Though he never killed and butchered civilians like Hamas and the "martyr" brigades. But Begin changed and became a leader (with Sadat, a great Arab leader and man of peace) who pushed for peace between Israel and Egypt, and made the Mideast a more peaceful place for Arabs and Jews alike. Some of us, foolishly, believed that Arafat could also change from terrorist to national leader and man of peace. That's why we supported Olso. But Arafat proved us wrong. Great men have the courage to confront their people and demand sacrifices and compromise...Begin convinced Israelis to give up a lot of territory (all of Sinai), pursue peace with Egypt, a longtime enemy, etc. unfortunately for Israel--but even more unfortunately for the Palestinians--Arafat never had the courage to confront his people and demand they make the hard choices and compromises that peace--and a Palestinian state--require. Maybe, somewhere in Fatah, there is a Pal capable of changing the way Begin did.
