Becasue Israel no longer has Zionist leadership. The author says that Peretz can claim total ignorance on military affairs and should have had second thoughts about accepting the job. The real culpit is Olmert for even considering Peretz as a Defense Minister. That choice was one of political expediency and not one which put the concerns of the nation of Israel first, That choice was paid in lives lost in Lebanon. Israel's neighbors have much the same opinion of Israel as they did in 1948. Not one of them would feel that the elimination of Israel would be a bad thing. Their populations are even worse and would celebrate a second Holocaust. Zionist leadership would not contemplate giving away chunks of Israel to try and ameliorate Arab hatred. It would not persue a policy of land for paper promises which can be broken at any time. Let peace be based on peace and not on tribute in the form of giving away parts of Israel. No one in Israel says this and that is the problem.
