Mohammed al-Dura - AP - 19022012
Israel's focus on al-Dura is harmful propaganda

The report released on the death of Mohammed al-Dura doesn’t lift the fog off the case, if there ever was any. Instead, it raises a more painful issue: the many young people killed by IDF soldiers during the second intifada.

No alternative to integration

Without the integration of the Haredim and the Arabs into the economy, the state will have difficulty sustaining itself over time. The government must make dealing with these two communities one of its top priorities.

Hurrah for the 'hilltop youth'

The government’s intention to make the crime of settlement outposts kosher is in direct and flagrant contradiction to its masquerade that it wants to advance the peace process.

Lapid’s credibility deficit

When it comes to the ultra-Orthodox school system, the finance minister didn’t do his homework - not during the election campaign nor while the Finance Ministry was crafting the state budget.

Prison
Prolonging the injustice of unwarranted detention

Police station commanders must make broad and efficient use of their authority to release suspects from detention when it is appropriate, instead of infringing on these individuals' rights and putting undue strain on the court system.

Putting a price on Israel's security

The economy is no less important than weaponry. A prudent defense budget will achieve higher security at lower cost.

Illegal exclusion

The attorney general's recommendation to make the exclusion of women in public places a criminal offense is a necessary step by a democratic state that wants its citizens to enjoy equal rights and opportunities.

The government vs. the Knesset

Avigdor Lieberman calls his proposal to raise the threshold for a party to enter the Knesset “strengthening governability,” but it sounds more like the tyranny of the majority and weakening the checks and balances inherent in the Israeli system of government.

An Israel against peace is a danger to its citizens

The past few days suggest most members of Israel's new government regard every new initiative for advancing the peace process as a threat that must be repulsed. Such a government is a threat to its citizens.

Another stain on the law books

Bringing a suspect to court doesn’t increase the danger he constitutes. But not bringing him greatly increases another danger, which is no less grave: It widens the cracks in Israel’s democracy.

Counterfeit culture

The storm over currency poses a much bigger challenge to Israel’s educational and cultural leaders than merely a commitment to fix the injustice in a decade. It obligates them to reevaluate school curricula and fix the country’s knowledge infrastructure.

Needed: Bias in favor of state schools

Israel’s governments have contributed to ultra-Orthodox education for too many years. As a result the Haredi education system has thrived and the ultra-Orthodox community’s seclusion and separatism have intensified.

A more transparent government

The cabinet would do well to promote open and accessible government by publishing the minutes of all its meetings, as Knesset committees do, as long as there is no fear of harming state security or foreign relations.

Scrap the IDF rabbinate
