I am an American Jew, living in Israel, and see the issue this way. Israelis serve in the army, many have seen active combat, while the vast majority of American Jews have never been in a real fistfight. Israelis therefore feel, with some justification, that their life experience is deeper and more meaningful than that of the cosseted American Jews, who nonetheless condescend to them because they are richer and have evolved such niceties as leaving the tip on the credit card invoice. Call it the wimp factor. Then there are the back seat drivers, shouting from the left or the right that Israel is giving up too much or not enough, from the safety of their suburban homes. As the death character said in the Monty Python sketch "you treacly American, you make me wanna puke!"
