Zionism, left, right and even mizrahi (religious), was always about bringing Jews into the modern world and letting the moral values of our people flourish, adapt and be renewed. it was a battle at once against our powerlessness and at the same time against the superstitions of the shtel and the culture of amulets and "holy men" (always men of course). Sarid is correct -- if the battle is not fought and won now we will suffer the agonies of France in the 19th century and Spain in the 20th where the forces of clericalism were a fifth column subverting democracy, tolerance and progress. This is the test of secular zionism - right and left - do not fail!
