"Do you then propose killing and expelling the entire population in the south from whom Hezbollah springs? Is this where this is going?" - Yaakov Sullivan Is not one of the goals of this incursion the creation of a "security zone" with its northern boundary at the Litani River? What does that say to you, Yaakov? What was the northern boundary of Israel envisioned by the founding Zionist leaders? Was it not the Litani River with a compliant Christian-controlled Lebanon on the north flank? Do you think the passing years have turned this objective into a dead letter issue? Think again. Israel needs the Litani to sustain growth. There is just so much water it can take from the Jordan and other West Bank sources, at the expense of the Palestinians, without risking catastrophic consequences for the Palestinians. The Litani border is not a dream. It is still perceived as an essential strategic goal. And, absent the diplomatic route, aggression is the only way to secure it.
