    Christianity of the catholic kind is rife with holdovers from the Greco Roman world in whcih it grew up.Whether or not time various smoke and mirrors were thrown up around what the original understanding of the eucharist was is another story.various Collegia in the ancient greco roman world held sacred meals of all sorts, the early chusrch and indeed Judaism was seen by greco roamns as a form of collegia where self help and sacred meals were enjoyed by its memebers.The eucharist was understood as a sacred meal honoring and remebering the god by partaking of his flesh.The Church held that it was the actual literal blood and flesh of the god. Jesus trasnsformed the "sacrements" of the passover meal the Matzo and wine into his flesh and blood, the eucharist is the jesusfied version of the Passover meal, it is a scared meal.
