I don't think it applies in Israel's case. There are subsets of the US pop (Rapture-seeking evangelicals, zionists, Faux News followers) who support Israels current settlement policies but the aid is coming despite the US government's disapproval. Your point is good however. Iran would still be a parliamentary democracy as it was in 1952, had PM Mosadej not tried to nationalize THEIR oil and the US/UK replaced him with their puppet, Shah Reza Pahlevi.
