21 left-wing activists arrested in violent East Jerusalem clashes

Six police officers lightly hurt as demonstrators protest eviction of Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah.

Six Israel Police officers were lightly wounded and 21 left-wing activists were arrested Friday during a demonstration that turned violent in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of Jerusalem.

The demonstrators were protesting the eviction of Palestinian families from their homes.

The protesters on Friday marched from the city center to Sheikh Jarrah, where police said they tried to enter a home that is partly occupied by Jews before being stopped.

Police were instructed to disperse the demonstration, but the protesters refused to leave. Police then used force and tear gas to disperse the crowd.

The entry of the Jews into the home follows a court order ruling in early December that the Arab al-Kurd family, which lives in a portion of the house, had no right to occupy an addition that they had built onto the house. The court rejected the al-Kurd family's petition seeking to prevent the Jews from moving into the building.

In recent months, three Palestinian families have been evicted from Sheikh Jarrah homes. Activists accuse settlers of trying to take over 28 homes in the neighborhood, which would allow them to create a Jewish community at the heart of the mostly Arab vicinity.

sovereignty or statehood. Even a homeless bum 'own's his country. Are you saying millions of people who rent homes do not have a right to be where they are? "We are the only ones with a legal claim to all the land west of the Jordan. That is international law." Which International law would that be? "Jerusalem is ours, physically, morally and legally." Uh huh. What would you know about morals or legality.

I was there, the police were hysterical, violent and used disproportionate amount of force. It took over half an hour before a police man took the megaphone and gave any kind of instructions or warnings, and until he did, the police men hit, arrested and pushed violently. And about the issue of the houses: If the state of Israel and the high court wants to go by the ligal path, fine, lets open the claims and documents of possession of all the Arab houses in Talbiya, Malcha, Old Katamon and Bakaa, all part of West Jerusalem now.

There is an entire Zio industry of web sites, academics, organisations and bloggers desperately seeking to prove/claim that Palestine and Golan are really somehow Israeli land. They have stories about San Remo and the Mandate, Balfour and the Jordanians, Sykes-Picot and Golan, problem is these don't add up to a row of legal beans in international law. Gee wishes us to ignore that inconvenient Palestine was formed in 1923 with its own borders, capital (Jerusalem) and flag and its people were called Palestinians. All the former Ottoman governorates were recognised as de jure territories and Palestine is no different. It is a recognised territorial entity quite separate and independent from Israel. Israel was formed out of a part of Palestine, as defined on the UN's 1947 map, and that is as far as its sovereignty extends. It has no sovereignty or valid legal claim to ANY of Palestine or the Golan. Fact. That's why NO international court or UN member recognises Israel's claims, NOT ONE.

.. the activists do not go around burning and destroying property of others... settler terrorists, in other words, who are called 'protesters'. The activists try to prevent more bullying by people, e.g. some settlers, who are blind and deaf to criminal acts of their own ilk.

The courts have made it abundantly clear that the arabs evicted from Jewish homes were nothing more than squatters. There are many other properties in eastern Jerusalem that were stolen from Jews when Jordan took over for 19 years. Now justice is being served.

Since over 90% of the Arabs did not own any land, they have no claims. We are the only ones with a legal claim to all the land west of the Jordan. That is international law. As for the claims of who attacked a mosque, sounds like Pallywood in action again. Jerusalem is ours, physically, morally and legally.

Why are left wingers called activists not fanatics?

Wnenever haaretz has an aricle about someone from the right wing he is labeled a fanatic or exrtemist. Yet a left winger is called an activist. How nice eto be called an activist. Sounds like someone who is active and doing something good. It odesn't matter that by preventing police from carryingout orders of the court they are violating the rule of law. This same rule of law is so important vis a vis the freeze.

Steve- you forget the wonderful Israeli Absentee Property Law. If they were absent since 1948 - for whatever reason - they forfeited ownership. Isn't that how it worked (and works) for Arabs who were absent ( or absented !? ) since 1948 - or any time later ?? David

The Al Kurd family and hundreds like them, lived in and owned property in West Jerusalem. Their homes were taken over by Jews and the UN gave them the houses in Sheikh Jarrah when they came to East Jerusalem - then Jordan - as refugees. Let's open up the whole issue and talk about the thousands of homes belonging to Palestinians inside Israel which were taken over by Jews. Fortunately most of the Palestinians have retained the deeds of ownership to many of the properties. Hundreds of villages were destroyed completely of course, and that is another story altogether.

my dear friends, this houses were built by the UN to the palestininan refugees, and under the ottoman empire, much before 1948 , this houses were owned by arabs, so they were not stolen from any jews.(in the court the proofs were shown) jews have the right to live anywhere they want , yes , you are right , but they must own the land , right? as well under international law, which israel seems not to understand, is illegal for any occupying citizen to live on occupied territory.which in this case is israeli living on occupied palestine.doesnt matter if israeli muslim or jew.peace to all and let them live free!!

As ownership issues goes Israelis will lose this argument , the Palestinians owned most of Israel and are denied claim on it . The idiotic bunch who keep justifying Jews have the right to live ( I mean "muscle their way") anywhere are going to lead this region to hell . In 10 years a mad man ( Jew or Arab) will blow all of us into nuclear dust . Get off your arrogant high horse and share the land with respect , then all can live where they want .

The torching of a Mosque, like the devastation of groves and attacks upon Palestinians in the West Bank are investigated by the three blind mice. Left-wing protesters are clubbed and arrested. What is the difference? The law applies to lefties while those on the right are exempt from the law. Not an unusual situation in this world.
