I reached the conclusion recently that Israe's publis space is like...No, not like, IS an all-in dog-fight. Partcipants are primed to savage each other at the bell. But I stand corrected. Dog-fight is the wrong animal comparison. Give and take is despised hereabouts. Zvi Barel's uninformed diatribe--aren't all diatribes-- that Israel's democracy falls short of US America's, rests on blindingly obvious closed mindedness. The American public sphere rests on general acceptance of Rules For Taking Turns. For perhaps understandable reasons-- alas history provided founding circumstances, this essential glue of a democratic outlook was never ever there. And after reading his rather intemperate lament I reached the conclusion that comparing Israel to a dogfight, or even a catfight, is misleading. Members of those species know as Rule #1 when to break off. Israelis? I'm always open to learning...
