There has been an international effort for peace in the Middle East for over a century in modern times, along with the advancement of the Zionist Movement which aimed at giving refuge to World Jewry. Not only were there to be established modern states in the Holy Land (The Balfour Declaration of 1917), Israel and Palestine, but throughout the Middle East there were newly established nations which always controlled their internal strife based on religious affliliations. Extremists, from wherever they come from, have a serious problem living with compromise and tolerating regional variations. So it's really up to the mainstream establishments to carry the encompassing umbrellas, in Israel, a moderate coalition government, and in Palestine, the representatives of the PLO, who will follow international norms of conduct. That's the bottom line and the establishment of two-states side by side must have governments which are always cognizant of these facts.
