been in daily contact.
President George W. Bush, who has accused Iran of stalling for time so it can advance its nuclear program, is expected to discuss Iran in his speech to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday morning. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, an anti-western hard-liner, is to address the assembly on Tuesday night.
Major power foreign ministers will discuss next step toward Iran at a meeting on Tuesday evening.
The UN Security Council demanded that Iran halt uranium enrichment by August 31 but Tehran ignored the deadline and Bolton said the United States intends to press for sanctions.
Some Western diplomats view Ahmadinejad and Larijani as competitors within the Iranian leadership, regarding the negotiator as more pragmatic. One diplomat suggested Larijani may be waiting for the president to leave before he arrives.
"Our assessment is that Larijani genuinely wants to try and get some form of uranium suspension in place and get the negotiations going" but it is questionable whether that can be achieved given the apparent factionalism in Tehran on the nuclear issue, a European diplomat said.

Some responded to my post above (#13). One of them has "fool" as part of his chosen name. No further questions. Another said Iran would only get us back if we attacked. That is explained in the blog I mentioned: http://www.neutroniran.blogspot.com There it quotes Machiavelli?s ?The Prince.? In Chapter 3 Machiavelli wrote that, ?The injury we do to a man must be such that we need not fear his vengeance.? So THAT'S what we need to do to Iran. That is ALL we need to deal with Iran in a way that avoids their retaliation. Think about it. Message to fools: Learn to read.
Thanks for your message, Ronald. As someone who posts more antiwar messages than most, I think you're a little unkind to call me an Armchair "General". As for your other comments, you're certainly right about me being unemployable - I've worked for myself since 1982 and I'm now far too bolshie to fit into any organisation other than my own. And, no, I have no intention of taking a break from Talkback. It's fun.
With all due respect, why are you so sure that Israel will not use the bomb first ? Is it because Israel has a long history of respect of human rights & world peace ? You know what your problem is ? You think that all the people around you have the same standard of values as yours .... believing in brutal force as the only solution to all problems, justifying the means by the end, lying to themselves & to the world etc.. etc.. Facts are that Iran is not developping a nuclear bomb. If you think the contrary you are welcome to proove it. UNTIL THEN IRAN IS PRETENDING ITS LEGAL RIGHT & ISRAEL IS NOT ABIDING BY THE LAWS. IT IS AS SIMPLE AS THAT !
Should iran get wacked , keep your teetotal stand high for there will always be in the ME an other dictator from the arab league pulling the heat aroud him
Who are you trying to kid with your military 'knowledge'? Unemployed/unemloyable you may be, but I wager you have never served in any military, let alone a modern hi-tech army; its a bit more complicated than working a PC! belittleing Mr. Bolton's moustache & glasses won't do much for world peace. Bringing ahmedinajad & his henchmen down a notch, together with the rest of the loony jihadists might make a difference. As for Bush/Blair et al: I couldn't care less. The economy races ahead, I've got a decent salary & a new car, so who cares what these guys do, so long as Iran can't directly target me or my friends & relatives in Israel (sorry, the Zionist entity). Have a nice day & try to give the ranting rhetoric a rest for a day or 2; you will feel much better! After all, I doubt any relevant politicians are tuning in...
"Accident do happen , the west will regard your comments and make the effort to reduce to maximum Iran`s capacity missiles on Iran ground, Site defence perfection will also be a priority that the west will regard based on your notes of the dimona sittig duck when the heat goes up" Thanks for the chuckle,Joseph. And no doubt Iran has similarly been studying my threefold plan of attack against America and Israel.
