The LDJ is an embrassement to French Jewry. Their main claim to fame was to stab in the stomach and seriously wound a senior French police officer who once stepped in when they attacked a Peace Now contingent during a major rally at which all branches of the community were present; What do you think the papers reported about the next day? The success of the rally or the stabbing? They've attacked city garbagemen collecting bins in a "Jewish" street because they were black, passing pizza deliverymen because they were Arabs etc. When French Jewish war veterans recently rekindled the flame at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier under the Arc de Triomphe, the LDJ militantswaved nIsraeli flags and chanted "Am Yisrael Hai." Fine, but not then or there. Our community has a respectable self-defence group (the Service de Protection de la Communauté Juive) which works hand in hand with authorities to provide security for synagogues during the high holidays and I've never seen an LDJ guy I could identify among them.
