My family is from Romania, but my wife's family comes from Lita (Lituania.) A relative of hers gave us a copy of a book KADDISH FOR KOVNO, which was written by William M. Mishell, who came from Kovno. According to the book, it was on Sunday, June 22, 1941, when the Lithuanians (so-called friends and classmates of the Jewish residents) starting rounding up Jews and taking them to the ninth fort. Over ten thousand Jews were shot within a few days of the initial roundup. There was resistance, and Yitzhak Arad could be blamed for it, even though he was just fifteen years old at the time. It is hard for me to believe that one's neighbors and "friends" could turn on their Jewish neighbors with such hate and venom.
