The official name of Israel in Hebrew is "Medinat Yisroel", and has been since 1948. "Israel" has been used by Jews as a collective noun for "The Jewish People" for 3000 years, it appears as such in our most sacred prayer. Medinat Yisroel translated into English is "State of the Jewish People".Israel is referred to as "Jewish State" several times in its Declaration of Independence. The UN and the USA and every country with diplomatic relations with Israel recognizes this. Therefore, Abbas and the PLO saying they won't recognize Israel the Jewish State (what the name means) is the same as saying they won't recognize Israel or its independence OR ITS GOVERNMENT. Its like the PLO saying "we recognize the existance of an American state in North America, but we will never recognize the United States of America. The Palestinians recognize Israel's "existance" every time they don't climb over the security fence for fear of getting shot in the head! This is not what the "peace process" is all about, and it proves that the PLO never accepted Obama's "2-states for 2 peoples" plan - that Obama LIED to US voters in claiming that they did. This, not apartment construction, is the #1 obstacle to peace, and has been for 63 years. AS you can see, Abbas just announcing that the PLO never intended to compromise or negotiate on anything major (borders, land swaps, refugees, their idiotic "right of return", recognizing Israel, etc.) PROVES they never wanted peace with Israel all along. Independent Palestinian State has legitimacy only in the context of recognizing the Jewish State next door - so it must come off the table for good, and the PLO shipped back to Tunis.
