Egypt, once was the center of the Arab world and proudly hosted a Jewish Diaspora for over 1000 years. This was an Islamic society that in relative terms to the times allowed their minorities to live in peace and with dignity. The same mindless racism that forced my father to leave Egypt, along with his WHOLE family and WHOLE extended family post-1948, existed in the minds and souls of the educated elite of Egypt at the time than exists fro Zahi Hawass - The racist. The Exodus of Jews from Egypt hurt Egypt far more than it did the Egyptian Jews. Zahi Hawass's shameful behavior suggests that nothing much has changed. These remaining synagogues in Egypt are a reminder of a more tolerant, less islamo-fascist times. If only the Egyptians of today would realize their true value, they would cherish these structures and hope for a day when Jews might return.
