Since the start of this very ugly kidnapping, as I am sure you know, Israel has attempted to negotiate for the release of Gilad Shalit through various intermediaries. None of these negotiations have had results. However tragic the situation of the hostage and of his family, after much soul searching, it has become obvious that given the present situation in the Palestinian Authority, the fragmentation of Hamas, the general lawlessness in Gaza, there is no hope to obtain the release of Gilad Shalit. It is not possible to endanger the national security of the state for the sake of one soldier. No country can allow itself to be blackmailed by terrorists without sacrificing its ability to project power and its deterrence. May Hashem be with Gilad, with his family, and with kol am Israel.
