From Margaliot you sent despatches that made poignant and atmospheric reading but, forgive me if I am wrong, I don't remember hearing your loud cries mid-July about the unbelievably amnesiac, (and obscene) supposition that Hizballah would be vanquished and Regev and Goldwasser returned if our airforce ploughed up southern Lebanon and its inhabitants for a couple of days. I understand you. You have left politics. But it needed to be said loudly and clearly by someone with stature. Some saw immediately that this was not about kidnapped soldiers. Finding themselves orphaned of all the mainstream parties and even their cultural icons, ordinary people had no recourse but to give vent to their agony in the talkback pages of newspapers (asking themselves as they did so what was more traitorous, to speak or not to speak?) all the while hoping against hope that maybe they would turn out to be wrong. The question is, where do they go from here?
