The cabinet on Monday unanimously approved a proposal to classify 44 communities near the Gaza Strip as "front-line" towns, giving them benefits including preference in Defense Ministry tenders.

The proposal was initiated by Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz.

The communities that will be affected by the new status are located up to 7 kilometers away from the security fence surrounding the Gaza Strip.

Until now, only the southern town of Sderot, which has frequently been targeted in Palestinian rocket attacks, has recently been classified as a front-line community.
