I am a New Zealand-born Jew, my love for my country and my love for the Jewish people run to my deepest being. As a New Zealander, I cannot love my country without acknowledging the injustices done to the Maori people. As a Jew, I cannot hold Israel to a lower standard that my country of birth. There is no question that Gideon Levy is correct in everything said in this article: without Israel's left, there could be no support for Israel from the liberal democracies of the world. As Jews, we are commanded to pursue justice. The bravery and the wisdom shown by comentators like Gideon Levy is a deep credit to us all; by demonstrating their loyalty to Jewish ideals, these people show the world that there is still hope for a democratic, peaceful, and just Israel.
