There is nothing post-modern about it. Your allegation is not correct. For two millenia, the longing for Zion was a religious one, a metahistorical one which was not seen as occuring until the days of the Messiah. Zionism which stemmed from Herzl's belief that the Jew was not assimilatable in Europe was boorn in a romantic milieu in which ethnos was identified with nationality.