Mr. Kamil, The clear difference between Israel and its neighbors, including your country, is that even though it might have the bomb (nobody has ever proved it is so, Israel has never recognized it has it), it would never use it, unless it is first attacked... Maybe that's the problemn, maybe Israel should've used it long ago, or maybe it should use it now, before it is too late... Israel has never signed the non-proliferation of mass destruction weapons treaty. Iran signed it long ago. And that's another difference. You have to be VERY NAIVE to believe that Iran is only researching on uranium enrichment in order to use it only for civilan purposes...Lies, lies and more lies...
the report Today Online Editorial: Israel can help in the fight against nuclear Iran Responses: 29 i will keep in mind that your starting point is the arab peace initiative , meanwhile read my post on the report above
You should not consider yourself as a westerner if you really believe that Israel is your home and it is the Promised Land. You are in the Middle East now. The package offered by the Arab league to Israel to restore full diplomatic and trade relation with the Jewish state providing it withdrawals to 1967 borders and the refugees return back to their homes. Israel can join NATO to safe guard its security, The Arabs including Iran then reduce their armies. No WMD in the Middle East, only peace and trade.
Rep. Charles Rangel, (D-N.Y.) was asked what he thought about the President. (Mr. Rangel is a Black American Congressman). "Well," he said, "I really think he shatters the myth of white supremacy once and for all." ***** Note that I don't necessarily believe in, or agree with, what Mr. Rangel is saying about Bush; I'm (as the Pope would say ...) just quoting him!
Accident do happen , the west will regard your comments and make the effort to reduce to maximum Iran's capacity missiles on Iran ground, Site defence perfection will also be a priority that the west will regard based on your notes of the dimona sittig duck when the heat goes up
But for us westerners , we do size up Lie , Abuse , and the fog surrounding what seems reasonable to Diktats under dictators , It is called western objectivism moreover when the call for prayers in Iran starts with the word "peasant" wishing upgraded technology under spined excuses such as rights or defense , i guess their proud defiance restrained them to comply with world legitimate concerns .
Don't rely too much on the lies of the manufacturers of these so-called missile defence systems. The test results are pretty crappy. Sometimes the incoming missile has a beacon in it to make it easy for the defence and they STILL miss. They also find it difficult to distinguish between the actual missile and decoys released to counter defensive systems. They're also lousy at dealing with clusters of incoming missiles. Dimona is a sitting duck.
Same as for Iraq scuds-missiles , mainly material damage with one old man passing by heart attack , since than the anti ballistic missiles technology hsa been perfected to the point were they could hit Iran missiles over iraq , jordan or syria just pray that for no accidental fall over bahrain. May be you're a muslim therefore to much sensitive , so try to keep the comments rational, without sick verbal wishes or unknowledgeable comparisons
The US have been lying to the world regarding the presumed arms of mass destruction in Irak, they've been lying to the world about the responsibility for the crimes committed on 9/11 & they are lying now about the presumed military nuclear program of Iran. The US are busy fabricating fake reports about the Iranian nuclear bombs & insist on ignoring the reports done by the international observers, DOESN'T THAT REMIND YOU OF IRAK ?
Joseph, Most of the IAEA inspectors work for Israeli secret service Mossad, you know very well that Iran?s program is not military. Yet you insist on bombs and wars. The Iranian people are very proud they will not give legitimate right as guaranteed by NPT, yet they are reasonable and would be happy to address the international community concerns
If Hezbollah could make 500,000 Israelis sleep in Bomb shelters for 33 days how many Israelis would you think will rest in peace Permanently as a result of an Iranian response to an attack?
I noticed that your article was by one Shmuel Ben Yehoshua, so I didn't expect too much of it, other than a blind urging to bomb the crap out of Iran. I wasn't disappointed. Bad news, Ethan, is that America and Israel don't get to use their nukes to solve this problem. This would be an act of the sort of terrorist state you believe Iran to be. It would also establish a very bad precedent, and it would slaughter countless innocent Iranians. And long-term it would simply fan global hatred of America and Israel. Sorry, Ethan, back to the drawing board. Why not rely on good ole nuclear deterrence? It seems to work remarkably well.
of the contract that iran negotiated . The world wants to help iran with its energy needs but not with the atomic bomb , Iran defiance to the world may be based as you say on legitmacy or force , still there is a breach of contract and a UN deadline violation , You buy jewelry , you pay good money after you realize it's fake , the guy doesn't want to give you back money and has no real ring or neckless for you ,while his friends gather aroud you ,would you tell it's his right to trick you ,how would you feel , what would you do , Are you for or against fraud .
