I was in Israel last year, for the first time in 15 years. I hadn't been to the Kotel since 1980, and when I got there I was shocked by how much smaller the women's side had become. The men's side was almost empty-while our side, well-I'd have had to push through crowds to get anywhere near the wall. I felt hurt and angry-and decided it was not worth the humiliation I'd have experienced to subject myself to this discrimination. Separate and unequal- that is the policy of the Haredim controlling our sacred spaces.
