Rabbi Knopf, who I know from my college days, is a brilliant Conservative Rabbi. As an Orthodox Jew myself, I know many YU-graduates who are spoiled and full of themselves and insist that they know the reasons for all customs that we observe today. Since there is no more doubt as to the calendar, they argue, Yom Tov Sheni is no longer needed. Rabbi Knopf is correct in pointing out that we may not know all of the reasons the ancient rabbis had for their decrees, and as such are in no position to abrogate them. We must instead follow their rules with humility. Thank you for publishing this wonderful article.