Here's an interesting approach to how to deal with the Iranians. Tough, but it is the only proposal that would get ALL of the hundreds of nuclear sites in Iran--- http://www.neutroniran.blogspot.com
Change Mr. Bolton. The man is obsessed with hate to the extent that he cannot make since. His attitude does not suit a diplomat and its time for Mr. Bush to offer John Bolton an early retirement package.
Usual question, US Citizen - when the USA has dropped all of its bombs from a safe height, how do you think the Iranians will respond to this aggression? Remember, on most board games your opponent gets to move his pieces too.
The Iranians have been lying to the UN for 18 years about their nuke program. They have directly threatened to "wipe Israel off the map", which is a violation of the UN charter. I beleive the Iranians intend to use a nuclear weapon, after they develop it. Thus, they need to be stopped now. The current government is headed by nut cases. The only country able stop them is the US, and so I would support my country taking the necessary action to do so.
There appears to be a dead white rat attached to his face under his nose.
He's just doing whats best for AIPAC. Their little monkeyboy is well trained. Wierd how Bush gets here and fighter jets fly all over the place...on 9/11 there wasn't a one to be found in the skies.
Your comment should have been send directly to Solana. Negotiating with carpets dealers who knows that you are not a buyer look strange to me. The Iranians got large part of their brains occupied by a calculation machine and they don't sell cheap. Could anyone offer them more then what they are stealing from their own people? Do the Iranian people get information and know the accounts of all the nuclear activities?
The Iranians are only enriching uranium to the level required for fuel. They are respecting the international law & they are allowing the international observers to check all their sites. For its cooperation Iran will be sanctioned ! Israel has the nuclear bomb, it does not respect international law nor does it allow anyone to visit its sites. For its lack of compliance with any regulations Israel is not even blamed ! Mr Bolton you need to change your eyeglasses, it seems that you have a sight problem !
Too much contact with Iran to the point they became double agents (poodles)for iran without their consent or knowledge , Ahmediabuser and Larijani like a criminal married couple refering to their parteners in crime while playing a pr game for public opinion when in violation of UN dealine. A driver burning the red light stop , telling the officer that he will fix the car's brakes while trying to negotiate the ticket , a simple fine turning to corruption while the wife's driver adjusting her fake boobs and their kids pucking at the officer .
Since Iran is exercising its legitimate right to process the full nuclear cycle, it should not bother with obtaining approval from US or anyone else, Europe can keep its incentive, for years they supported the regime of Saddam Hussain even though they knew he used WMD against Iran and his own people. Iran has the scientific minds and the technology to be self sufficient. It also has the means to defend it self.
When you've been dealt an incredibly bad hand, Dave, you tend to want to believe that somehow there's a way you come out of the game ahead. Don't be too unkind to Solana. There's nothing that can be done to stop Iran's march to becoming a nuclear power without bringing the house down on everyone.
Then we will witness the blessed marriage of the speechwriter and the autocue, which provides Americans with the illusion that they have a President with a brain. What I prefer is the unscripted George, when we actually see what's inside the man's brain, and, folks, the answer is "custard". "I think?tide turning?see, as I remember?I was raised in the desert, but tides kind of?it's easy to see a tide turn?did I say those words?"?Washington, D.C., June 14, 2006 Read, realise and shudder, America.
It was clear to everyone, except Solana, that he was being strung along Iranian style. They sadistically held out a carrot on a stick by constantly setting up "promising" meetings. He foolishly jumped higher and higher as they kept raising the carrot by canceling at the last minute or changing locations. This is classic Iranian "negotiating". The more he jumped the more his spirit was being broken until he collapsed and gave in to their humiliation. This is their technique and winning formula for turning world leaders into their personal dhimmhis (slaves to Muslims). The more they commit, the bigger the investment and the deeper they got sucked in. It’s no different than hooking someone on drugs or gambling.
