It shocks me to see that an article which could inspire Jews to learn more about the holiday and teach about its meaning and spirituality of the day, instead looks to delegitimize the holiest day of the year. The talmud records the incident but does not say azalzel is a demon, just that the goat is taken to the cliffs and is designated for azalzel, most likely azalzel is borrowed and in this instance just means emptiness or wilderness. Surely we must admit that the theories of bible criticism are nothing more than theories, and the day of Yom Kippur may be as old as Judaism. And the mishna in taanit is talking about the night after yom kippur has ended that is when the young singles would go to the fields, not during yom kippur itslef. To summarize, why have an article about a religious day written by someone non religious who from the looks of this article does not ascribe much meaning to the customs and rituals of yom kippur?
