In 2005, Israel thought of the removal of the settlers as an act with a final conclusion, that if they evacuated Gaza that they would not be occupying Gaza. But, the Gazans did not think of themselves as Gazans, but as Palestinians, and that as happy as they were that Israelis were no longer in their face, the only significance of the removal from Gaza was that Israel was occupying 140 sq miles less of Palestine. At this point, its only a job started but nowhere near finished, not even a project completed. Israel appears currently to have renounced sincere peace efforts, and certainly any serious communication that it is serious about peace. What would communicate seriousness would be announcement of a five-year moratorium on settlement construction, NONE. And, of course, it is necessary for Hamas to join the PA permanently and also sincerely, and acknowledge Israel's existence as Israel. The "Jewish state" theme is intentionally disruptive, and utterly unnecessary.
