Eighty nurses at well baby clinics in the Arab sector received pink slips this week. The nurses, employed by the public health society, were laid off by the Health Ministry due to streamlining and "structural changes".
The 80 nurses were employed in a project aimed to reduce the high infant mortality rate in the Arab sector. Health Ministry officials said Wednesday that the project will be continued despite the lay offs.
Jihad Akel, a member of the Histadrut labor federation leadership, demanded that Health Minister Dan Naveh prevent the dismissal of the nurses, "so as to prevent damaging this special social project in the Arab sector."
The chairman of the nurses federation, Ilana Cohen, also criticized the dismissals on Wednesday, saying that the Finance Ministry made a callous decision that will damage a vital service.
