I'm afraid Yoel Marcus has hit the nail on the head and, in fact, the IDF/IAF huge overreaction that much of the world sees as collective punishment smacks of attempts to smudge the military's own dishonor. But more, all this over-reaction temporarily shoves from focal scrutiny the flaws of Israeli policy, including "convergence" and a long history of diplomatic failures. Some of these because we wanted to choose our own "partner for peace" when real negotiations require dealing with the opponent you have.
