An undivided Jerusalem in an integrated, truly democratic state encompassing Israel, Gaza and the West Bank would, of course, be ideal. But when “undivided” is a euphemism for a Jewish take-over of Palestinian homes and neighborhoods, I have real issues with it. Israel as democratic “Jewish” state is an oxymoron, just as the United States as a democratic “Christian” state would be an oxymoron. Modern democracies do not marginalize their minorities is such a fashion. Those who want an ethnically and religiously-based Jewish state have to be willing to allow the Palestinians to have a viable, fully autonomous ethnically and religiously- based state of their own. That means dividing Jerusalem.
