After Israel occupied the Palestinian territories in 1967 it proceeded to annex East Jerusalem and subsequently enlarged the municipal border by more than 100 km2. It then began to construct a ring of colonies around this enlarged municipal area in a bid to separate Arab East Jerusalem from its natural Palestinian hinterland. In order to build Gilo as off 1971 (situated obviously across the Green Line in occupied Palestinian territory) Israel had to confiscate/commandeer/steal thousands of dunams from neighbouring Palestinian towns and villages like Beit Jala, Beit Safafa and Sharafat. It is just as illegal as the colony next door on Jabal Abu-Ghneim ('Har Homa') or as the latest 'outpost' built by renegade Jewish settlers. All of the above provide more brazen examples of Israel's UNILATERALISM of 'creating facts on the ground'. It is good to see Washington stop referring to colonies like Gilo as "Jerusalem neighbourhoods", as the Bush administration and CNN used to do.
