Since the 2nd world war you are not SUPPOSED to fight a war to WIN, you are meant to fight only in self-defence. What A Bummer, hey? Mind you, there are people who actually think that is a GOOD thing; that taking up arms is supposed to be an act of last resort against an aggressor, rather than as a means of avoiding all that namby-pamby, time-wasting diplomacy stuff. It's how the world is SUPPOSED to behave now, Matt, and just because bully-boy nations think they can pick up a Big Stick just like in the days of old does not mean it is A Good Idea. The Arabs learnt that in 1948. Israel got in two good licks in 1956 and 1967, got cocky as a result, and ever since has proved to be a real, real slow learner. Have another read of this article, Matt, because its written by one Israeli who does seem to have understood the lesson.

Why we don't know how to pick our leaders

Our craving for ideology means that we are partial to ideological leaders. But we need leaders who will make smart decisions that are aligned with the public interest.
